Property Location

Portreath, situated on the North Cornwall coast, about 5 miles north of Redruth, was originally a small fishing village. Today it's a beautiful retreat with a narrow harbour, secluded sandy beaches and a stream running to the sea on one side. It is ideal for swimming, surfing and windsailing in watched by the local Surf and Life Saving Club. Portreath offers the pleasures of sea and countryside with beautiful views, spectacular cliffs and walking trails. Illogan Woods is adjacent to Portreath with lovely streams and a circular walk leading to the 14th century church tower of Illogan. There is also Tehidy Country Park just outside of Portreath with its adjoining golf-course. It is a beautiful country park comprised of 250 acres of woodland, lakes, bridleways, cycling and nature trails. There are several ponds and a lake with swans and various kinds of waterfowl.

Occupying a dramatic valley location with one of the most spectacular and beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Coast, Porthtowan has been drawing visitors for years to take advantage of its natural sun trap. A superb location for a holiday to Cornwall with a fine beach and close to good main roads means that you can easily explore the surrounding area on days that are not conducive to sitting on the beach.

Porthtowan has one of Cornwall's finest surfing waves. Producing good waves at all states of the tide, the wave is particularly good in an easterly or south easterly when it really pumps with some lovely hollow barrels. It is not for the faint hearted and beginners should be careful. An excellent surf school operates from the beach. At low tide the beach stretches down to St Agnes Head and Chapel Porth Beach where you will find a lovely National Trust Cafe full of warming hot chocolate and fabulous views. From Porthtowan you are ideally located to reach the many beaches on the North Coast famous for attracting keen surfers and beginners alike.

Nice accommodation not far from the sea.

The accommodation was well equipped and clean, with everything needed for a weekA?s holiday. We enjoyed the hot tub which was clean and in good working order, it was good to see that it was checked during our stay and extra chemical added. There is a reasonable amount of privacy, but donA?t be surprised to see someone walking past while youA?re in the hot tub! With a 5 year old, the walk to Portreath took us about 40 minutes down an easy track. Great to have dog friendly accommodation.

Mermaid Cottage

Had a fantastic stay in Mermaid Cottage, exactly what we wanted. However double beds need to be king size with new mattresses and more comfortable sofa. Reclining chairs become very uncomfortable very quickly. Loved the hot tub. Would definitely recommend these cottages.

Lovely little place in a good location to explore the neighbouring towns and villages.

Overall a very enjoyable stay at the Mermaid cottage! Good space for the children to play in the surrounding area - a bit of a hill so needed watchful eyes. There's a communal play area with a good play frame which my two young children enjoyed. The cottage itself has good facilities, the Jacuzzi was a big bonus. It was unfortunate that the dishwasher wasn't working which I feel absolute essential when you're on a self-catering holiday so having to do the washing up I wasn't very happy to be honest. One of the bedrooms was ensuite with a shower - which worked fine; however, the shower in the main bathroom did not work - no hot water was coming out - which was a bit of a shame as meant that someone else had to use the bath instead of shower if the only working shower was occupied. We loved that fact that there was a washing machine was available and a rotary airer was up permanently that we could wash and dry our laundry easily. The wifi at its current state is not adequate - bearly any connection at all - if most, up to an hour in the late evening in a certain room of the cottage - so very disappointed when it's advertised with wifi.

Our New Year Family break 2016/17

Overall we had a wonderful time. The location is lovely with great views all round and the staff can't do enough to help. The cottage is small but well thought out - there was six of us and two large dogs but we never felt short of space (although the bedrooms are a bit small but having said that the storage in them is pretty good). Speaking of dogs, this cottage and this site are very dog friendly; there is a dedicated field onsite for exercising and there are two great beaches close by. We have two suggestions which might further improve comfort for future guests: The first being that the blinds in the bedrooms do let a lot of light in so perhaps thicker curtains or darker blinds would solve this. Secondly, we enjoy cooking for our selves and we did eat in quite a bit. So, we thought the the kitchen could do with a few more pots and utensils to make cooking for 6 people that bit easier. These are only minor criticisms though and did not in any big way detract from the lovely holiday that we had. We will definitely return.

