Property Location

The Lizard has been designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ as it justifiably deserves. It’s teeming with diverse wildlife and beautiful coves, stunning cliff paths, sandy beaches, fishing villages and spectacular scenery. At Pennare Barton you can guarantee a relaxing, tranquil holiday in spacious luxurious accommodation. It has a remote feel, but it is only a short drive to Helston and much of south and western Cornwall is within easy reach.

The Lizard truly is an experience with so much diversity to discover on your holiday. Traditional fishing villages like Coverack, Cadgwith, Mullion and Porthleven are well worth a visit with beautiful beaches and fantastic local pubs and some of the freshest seafood around. Mullion is the largest village situated on the Lizard Peninsula and boasts a number of quality pubs, cafes and restaurants among its various attractions which include, four beaches and the towering cliffs of Mullion Cove - a fishing harbour. The Helford River is just to the north and inspired Daphne Du Maurier's Frenchmans Creek amongst others. There are some breath-taking coastal walks, which really should include a trip around the Lizard Lighthouse, Brittain's most southerly point, on a clear, windy day there cannot be many more dramatic places in the country, the Lizard point is famous for shipwrecks and the area highlights include early Spring flowers, there are beautiful yellow daffodils everywhere. At the heart of the Lizard, the stands a 13th-century church, famous for its ornate woodwork decorating the end of each pew and depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament. Kynance Cove is a tidal beach for the adventurous, famous for its white sand, turquoise sea and rock stacks. Poldhu Cove, also known as Black Pool Cove, is a lovely west-facing sandy beach is suitable for lots of fun activities from building sandcastles to beach volleyball and rocks to explore at low tide and great for swimming, surfing and windsurfing.

There is a regular ferry in season between Helford River and Helford Passage to the north, with decent pubs on both sides of the river and the gorgeous Trebah Gardens just north of the river in Mawnan Smith. The Helford River and Falmouth harbour are both Meccas for sailing and are buzzing with activity in the summer months, usually culminating in village regattas scattered throughout July and August. To keep children entertained on wetter days Flambards is always a favourite, however earth station Goonhilly and Poldark Mine are both great fun as well. There are sea fishing trips from Porthleven and beach fishing from Loe Bar. There is great diving on the Manacles from Porthkerris and coasteering is available for the really adventurous. The Lizard is home to the Cornish Chough if you like a spot of bird-watching. The coastline has many pretty coves and beaches to discover, but you can usually find great surf at Porthleven and Poldhu.

Praa Sands in the South West of Cornwall is located between Helston and Penzance. The town contains many facilities including a shop, pub, post office and Praa Sands Gold Club. The nearest large supermarket is Morrisons towards Penzance. The extensive beach stretching from Rinsey Head to Hoe Point is extremely popular with the whole family, Prussia Cove, Perranuthnoe & Marazion are the nearest beaches, all within a few minutes drive. When the North Coast is 'blown out' you will find the surfers flock to Praa Sands for its powerful waves coming straight in from the Atlantic Ocean. Just inland from the beach is Pengersick Castle which dates back to the Bronze Age. Nearby Helston is famous for its Floral Dance in May, a day when the whole town stops and dresses up for the day's many dances through the streets. From Penzance, you can take the Scillonian for a day trip to the picturesque Isles of Scilly, well worth a visit if you have never been. 10 minutes down the road lies Marazion famous for St Michaels Mount, home to a medieval castle and a working local community. St Michaels Mount is accessible by causeway at low tides, or by boat. The castle is leased from the National Trust by the St Aubyn family who resides at the property maintaining and working the grounds.

Falmouth is one of Cornwall's most popular places to visit because of its unique mix of attractions, water sports, beaches, history and place to eat. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall and Pendennis Castle are both high on visitors lists of places to visit and the views from Pendennis on a fine day a truly magical. Falmouth is the sailing capital of Cornwall with its spectacular deep water natural harbour offering a haven for both cruisers and racers. Many events are held through the summer culminating in the famous Falmouth Regatta Week and associated shore side events. The beaches at Gyllyngvase & Swanpool are coarse sand and are wonderfully sunny south facing spots. You can ride the ferry to beautiful St Mawes for the day or take a delightful trip around the estuary stopping off at either Trelissick Gardens, Malpas or Truro. There are plenty of places to eat & drink in Falmouth and recently Rick Stein has opened his Fish & Chip Restaurant & Oyster Bar at Discovery Quay adding to the superb mix across the town.

