Property Location

Pentewan (just north of Mevagissey) has an industrial past that is still evident in the village today. It was once a busy harbour built by a local mine owner for shipping china clay. Inland is the Pentewan Valley Trail which is 4km of woodland and riverside walking following an old gauge railway to the village of London Apprentice. The village also has a small, friendly pub with tables on the old harbourside. There is a wonderful sandy, beach which is ideal for families.

The town of Mevagissey is just a 5 minute drive in a southerly direction. Mevagissey is a wonderful little Cornish fishing village in South East Cornwall. Ideally located within easy reach of both The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project. The tiny seaside village is packed with old Cornish cottages complete with narrow alleyways leading to converted fish cellars offering gift shops, galleries, pubs and cafes. Once a major Pilchard port, now the harbour boasts a smaller fleet, many of which provide sea tours, or boat trips to Fowey situated further up the South coast. The Harbour provides an ideal back drop for a fish and chip supper, followed by a stroll through the town at dusk.

With an eight minute drive to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and 30 minutes to the Eden Project, Mevagissey provides a excellent location for the keen gardener. Gorran Haven nearby offers an alternative day out as well as Pentewan with its fresh water dock basin. You can continue south along the coast down to Caerhays Castle and Porthluney Cove. Cliff walks in all directions along the coast offer spectacular views out across the St Austell Bay.

A Wonderful Week

We stayed at The Custom House in August this year and it was one of the best holidays we have had in Cornwall. The location was ideal as we have a 5 year old son and only having a short walk to the beach made our lives easier throughout the week! The communication we had by Cornwall Cottages was excellent and questions were answered when I got in touch with the house keeper before our journey down. We found that the cottage was just as lovely as the photographs suggest. The village of Pentewan is ideal for any family holiday, as we found the people we met to be very friendly and helpful. We would recommend eating in The Ship Inn and buying pasties from the shop.. delicious!

Family holiday in Pentewan - birthday celebrations and fantastic weather!

We have stayed around the Pentewan area many times but this was the first time we have stayed in the village. My brother has lived in Pentewan for many years and, when we visit, we usually stay nearby and drive into the village. Staying at The Customs House made our holiday much more relaxing - less driving around and such a comfy, home-from-home. We had a lovely holiday and the weather was perfect! Pentewan beach is wonderful and there are plenty of good places to eat, a few shops, a petrol station and even a post office within walking distance. We also visited Screech Owl Sanctuary (well worth a visit), Charlestown, St Austell (for the shops!) and Lobbs Farm Shop (at Heligan). Would definitely recommend The Customs House - a lovely, relaxing break. Stay in the village if you don't want to wander any further - but there are lots of fantastic places in Cornwall which are a short distance away.

Family holiday

Comfortable cottage in a great location. Slept well every night so the bed must've been fine. No major issues but bunk beds are a bit wobbly and there was no grill for the grill pan which was a bit odd.

Last minute 5 night break!

We had a lovely stay in Pentewan. The location is perfect with parking at the rear. We didnA?t use the summer house but sat in the front garden/terrace in the evening and the weather was stunning. This is the only area we felt could be improved. The outdoor furniture is tired and itA?s a little untidy but this didnA?t spoil our stay. The property is lovely and has everything that you need. There is a lovely cafe next door and the Ship Inn was very friendly. IA?d recommend a stay here. ItA?s a perfect location for visiting the Eden Project, lost gardens of Heligan and the beach is a short walk from the cottage.

From the Owner:
Thank you for your lovely review! We are new owners of The Customs House, having bought the cottage at the beginning of 2018 and have tried to ensure it is of a good and comfortable high standard. On our list of things to do was replacing the outside furniture to the front of the property, but unfortunately we ran out of time when we got our first booking earlier in the year and have not been able to replace it since due to back to back bookings and living a few hundred miles away! However, it will be the first thing on our list at the end of season and thank you for your feedback on this.

Lovely property close to sea.

Enjoyed a lovely week at The Customs House. Clean and comfortable property with all amenities, including interesting old furniture, with a 'nostalgic' bathroom, and good views. It is close to the sea and the South West coast path so lots of good walking. Not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues as main bedroom is on top floor with bathroom on floor below. Floorboards creak a lot so going downstairs in the night was a bit disturbing, otherwise it was very quiet. Village is small and friendly, provisions available from local petrol station. There is a large caravan site nearby, making use of the big, sandy beach,so may be busier at height of summer, but was quiet in September. Various activities available nearby - cycling, sailing and kayaking. Good food at the friendly Ship Inn.