Excellent week stay

It was our first time to stay at North Coast Holiday Cottages and it was an excellent experience. It was tricky to find it first time especially if you are on the SatNav. Where the Satnav says " you'll arrive on your destination on the left " go further until you find a small, discreet road on your right. Make a right on to that road up hill and you see a signage that says " North Coast Holiday Cottages ". Don't make a right on the signage. Its the next right actually. Our cottage was lovely with the best of views. Nice open plan arrangement provided lots of space for us to work around what suits us best. Amenities and appliances are all excellent. Staff were very friendly too. Wifi is available but not the best so i would not expect it to be super considering the location of the site. Although, 3G and 4G coverage is very good for your mobile network ( we're with 3 ). The area is conveniently located. 5mins to the lovely Portreath Beach, 15-17mins to Porthawan Beach. Truro, Falmouth, Redruth and sorrounding areas are all within 5-20mins away. The closest supermarket is tesco which just about 5mins away which should cater for all food and drinks need. The Fal River Cruise is a must. It was a nice experience for us. Just hope the weather is great when you go. Our cottage has a jacuzzi which was great to have for relaxation after all the driving around ( not to mention the almost 6 hour drive from London ) The site is quiet and far from the noises of the road. This is definitely a good base for your stay in Cornwall. I would easily recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great place to stay for a holiday in cornwall. And a piece of advice for husbands and boyfriends holidaying with their missus, turn a blind eye when driving past TR16 4HN, although its a challenge if you are staying for a week. I eventually gave in. Lol. Have a lovely stay as we did.

Have already re-booked. Perfect for families & dogs. Stunning views and great location

I'm from Devon, and have holidayed in Cornwall for many years. Now living in the Midlands I wanted my young children to have UK family holidays like I used to have - beach trips, arcades, long walks, barbecues, days out and days in. I had never been to Portreath before so was slightly cautious that the area would be too remote, too much driving involved to get to the places we wanted to go, and that the cottage - no matter how nice it looked in the photos- wouldn't be enough to make it the perfect holiday for us. We have two dogs as well and, having never holidayed with dogs, I wasn't sure what to expect. We re-booked for next year within a couple hours of arrival. Here's why: The cottage: Its beautiful. Really. Big enough for 5 people and two dogs to have all the room we needed. We had 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Not massively spacious bedrooms but we really, really didn't need the space, and there was more than enough wardrobe space (and we packed A LOT). The sofas were comfy, the TV had kids channels, music channels, all the basic TV we needed and a DVD player built in - one evening we bought a family film and was lovely all sitting together under blankets. The kitchen area is gorgeous, they provided everything we needed - small things you take for granted like cling film, can openers, that really make a difference. There's a dishwasher and washer/dryer. More than enough plates, cutlery etc. Plus a nice welcome pack of tea, coffee etc. to make sure you have something as soon as you arrive. Each cottage has its own driveway area right outside the house, safe and secure - we kept all doors and boots open in the day to keep the car cool when we weren't out and about, only locking it at night. We sent the woman who greeted us on day 1 a text message asking if we could use a BBQ one day whilst we were out - as we pulled up to our cottage that evening they turned up with a small kettle barbecue with firelighters and charcoal and told us to keep it as long as we needed. That was a great touch. The grounds: Stunning. The views are breathtaking, over a valley. The owner who designed the site really knows his stuff. Despite there being other cottages all around you its laid out to make you feel like there is no one else there. We never felt like we were sharing the place with other people. We had a hot tub - which I thought would be a novelty and I'd spend my week worrying about drowning kids - but this was used SO much, by all of us. I thought the kids would have preferred a swimming pool on site but this was so much better for them. They ask that dogs on the main site be kept on a lead - there is a massive field 30 seconds walk from the cottage we were in where they could run free which we went to several times a day as it was so close, but fortunately our dogs are behaved enough that we would take them off the lead to play fetch etc outside the cottage without issue. A small play park for kids (couple of swings, a tower and a slide) is on the main grounds and just about visible from every cottage - with our 5, 8 and 12 year old we felt happy letting them go to this themselves as we sat outside on the outside table to keep an eye on them. The location: 25 minutes to Newquay. 25 minutes to St Ives. We were lucky with traffic so could imagine this could be much worse, but I really didn't mind the drive - the A30 is really not far away at all so Cornwall is pretty much on your doorstep. Plus with such a nice cottage to come home to, we found our kids would be asking to come home earlier than usual. There isnt a pub on site, or really walking distance (2 miles I think the brochure says), which I know is important to some - but we stocked up on good food and drink early doors so didn't feel the need to venture out. The few towns nearby - Portreath & Porthtowan - are lovely, with a giant Tesco's 12 minutes away from the cottage too (drive) meaning you aren't remote if you fancied staying closer to home or needed to pop out. I really could go on - we would most certainly recommend this if you are after a relaxed, beautiful base to see Cornwall.

