Property Location
Just over the hill from Eden Valley lies the ancient stannary town of Lostwithiel, Cornwall's hidden treasure, nestling in the Fowey River valley and overlooked by the 12th century Restormel Castle. This ancient town with its quaint old buildings is full of the hustle and bustle of everyday life, centering around St Bartholomew church which dates back to before 1170. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside with the Fowey Rover meandering through the centre of the town. St Austell was once the major producer of the world's China Clay; now with cheaper foreign imports, the industry is in decline but The Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum set in two former working pits depicts the countryside in years gone by. Wet weather activities could include the visitor centre at St Austell Brewery, sampling beers and ales made on the premises. The Eden Project hosts many bands throughout the season as well as featuring an Ice Rink out of season.
Bodmin was the former county town of Cornwall for many years and the only Cornish town to be recorded in the Domesday Book, which was lodged in the town's prison during the First World War. The county prison is now a museum and open to the public. It was the first prison in the country to have separate cells. The oldest part of the town is made up of mainly granite buildings clustered around the Bodmin Beacon. The Beacon is a 144 feet tall obelisk in memory of Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert. The area around the Beacon which has woodland and traditional hay meadow was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1994. At Tregullon you are just 10 miles away from The Eden Project and 2 miles away from the National Trust's amazing Lanhydrock House.
Nearby Bodmin Moor, bisected by the newly expanded A30, is home to one of Cornwall's Areas of Oustanding Natural Beauty, reaching a height of 1,377 feet above sea level at Brown Willy, Cornwall's highest point. The heather covered granite moorland provides East Cornwall with the most stunning country views and rugged walks. Near Blisland you will find two of Cornwall's stone circles, the Trippet Stones and Stripple Stone Henge and just round the corner, one end of the famous Camel Trail. The 18 mile Camel Trail follows the route of the old railway along traffic free paths, providing a fairly flat cycle through Bodmin and Wadebridge out to Padstow, eminently suitable for families.

Lovely and well equipped apartment in Lostwithiel
Reviewed on 30/06/2022The Old Carriage Works is a clean, well equipped apartment with plenty of room and character. I was initially put off by the apparent limited headroom in the bedroom photos, but there was actually plenty of room. The parking space and proximity to the station was a major draw, and we managed to take a day trip to St Ives before the industrial action began! Wi-Fi and TV worked well, and the kitchen was really well thought out, with lots of extra crockery, dishwasher, full size fridge and freezer etc. There was even a washer dryer, which we didnA?t use but it was nice to have the option if needed. There are plenty of cafes and pubs nearby as well as a well stocked and friendly Co-op. Just two of us stayed, so I was especially pleased to have my own private bathroom while my husband was banished to the en-suite Double bed was comfortable enough, but canA?t comment on the twin beds as we only used the one room. Lostwithiel is a lovely village, with the river Fowey running by the apartment and the medieval bridge, and you are well situated for day trips in the area-with the reassurance of an allocated parking space on your return.

Clean, comfortable, good location
Reviewed on 29/05/2022Having stayed in Lostwithiel 3 times previously we were aware of The Old Carriageworks building and were keen to stay there. The apartment is ideally located for the town, river and train station. The apartment is spacious and comfortable and has a great rain shower in the ensuite. We asked for the twin room to be made up as a double so that we had the choice between two bedrooms but found that one side of the bed was very close to the low vaulted ceiling and I was concerned about banging my head! So we just used the main double room. As the bedrooms are in the roof space it can get quite warm up there. During our stay we had a problem with the toaster tripping the electrics so we reported it to the management team and a new toaster was brought over to us within 48 hours. The railway line runs right alongside the apartment but you can barely hear the trains. In fact we were mostly kept awake by the church bells chiming throughout the night! I would recommend staying here. If I had to nit-pick there were one or two items not available in the apartment and a couple of minor faults that need rectifying but not anything that spoiled our stay.

The Old Carriage Works
Reviewed on 26/08/2021I stayed here with my 3 year old son and friend in August. I was very happy with the accommodation, a great example of a modern conversion, very clean and modern inside. The location was good too with a nice village stream that the children can play in safely with benches for the adults to watch over just a 2 minute walk from the apartment. Due to the age of my son we didn't really get out at night but both the local Indian and Chinese takeaway were probably the best I've had. I'd definitely go back.

Great apartment in great location
Reviewed on 10/06/2021The apartment is so spacious, spotless, light and airy. Dedicated parking space. Everything you would need to make the most of your stay in lovely Lostwithiel. Such a fab location to avoid the crowds of the seaside, but very easy to get out on your daily trips. Great amenities in the town, shops, pubs, restaurants and takeaways. Would go back without hesitation.

Clean, quiet, roomy, very comfortable.
Reviewed on 05/06/2021A clean, quiet, roomy, very comfortable apartment in a good centre for visiting popular locations such as the Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and Mevagissey, Charlestown and nearby towns. Not a lot to see in Lostwithiel itself but very pleasant to amble around and nose about the 'antiques' shops. Local pub provided a good lunchtime snack. Railway nearby was hardly audible and was no problem. Very well stocked kitchen and rooms; some gadgets were of unknown use to us A? we are not young enough to know what they are. Staff at Cornwall's Cottages are always very friendly and most helpful.