A week in Pentewan

on arriving to the customs house we found it to be very clean and smelt clean. I noticed there were cleaning products, dishwasher tablets, dishcloth and tea towels provided. There is also an iron and hairdryer there too. We did get used to the stairs after a bit but I will be honest we prefer being in a caravan as it feels more like a holiday to us. This is nothing against the house as we did think it was beautiful. It did lack outside space which we missed. There is a terraced area which is for the customs house by where you can park the car further up but this doesn't feel like part of the house. You can hang your washing on the rotary line there but we never did. I guess the logistics of the houses cannot be helped. We've got a 5 year old and found it difficult with watching him on 3 floors so had to take turns whilst the other was on a different floor. There is a stair gate but found this tricky to fit as well it didn't so we had to use a piece of my sons track to fill in the gap to the wall. There were a few nails sticking up out the wooden flooring which I caught my foot on so I did call the number.provided but no answer. Luckily I managed to find some doubled sided sponge to stick over these temporarily until the housekeeper came in when we left. I left a little note to make her aware of this. My mom and dad are staying this week and they have told me that this has been rectified so fair play to the housekeeper for sorting this out. I did miss having carpet in the living area. I get the practicality of not having it but it is nice for comfort. Go to the LITTLE BAY CAFE the food there is out this world and reasonable. The lady who runs this makes all her own cakes she is so lovely and a credit to the place. The ship inn as always packed out but never fails to produce a bad meal.

Lovely spacious cottage

The cottage is very well located, overlooking the old harbour and just a few minutes walk from the beach. There is a small shop opposite that sells icecreams with a tearoom next door. There is a pub a stone's throw away and a restaurant down the road with a corner shop just beyond. St Austell and Mevagissey are 5-10 minutes away by car (Mevagissey is a one hour walk along the coastal path). The property itself is very spacious inside. The kitchen is well appointed and has a breakfast bar, plus there is a separate dining room. Because there was only the two of us, we hardly used the dining room but for four it would be very useful. We ate some meals at the table and chairs outside the front door (overlooking the square). Upstairs is the large lounge with one bedroom and the bathroom off. The main bedroom is up another flight of stairs. The bed was comfy and there was plenty of storage space. We enjoyed the leather sofas and space in the lounge. The shower and bathroom downstairs was fine but will get very cold in the winter. The parking for the property was 100m down the side road although there is public parking just across the square so loading/unloading was not a problem. Overall it was a lovely property that we enjoyed staying in.

Good location for a quiet break, especially if you are visiting Eden or Helligan

This house is located in a quiet square in a sleepy village, a rare treat in Cornwall. Trips to Mevagassy, Charlestown and Truro are within easy drive. The stairs inside the house are not for the faint hearted and we were disappointed that the bare essentials were not provided, such as salt and pepper, toilet rolls and soap, which seemed a bit mean.

A fantastic week in Pentewan

What a marvellous time we had ! A week mid December where the weather was kind, sunny and mild. This is a stunning location to give you a great base for sightseeing and enjoying the many places to explore. There are plenty of beautiful fishing harbours, beaches, the Eden Project is a must and so much to see. We spent our days out, came back to a couple of beverages in The Ship, which is only 100 steps from the door and dinner in the cottage. The amenities in the cottage are top notch and it has absolutely everything you will need. We needed nothing at all, from kitchen equipment, to comfort with a sore each for relaxing. The village is great, friendly inclusive people, always happy to stop and chat and The Ship is just the nicest little pub, so welcoming, with fantastic food. All in all the best week and we will definitely be back.

October stay at The Customs House

The Customs House is in an excellent location in the centre of the pretty and friendly village of Pentewan. There are wonderful sea and coastal views from the cottage. The property was clean and comfortable and has plenty of space and good amenities. It provided an excellent base from which to explore the area, both by car, foot and kayak.

Great location

We booked this holiday having stopped at another property in pentewan last year. The location is excellent, a short walk to the beach and pub/cafes. However, we found the house very tired and in need of some tlc. The stairs were quite steep and treacherous for children and we had issues with 12 lights not working and no local TV channels. The owner did come and replace/repair 10 of the lights the next day. Very damp/drains smell in the dining room meant we did not use the room for our stay.

Fantasic family friendly stay right next to the beach

Custom House is a brilliant family friendly spacious house, possibly for slightly older children due to the two sets of stairs, that is kept to a very high standard. It has everything you need from great Wifi, to a washing machine and dishwasher. Best of all the beds are extremely comfortable and the location superb. It's a five minute walk to the beach, a wonderful cafe and the local pub and the house is one of the best we have ever stayed in in Cornwall. Everyone in the village especially the neighbours were extremely friendly and the only downside if you could even call it that is that it's a bit tricky to park if you have a big car.

Traditional terraced cottage in a great location

Enjoyed a relaxing early summer fortnight in The Customs House in Pentewan. Its an easy stroll to the beach, and there are plenty of places to eat and drink in the village, our favourites being Judes Brasserie and the Ship Inn. There are numerous villages and coves nearby if you fancy a change of scenery. The cottage is well placed and the parking spaces are a big bonus. There are good views from the lounge, though the double-glazing units need attending to as they are often full of condensation which obscures the view. The cottage is clean and well-equipped with a small sun-trap front garden overlooking the town square. Overall a good base to explore from, or plenty to do in the immediate area if you prefer.