A fantastic base for exploring Cornwall

We've just returned from a fabulous week at Mermaid Cottage. Everything we needed was provided, the Jacuzzi was heavenly as were the views from the property. Fabulous stay at Mermaid cottage

My family of 5 had a fabulous stay at Mermaid cottage. It is a quiet site with friendly staff. The cottage was spacious, spotlessly clean and well equipped. There is a washing machine and drying rack/ washing line which is handy after a trip to the beach. The location was good with all major attractions within easy driving reach. To top it all a jacuzzi on the patio to relax in after a hard days sightseeing! Would definitely recommend and consider a return trip.

A perfect get away

Mermaid cottage is in a lovely setting with a nice quiet area, the hot tubs are fantastic and the cottages are really nice. The fact they take dogs is brilliant and having a field to be able to let them off in is a great touch. The cottage had plenty of room and was clean, tidy and well presented on our arrival. Very friendly staff and a nice relaxed atmosphere throughout our stay. The grounds are new and once they have developed a little more, it'll provide an even more secluded feel to the cottages. The only little things to improve on would be curtains rather than the blinds in the bedrooms as they let too much light in and some bigger glasses than the ones they have at present. Other than that, it was a fantastic stay and we are looking forward to returning in the near future. Thanks again

A secret little Haven

Absolutely loved this place. We've been visiting Cornwall for over 30years and saw the cottages being built back in 2014 and couldn't wait to stay! We definitely weren't disappointed, these have been built to a high specification and everything has been thought of right down to dish washing tablets, washing machine liquid, coffee, tea, milk and plenty of cutlery, glasses, plates,(you don't need to wash up during your stay!) huge bath towels, reclining chairs, a breakfast bar just to name a few things!! The hot tubs are fantastic even in cold temperatures we made the most of it and the views are amazing. The quietness of the area, we loved the farm feel, chickens and dogs roaming the land. Because we visited in February the reception isn't open but this wasn't a problem they are in call on a mobile & Kerian (the gardener) is always on site. The bedrooms are lovely too with huge wardrobes and comfy beds. If there was one thing I could change (more of a personal thing I'm sure) is the small half moon showers although the upside is the showers are very powerful and hot. We can't wait to return.

Absolutely fantastic

We spent a week in Mermaid cottage from Sunday 26 July 2015. We were directed immediately to the cottage on arrival and a member of staff greeted us outside the property. The cottage was lovely - spotlessly clean, modern, light and airy and had been completed to a very high specification. The layout and the facilities inside the cottage were excellent. They have really thought of everything - even down to providing hand soap in every bathroom and kitchen, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets and washing liquid for the washing machine. There was also a large welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk and sugar, so we could have a much needed drink after our long journey. The bedrooms were a good size with large wardrobes and plenty of storage space for your bags/cases. Both bathrooms were great too and the supply of towels was a really nice bonus. Each cottage has its own washing line and they even provided a washing basket and pegs too! The cottages are nicely spaced out and you can sit out at your own picnic table and patio area to enjoy the beautiful views. Although the other cottages were occupied, the layout and spacing allowed you to enjoy your own privacy and we often forgot we had neighbours! We took both our dogs and there are lovely empty fields adjacent to the plot where you are able to let them off for a good run. There is also a pathway nearby which takes you directly to Portreath beach. Although dogs are banned during the day, you are able to take them on to the beach after 7.00pm. The staff kindly provided us with a "Dog friendly guide to Cornwall Beaches " on our arrival. We would not hesitate to recommend this beautiful cottage - it was a great find and we will most definitely be coming back very soon!

