Property Location

The Lizard has been designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ as it justifiably deserves. It’s teeming with diverse wildlife and beautiful coves, stunning cliff paths, sandy beaches, fishing villages and spectacular scenery. At Pennare Barton you can guarantee a relaxing, tranquil holiday in spacious luxurious accommodation. It has a remote feel, but it is only a short drive to Helston and much of south and western Cornwall is within easy reach.

The Lizard truly is an experience with so much diversity to discover on your holiday. Traditional fishing villages like Coverack, Cadgwith, Mullion and Porthleven are well worth a visit with beautiful beaches and fantastic local pubs and some of the freshest seafood around. Mullion is the largest village situated on the Lizard Peninsula and boasts a number of quality pubs, cafes and restaurants among its various attractions which include, four beaches and the towering cliffs of Mullion Cove - a fishing harbour. The Helford River is just to the north and inspired Daphne Du Maurier's FrenchmansCreek amongst others. There are some breath-taking coastal walks, which really should include a trip around the Lizard Lighthouse, Brittain's most southerly point, on a clear, windy day there cannot be many more dramatic places in the country, the Lizard point is famous for shipwrecks and the area highlights include early Spring flowers, there are beautiful yellow daffodils everywhere. At the heart of the Lizard, the stands a 13th-century church, famous for its ornate woodwork decorating the end of each pew and depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament. Kynance Cove is a tidal beach for the adventurous, famous for its white sand, turquoise sea and rock stacks. Poldhu Cove, also known as Black Pool Cove, is a lovely west-facing sandy beach is suitable for lots of fun activities from building sandcastles to beach volleyball and rocks to explore at low tide and great for swimming, surfing and windsurfing.

There is a regular ferry in season between Helford River and Helford Passage to the north, with decent pubs on both sides of the river and the gorgeous Trebah Gardens just north of the river in Mawnan Smith. The Helford River and Falmouthharbour are both Meccas for sailing and are buzzing with activity in the summer months, usually culminating in village regattas scattered throughout July and August. To keep children entertained on wetter days Flambards is always a favourite, however earth station Goonhilly and Poldark Mine are both great fun as well. There are sea fishing trips from Porthleven and beach fishing from Loe Bar. There is great diving on the Manacles from Porthkerris and coasteering is available for the really adventurous. The Lizard is home to the Cornish Chough if you like a spot of bird-watching. The coastline has many pretty coves and beaches to discover, but you can usually find great surf at Porthleven and Poldhu.

Praa Sands in the South West of Cornwall is located between Helston and Penzance. The town contains many facilities including a shop, pub, post office and Praa Sands Gold Club. The nearest large supermarket is Morrisons towards Penzance. The extensive beach stretching from Rinsey Head to Hoe Point is extremely popular with the whole family, Prussia Cove, Perranuthnoe & Marazion are the nearest beaches, all within a few minutes drive. When the North Coast is 'blown out' you will find the surfers flock to Praa Sands for its powerful waves coming straight in from the Atlantic Ocean. Just inland from the beach is Pengersick Castle which dates back to the Bronze Age. Nearby Helston is famous for its Floral Dance in May, a day when the whole town stops and dresses up for the day's many dances through the streets. From Penzance, you can take the Scillonian for a day trip to the picturesque Isles of Scilly, well worth a visit if you have never been. 10 minutes down the road lies Marazion famous for St Michaels Mount, home to a medieval castle and a working local community. St Michaels Mount is accessible by causeway at low tides, or by boat. The castle is leased from the National Trust by the St Aubyn family who resides at the property maintaining and working the grounds.

Falmouth is one of Cornwall's most popular places to visit because of its unique mix of attractions, water sports, beaches, history and place to eat. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall and Pendennis Castle are both high on visitors lists of places to visit and the views from Pendennis on a fine day a truly magical. Falmouth is the sailing capital of Cornwall with its spectacular deep water natural harbour offering a haven for both cruisers and racers. Many events are held through the summer culminating in the famous Falmouth Regatta Week and associated shore side events. The beaches at Gyllyngvase & Swanpool are coarse sand and are wonderfully sunny south facing spots. You can ride the ferry to beautiful St Mawes for the day or take a delightful trip around the estuary stopping off at either Trelissick Gardens, Malpas or Truro. There are plenty of places to eat & drink in Falmouth and recently Rick Stein has opened his Fish & Chip Restaurant & Oyster Bar at Discovery Quay adding to the superb mix across the town.

Wonderful stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Pennare Barton large barn. The garden was great for our dog as fully enclosed, and the location ideal as just a minuteA?s walk from the south-west coast path. The barn itself was very well equipped as well as being very spacious and luxurious. Many thanks to Tom for being a good host!

Perfect winter escape

Exceptionally well done barn conversion. Perfect hidden gem on CornwallA?s Lizard peninsula. Walks from the door to the coast, creaks , farmland and villages nearby. Cosy and well equipped, light and airy, a joy to return to after fresh air days. Ditch the car - Cornish lanes are not made for big modern cars - walk and see more. A wonderful week - blessed by good weather but great place to hole up in any case. Huge sheltered terrace for summer and generous garden. Grounds immaculate. CanA?t fault it.

A comfortable house in a beautiful private location
Reviewed on 02/09/2021

A wonderful place to stay for a family. Off the beaten track, secluded and peaceful. There are field walks, coastal views and a beach on your doorstep. We hardly saw anyone! A spacious house, well equipped, comfy beds and great garden. The photos do not it justice. The property sits on a larger private estate and we benefitted from some home grown tomatoes and cucumber delivered to us by the gardener - who offered up some local tips too. A lovely touch. We explored the wider Lizard and Helford river, but our favourite activities were our adventures on foot from the barn. We enjoyed a lovely coast walk to Porthallow for a drink at the Pilchards Inn (about 40mins each way but that was with three young children in tow). All topped off by a week of sunshine. Many fond memories and we hope to return.

Tranquil
Reviewed on 12/08/2021

The property was fantastic and far larger then we were expecting from the pictures. Really clean and airy with everything you require to hand. Extremely tranquil and set on its own private estate with private beach just 5 minutes from the barn. The coastal path borders the property so if you enjoy walking then you are minutes from spectacular views. Our pooch came with us and had plenty of space to run around and explore as the carven is huge! Location I have given a 4 only due to the fact that it is 25 minutes away from Helston but thatA?s the price you pay if you want to get away from it all. Value I have given a 4 as it is quite pricey when you cannot enter the property until 5pm and have to exit at 10am so you pretty much lose a day. All in all I would recommend this property and would certainly go back in the future.

Amazing barn in stunning location
Reviewed on 27/06/2021

The property is very comfortable and stylish and was a delight to stay in for the week. It was great to be in such a quiet location so close to the coastal path for walks. The garden was perfect to let our dog roam freely without worry. Would perhaps like to see some loungers in the garden to make the most of the sunny weather.

Beautiful property in a tranquil location
Reviewed on 23/09/2020

Pennare Barton Large Barn is a beautiful, spacious and extremely well-equipped property in a remote, tranquil location; it has everything you need for a very comfortable stay. The welcoming owners could not have been more responsive and helpful in making our stay so enjoyable. Finishing touches such as a vase of fresh flowers, biscuits and milk were very much appreciated. There is a large south facing and beautifully maintained garden and patio, ideal for relaxing in the sun. Situated near Nare Point on the Helford Estuary, it has access to a private beach, just 5 minutes walk away, and is ideally located for walking the South West Coast Path, exploring the Lizard and unspoilt National Trust locations such as Kynance Cove and Poldhu Beach. We would definitely return to this outstanding property.