Great place to explore from
Reviewed on 20/08/2020This is a very well maintained property in a great central-Cornwall location, ideal for exploring. Lostwithiel is a lovely little place and we enjoyed looking around the shops, meals at the Globe a d paddling in the river from the small beach under the bridge (which is only a couple of minutes walk from the property). There's a train line close by but our sleep wasn't disturbed by it. One point to note : I'm only 5'7" tall but I found my feet touched the 'footboard' at the bottom of the bed so the master bedroom might not be suitable for you if you're much taller than that. The staircase is quite narrow with two turns and small treads so this might not be suitable for those with limited mobility. There are also two flights of stairs up to the entrance.

Carriage Works apartment
Reviewed on 30/07/2020Good apartment with a modern feel and well equipped. Located alongside the river and train station if Lostwithel. Good location for exploring, we managed Plymouth to the east and Lands end to the west. Only downside was the 2 flights of stair to negotiate with cases to get to the apartment.

Clean, warm and comfortable
Reviewed on 08/11/2019Very clean and well equipped property. If you donA?t want to use your car there is plenty of walking from the door or you can get the train from right outside the property. Lovely bakery and deli in Lostwithiel. Only slight problem was the sloping roof in the bedrooms particularly if you are tall.

Excellent Accommodation
Reviewed on 25/07/2019Great position, literally only 2 minutes walk from the town, although a little disappointed by Lostwithiel itself. Makes for a great base to explore the surrounding area. . It's lovely and clean and everything you could need is provided by the owners.

Very clean and well located
Reviewed on 02/05/2019Clean and well equipped accommodation. Was useful having additional cups, plates etc. and not just the 6 that some properties provide. However, could do with more sharp knives and a couple of larger pans for cooking for a family of 4. Quiet location within easy reach of many attractions. Was useful having 2 bathrooms. Was good value for money as our school holidays were different, but otherwise have been a tad expensive. Would stay again.

Reviewed on 28/04/2019Warm, quiet and comfortable. Everything we needed in the apartment. Nice gift, food and haberdashery shops in Lostwithiel, many serving coffee too. Plenty to do on the doorstep, including a playground and games field. A relaxing family week.

Tip Top
Reviewed on 05/03/2019We were very impressed with this sympathetic modern conversion of a historic building. Pretty much everything inside from radio to to kitchen utensils were not only new but good quality. The easy walk into Lostwithiel meant the car was not needed at night.

Autumn break
Reviewed on 08/11/2018A lovely property in a great location. Very well equipped for self catering although Lostwithiel has good choice of restaurants and cafes!! Being next to station is good for car free days out and there are loads of places to visit nearby - or just sit and watch the river from outside the property. Good to find a place with comfy settees and beds and furnished in keeping with the history of the building. The 29 stairs up to the apartment may be a problem for pushchairs, toddlers, those with mobility problems etc

Family visit
Reviewed on 12/08/2018We booked the cottage so we could link up with family who were also staying in Lostwithiel. The cottage is well located for touring the local area and is very well appointed with pretty new fixtures and fittings. If you need a comfortable, quiet base for this type of holiday it would be ideal. It represents reasonably good value for money for 3-4 people staying. We would consider using the property again for exploring Cornwall. The cottage doesnA?t have its own private outside space so we probably wouldnA?t use it if we just wanted somewhere to laze about and not go to other places. The property is on the first flooor with stair access, not a problem for us at all but someone with a disability or with very young children may struggle. The private parking place is useful.

The sort of home from home you always want
Reviewed on 30/12/2017Superb!. We have stayed before which is why we returned again and hope to do so in the future too. Facilities included comfort, warmth and a quiet atmosphere in a well appointed apartment, equipped with everything you could possible need. We have specific requirements associated with any Lostwithiel break, where we often stay, and this ticks all the boxes. Plus this time, some tasteful festive decoration and cheer although not expected was also laid on ( thank you ). The company handling of the booking and any other arrangements and inquiries has been a reliable, repeatable and welcoming service too. The whole experience a breath of fresh air compared with some other renting arrangements we have encountered over the years. Well done to the owners and also to 'Cornwalls Cottages'.

Great Holiday
Reviewed on 12/10/2017We enjoyed our stay at the Old Carriage Works. It was comfortable and very well equipped for our needs. A lot of thought has gone in to equipping the kitchen and it was a lovely touch to have a picnic bag for guests to use. We found Lostwithiel a great base and places we visited included Lanhydrock (great for a rainy day), beautiful Crantock beach, Looe and Polperro. The coastal walks were amazing. We made good use of the Lostwithiel Co-op and enjoyed a meal out at Asquiths, which was delicious. In all a great holiday. Thank you.

Wow!
Reviewed on 16/08/2017Wow! First impressions are so important and The Carriageworks does not fail to impress. After a little bit of a climb up some industrial style stairs you get to the apartment where you grab the key from a coded box, easy. Then you enter this beautiful apartment with an impressive kitchen and living room that overlooked the railway. Upstairs was also as impressive, both bedrooms beautifully furnished with views of the river or countryside from the Velux windows, amazing. We had a wonderful stay and certainly appreciated the complimentary tea, coffee and milk for the first night. The Carriageworks are in an ideal spot to explore Cornwall and is in the lovely village of Lostwithial with everything you need - a Coop, cafe, fish n chip shop, Chinese take-away and restaurants and pubs. I even saw a steam train go by one evening, happy days. We would recommend staying here to anyone, very relaxing.
