Heligan was the seat of the Tremayne family for more than 400 years, and is one of the most romantic and mysterious gardens in England. At the end of the 19th century the gardens were at their most abundant, with over a thousand flourishing acres, no-one could predict what was to come next. A motto written in the limestone walls next to the ‘thunderbox’ reads ‘Don’t come here to sleep or slumber’, written by the men who worked there in August 1914. Sadly, most of the gardeners were to perish in the First World War and the bramble and ivy were left to grow wild and choke the garden.
However, in 1990, after years of abandonment, events unfolded after a devastating hurricane. A tiny room was discovered, buried under fallen stone in the corner of one of the walled gardens. This went on to be the beginning of an incredible obsession to bring the spectacular gardens back to life, and to celebrate the lives of the ordinary gardeners who worked here, rather than the grand lords and ladies who lived here.
A large working team has now been established and the award wining garden restoration is internationally acclaimed, with the gardens expanding ever more into the 200 acre wider estate.