From the Owner:
Thankyou for your review and I'm very pleased that you enjoyed your holiday With regard to the double glazed windows we are aware of the problem and in fact the new Windows have been custom made but require 6 hours for fitting and as we've been fully booked since they've been completed we are unable to have them fitted as we only have six hours between each guest leaving and arriving So sorry for your not being able to see so well out of the Windows but they will be replaced as soon as we get a break in the letting .

A wonderful break!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Customs House. Lovely, well equipped cottage in a very peaceful village. An ideal place for a couple to enjoy a relaxing break, though anyone with dodgy knees may find the stairs a challenge! The Ship inn is 102 steps from the cottage and provides good beer, cider and excellent food; also a very warm welcome to visitors. The farm shop that is next door to the Lost Gardens of Heligan sells wonderful meat, locally sourced vegetables and excellent cheese. The cottage is ideally situated to explore Cornwall and offers good walks locally. We had not been to this part of the world in over 20 years, we now realise what we have been missing!

All in all an very good cottage ideal for a family stay in Cornwall. The cottage is very clean and comfortable and would recommend to every one.The is lots to do walking, cycling and the Ship Inn is fantastic. The only criticism is the is a lovely view from the front and rear windows they all need cleaning and the front have a lot of condensation obscuring the view.

From the Owner:
Thanks for your lovely comments Sorry about the condensation we are very exposed in pentewan in certain weather conditions and that contributed to the obscuring of views The windows are cleaned inside each week and outside fortnightly but we will check when the wind is in the direction of the house that they are clean

October half term

We loved the house and its location. We took our bikes and made use of the local cycle trails. The beach is lovely and we enjoyed walking here as well as following the South West coastal path. The house itself was extremely clean and had all the basic equipment we needed. It was lovely to sit by the lounge windows and watch the world go by! From reading other reviews we had been warned that there may not be any toilet roll and took our own (just as well). The only other thing on the negative side was that the bed was quite hard however as we had lots to do each day sleep was not a problem. The village location was lovely - the neighbours were very friendly. The house is a stone's throw from The Ship and we enjoyed some drinks by the fire during the week. This was a great place to stay.

Lovely house in a great village

We spent a very comfortable week in the Customs House. The house was spotless and both the owners and the neighbours were very friendly and helpful. Perfect size for a family of 4 and well laid out to make the most of the views. The village is peaceful but with everything you need - we didn't use our car at all some days - a 2 minute walk to the beach, a nice pub and a restaurant, walks and bike rides straight from the door. It was easy to walk to Mevagissey for fish and chips by the harbour, or cycle to the Lost Gardens of Heligan - beware the killer hills though! Would definitely return and would recommend this house to others.

Lovely house, location and facilities but too many stairs

We live in a bungalow and the the fact that the shower room is 2 floors away from the main bedroom was an inconvenience to us but would not be to younger people staying

Had a lovely stay

Clean, bright and comfortable cottage. Enjoyed our time there. Had a problem with the front door, but the owner quickly had it rectified. Would stay there again.

Fab location and clean beech.

The instructions for the centre heating were now where to be see. The outside shower had poor water collection when the shower was in use and it used to drain out through the door and onto the tiles outside the shower. The hot water was not constant and it took hours to try and run a bath. We did not know when the waste collection was being collected I.e what day. There would have been better if there was more cutlery not just 4 spoonsknifes/fords etc. all the other kitchen appliances were in a v era good standard. Location was spot on . The layout would have been quite difficult for young children due to the stairs being very steep, varnished and only rope holders to grip.

Many Thanks

We enjoyed our Christmas at the Customs House. The village is lovely and the property was clean and the living area and bedrooms cozy. There was no toilet paper on our arrival and the kitchen was missing a few things for our self catering. You should bring kitchen things you know you'll need to cook comfortably. However, we were warmly invited with a bottle of wine and mince pies. The key was easy to pick up and leave and the parking was easy as well. We didn't want to leave. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.

Lovely cottage would recommend to others

My husband and me had a lovely week early December staying at The Customs House in Pentewan, we know Pentewan well having visited often so knew the property from the outside and it's central location (only a short walk to the village pub and beach) but were very pleased to find the property was really charming on the inside having been decorated to a very high standard. We will definately visit again and would recommend to others, perfect for a couple.

Our wonderful holiday at The Customs House Pentewan.

The Customs House is a superb holiday home , extremely comfortable and beautifully furnished . The owner has paid great attention to detail . We were very impressed . The house is ideally situated for exploring Cornwall and Pentewan village is picture postcard perfect - very quiet in the evenings but entertainment can be sought at the Ship Inn a minute's walk away . The village cafes and shop are friendly and clean - the ice cream delicious . The beach , five or so minutes walk away is beautiful and never crowded and even has a restaurant right on the sand { book for dinner ] . A wonderful week despite the rain .