Superb Cottage

We found Mermaid Cottage to be an excellent base for our stay in Cornwall. The cottage is furnished to a very high standard including everything you need in the kitchen and high quality linens. The cottages have been cleverly laid out to afford each one a good degree of privacy and have an elevated position with tremendous views. The site is very dog friendly with dog walking allowed in adjacent fields; our 4-legged friend enjoyed his week! Staff were helpful but unobtrusive. Location is ideal for easy access to St Ives, Eden/Heligan and many sandy beaches. We would recommend to friends and may return.

4 night stay

These holiday cottages are an absolute gem . They are bright , modern and spotlessly clean with everything you require in them . We will definitely be going again . Lovely peaceful location , shame the beach isn't dog friendly.

Can't wait to go again...

I couldn't fault anything about my stay there, the staff and location were excellent and the accommodation itself surpassed expectations. Everything at the cottage had been thought about and catered for. I will be recommending this place to friends and cant wait to book another stay there myself.

Will book again and recommend to others

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage, great location, lovely views, peaceful. The cottage had everything you needed, it was clean, comfortable and homely but thankfully without clutter. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Can't find any faults, if I was really nit-picking I would say that it would be handy if the cottage had cafetiere for making fresh coffee and a possibly a hoover to keep things as tidy as when we arrived, but as the cottages are very new, these things take time to be added because of the extra expensive. We will definetely be back as it is a real treat to be able to stay somewhere with your dog that isn't a hovel!

Enjoyable Holiday

Comfortable, clean accommodation in a peaceful spot with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Easy access to A30 makes it a good location for exploring both the north and south coasts of the west Cornwall peninsula.

Family of four

We found Mermaid Cottage on the internet at Christmas and hoped it would live up to expectations in reality - as soon as I opened the door I sighed with relief- everything was lovely! It was just as beautiful as the pictures and the feeling of space and light was fabulous. The owners have given the cottages extra homely touches and bright clean furnishing which are of course all brand new which made it feel like our own 'Holiday Home. As a family we all really liked the reclining sofas in the lounge and the flat screen TV on the wall - ready for late evening viewing after a long day on the beach! As a busy parent I loved the washing machine ,microwave and dishwasher which made light work of any cooking and the kitchens are well equipped with lots of kit which is great. We were all really impressed with the accommodation- a real home from home but in a quite spot where the kids can run around with the sites resident chickens and be safe - plus with the most amazing view of the countryside in the valley below. The site staff are really lovely and helpful and the little shop sells nice basic plus the owners have organised local retailers to pop along a few times a week to sell bakery goods and bacon sandwiches and coffee in the mornings. Once a week a local restaurant sets up a Pizza tent on site and makes delicious fresh pizzas to order- the owners sell local beers and there is face painting too- people gather together and chat which is lovely . We were really impressed with the site, the very high quality of the accommodation - so close to the great beaches too - the friendliness of the staff and the view to die for. Needless to say we will be back shortly Well done

Family memories made

There were 8 of us, 4 under the age of 4, the cottage was child friendly and we felt it was very much like home from home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and was sad to leave. The kids had a wonderful time and it was fantastic to see them making their own little memories of a fabulous family holiday. Would recommend 100%

From the Owner:

Four nights with my wife and four year old son

The staff on our arrival were very friendly and welcoming, the cottage itself was spotless - we were debating whether we were the first to have stayed there! Very well laid out with lots of space. The views were amazing as these cottages are set up high on the hillside. We bought eggs laid by hens just outside the cottage and the area was a good setting off point for many of cornwall attractions. Overall we all had an amazing holiday at The Mermaid and will definitely be recommending it to others, hope to be back at some point.

a fabulous break away

This was a fantastic break. The accommodation was brilliant. Plenty of space inside and out. Natalie (the host) and her team were always on hand to help. The highlight was the amazing coffee and the easter egg hunt. My only suggestion is a children's playground. This would've been very appreciated as we sat back admiring the spectacular view over a glass of wine. I highly recommend staying at this cottage.
