South West Cornwall is one of the richest regions for attractions and things to do in Cornwall. The area has some of the best views and landscapes as well as gardens, historical sites and places to visit.
Truro, most popular for it’s Cathedral, sits in central Cornwall with a great variety of shops and facilities. The Hall for Cornwall offers theatre goers a local venue for some of the best shows touring the country all year round. The Piazza on Lemon Quay hosts regular farmers markets as well as arts and craft shows and touring European markets.
The River Fal, has many villages offering pubs, shops, and water-sports centres spread over miles worth of creek side locations. Each of the villages host a day in Falmouth Week in August, Helford, Mylor, Restronguet, St Mawes, Flushing and Falmouth host two days.
Falmouth, famous for its maritime culture sits at the mouth of the River Fal, looking across to St Mawes, which can be reached by foot ferry. The National Maritime Museum and the recent addition of Discovery Quay have helped boost the area. Falmouth Regatta Week held on the second week of August each year is still its most popular event, barring The Tall Ships Race, which visits the port approximately every 10 years.
Helford home to Frenchmen Creeek made famous by Daphne du Muarier holds many treasures. Trebah and Glendurgan Gardens flourish in the sub-tropical ravine along the shores of the River Helford. At the top of the River the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek add to the diversity of the region.
The Lizard, home to the Lizard Lighthouse Heritage Centre run by Trinity House is set on the most southerly point of Cornwall and indeed Great Britain. Marconi made his first transatlantic radio communication from Poldhu Wireless Station in 1901. Goonhilly Earth Satellite Station, received the first live transatlantic television broadcast from the USA in 1962.
