These days Newquay's excellent surfing waters are the town's main industry, whereas it once used to be a major export port for the county's mining efforts as well as a north coast port for pilchard fisheries. Fistral Beach holds many surfing competitions throughout the year, and also hosts Run to the Sun over May Bank holiday, a VW and Custom Car Show. Both the Women's and Men's Gig Championships are held here, as well as a balloon festival and surf and lifesaving events. Newquay Zoo now houses 130 different species in sub tropical gardens in the centre of the town.

Neighbouring Watergate Bay and The Extreme Academy offers you a 'ski resort on a beach' and a plethora of activities to keep even the most active occupied. Fifteen Cornwall, founded by Jamie Oliver in 2002, sits on top of the two mile beach at Watergate offering inspirational views for the young chefs and professionals to create fantastic menus from local and seasonal produce. The Lappa Valley Steam Railway just outside Newquay offers both the old and young an interesting day out. Newquay Airport has made the north coast one of the easiest places in Cornwall to get to, with regular flights from various locations across the UK. The town also has an Aquarium, a Waterworld and numerous immensely pretty beaches for the less active. Trerice run by the National Trust is 3 miles outside of the town is an Elizabethan Manor House and Garden with restricted winter opening times.

Padstow is one of Cornwall's prettiest harbour towns and in recent years has become increasingly famous due to Celebrity Chef Rick Stein and his Seafood empire. This has boosted the town commercially and certainly put Padstow on the map for those looking for a gourmet Cornish experience. Rock, just across the River Camel, has become a popular location because of its great water sports and often the rich & famous (and occasionally even young royalty) can be seen drifting around! The port holds many pleasure craft, providing trips around the bay and up the river, as well as fishing boats supplying the mass of fish restaurants in the town.

Tourists first arrived in Padstow in 1899 with the arrival of the Railway; now the tramway is home to the Camel Trail. This fantastic 18 mile trail follows the route of the old railway along traffic free paths, providing a fairly flat cycle through from Padstow out as far as Bodmin, Wadebridge and even as far as Blisland on Bodmin Moor. It is eminently suitable for families and is a simply superb day out cruising along the estuary and countryside.

Penhellick barn - a lovely quiet location

We recently stayed at Penhellick barn for a week. It is set in a lovely countryside location and the barn conversion is very well equipped and very homely. Julie the owner was very helpful pointing out places to eat and visit during our stay. We took our dog with us and she had a great time and loved every minute of it. The hot tub was a lovely addition which we used every day.

An excellent holiday

The barn is very comfortable with all you need for a pleasant stay. The views from the barn are lovely looking out over fields. I would book this again if I was visiting this area. It is rural but only a short drive to coast and all North Cornwall offers.

The best family holiday!!

Penhellick Barn is set in a beautiful location, quiet with stunning views but yet perfectly postioned to get to all the great beaches, shops and activities etc. in minutes. The accommodation is spacious and well thought out with a home from home feel. Julie (the owner) is welcoming and relaxed. Would definitely return and have no hesitation in recommending to others.