Superb property in stunning gardens
Reviewed on 30/07/2022

A classy welcome with fresh flowers on the kitchen table and classical music playing. A very modern and tastefully furnished cottage. A relaxing spacious airy bedroom and stunning bathroom gave the barn a luxurious feel. The kitchen was well equipped and lounge comfortable in the evenings. Enjoyed the quiet location and walks straight from the property. Gardens were well tended and colourful. We, as older visitors, would have found instructions for the TV remote and the Google pod helpful but we eventually worked them out!

A week of rest
Reviewed on 21/07/2022

We had a lovely week of quite and peacefulness. The only thing we found was the journey in and out of the cottage to get to the main roads to start you journey any where. We are used to narrow roads coming from Somerset but these were a bit tight. We had a couple of narrow escapes in the week we were there although we only travelled at about 20 miles an hour and always when save we pulled over to let other people pass. The cottage was well equipped and had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. I would recommend this cottage but only after telling them about the journey to the cottage.

Pennare Arron Small Barn

Very enjoyable October stay at small barn, itA?s unusual to find such a large property for 2 people. Delightful large bedroom (comfiest bed ever) and bathroom & wonderful bath with lots of hot water. Perfect for a soak after tramping miles on the coast paths and white knuckle drives around the narrow winding lanes. Kitchen well equipped, cosy sitting room and great garden - Our dog loved a good sniff out there every morning and staring at the sheep at the top of the garden. Perfect location for Lizard peninsula (3 sides of the Lizard South West Coast path walk), Mullion, Coverack (look for the hidden Sculpture Park on the Coast path walk), Cadgwith circular SW path walk very scenic. We also walked the Coast Path from the house to Porthallow (coffee at the beach cafe) onto Porthoustock looped back to Gillian via Porthallow. Gillian was beautiful, stopped off at Pennare private beach on way back. We clocked up a fair few miles on foot circa 50 miles - fresh air, sea, beautiful countryside, cosy nights in - whatA?s not to like.

Excellent, apart from getting there!

We loved our stay at this beautiful barn conversion which was extremely comfortable and well equipped. They have thought of everything you might need and there are some lovely extra touches too. We loved having the tiered garden and patio to enjoy the sunshine and the private use of the nearby cove was an added bonus and pure joy to be away from all the crowded areas in Cornwall this year. The spacious bedroom and bathroom were fantastic, we slept well in the very comfortable 5ft bed. The only slight downside for us was the roads to access the property and the directions given by Cornwalls Cottages sent us down some of the narrowest lanes we had ever experienced. Even the property manager said that he would not advise approaching the property via that route and would direct people to come via St. Keverne. Perhaps this should be addressed by Cornwallls Cottages. Would definitely recommend a stay here.

A very comfortable house in a beautiful location
Reviewed on 25/08/2021

We spent a very comfortable week in this beautifully converted barn with a well equipped kitchen, luxurious bedroom and en suite bathroom, lovely sun trap to sit out in amid a wonderfully constructed hillside garden. We were well looked after without being cramped and were offered some delicious fresh vegetables grown on the estate. The barn was a field away from the coast path making it a perfect setting off point for some lovely walks and the headland was particularly rich in wildlife including a dazzling array of butterflies, hares, seals and birds. We wandered along the path to The Five Pilchards in Porthallow for supper and picked the evening's specials. We also took up the Cornwalls Cottages suggestion to order in food from the Cornish Food Box Company which worked brilliantly with our starter box waiting for our arrival. Even though the rest of Cornwall was teeming, this felt peaceful and very tranquil. A perfect spot for a quiet holiday.

Bliss at the Small Barn

Our stay at Penare Barton small barn was a delight. The barn is beautifully furnished to an extremely high standard. There is everything that you need and more besides. Maxine, Hannah and the team have thoughtfully provided guests with all of the latest gadgets and gizmos, at the same time providing luxury via underfloor heating, linen sheets and covers, velvet daybeds, comfortable sofa... and views from every window to gladden the heart. We knew we'd love the barn but it is even better than the photographs. We felt as though we were staying in a boutique hotel. And the garden, surrounding views and landscape...all are breath-taking. So many happy memories made during our stay...morning coffee on the bench at the top of the garden with the sheep (my very favourite spot), walks to the coves and along the coast paths, the peace and beauty all around, pure joy watching Ruby unearth other dogs' forgotten toys from the bushes, deep-filled baths, easy-peasy cooking in an excellent kitchen, sunshine, blackberry-picking, gooseberry gin and tonics as a sundowner...and Gear Farm pasties that we ate on our long drive home!! After months of Lockdown we found Paradise. Thank you for sharing such a special place. We plan to return.
