Property Location

Portreath, situated on the North Cornwall coast, about 5 miles north of Redruth, was originally a small fishing village. Today it's a beautiful retreat with a narrow harbour, secluded sandy beaches and a stream running to the sea on one side. It is ideal for swimming and surfing, watched by the local Surf and Life Saving Club. Portreath offers the pleasures of sea and countryside with beautiful views, spectacular cliffs and walking trails. Illogan Woods is adjacent to Portreath with lovely streams and a circular walk leading to the 14th century church tower of Illogan. There is also Tehidy Country Park just outside of Portreath with its adjoining golf-course. It is a beautiful country park comprised of 250 acres of woodland, lakes, bridleways, cycling and nature trails. There are several ponds and a lake with swans and various kinds of waterfowl. Occupying a dramatic valley location with one of the most spectacular and beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Coast, Porthtowan has been drawing visitors for years to take advantage of its natural sun trap. A superb location for a holiday to Cornwall with a fine beach and close to good main roads means that you can easily explore the surrounding area on days that are not conducive to sitting on the beach.

Porthtowan has one of Cornwall's finest surfing waves. Producing good waves at all states of the tide, the wave is particularly good in an easterly or south easterly when it really pumps with some lovely hollow barrels. It is not for the faint hearted and beginners should be careful. An excellent surf school operates from the beach. At low tide the beach stretches down to St Agnes Head and Chapel Porth Beach where you will find a lovely National Trust Cafe full of warming hot chocolate and fabulous views. From Porthtowan you are ideally located to reach the many beaches on the North Coast famous for attracting keen surfers and beginners alike.

best holiday for a long while

Me and my girls (age 20 and 24) had an amazing holiday here at Mainbeach Cottage.....still in holiday mode. We had two weeks here and it was so relaxing, it's peaceful, secluded and we totally chilled out. The cottage is excellent, it was clean and very well provided....we were over the moon with it, loads of space. Yeah I know a previous review was annoyed with there being a 'wobbly tap' in the kitchen and yes the 'wobbly tap' was still there but at the end of the day it is only a 'wobbly tap' it certainly didn't spoil our holiday. The bedrooms were a good size and plenty of wardrobe space not that we needed it as we had amazing weather and spent all our time in shorts and t-shirts (sorry don't wish to make anyone jealous). From the main road you have Porthreath beach to your right and Porthtowan beach to your left both of them only a couple minutes drive away and with plenty of facilities and stunning sunsets. We didn't spend much time at either as we were happy to stay at Mainbeach, we had our own patio and bit of green where we just enjoyed being able to relax in the sun spending time catching up. Redruth is the nearest town about 5-10 mins away, with a Tescos, petrol station and plenty of other shops there as well, it also has the nearest Catholic Church which was handy for us on Sundays. And of course Mainbeach has a jacuzzi....as the weather was too warm we didn't use it during the day but come around 8-9 in the evening as the sun started disaappearing around the corner it was ideal to finish off the day. As I said we had such a chilled holiday, can't fault the place, good chance we'll be back next year.

A lovely break in Cornwall

Main Beach was a very good place to have a break as it was easy to find and only half an hour from St. Ives. We thoroughly enjoyed our six night stay in this lovely modern cottage. Most things required were supplied and several items we didn't need to use. Good to have a fridge, freezer, washing machine and dish washer. The bathroom with both a bath and separate shower was excellent. The central heating was very efficient and soon warmed the house when needed. Only two things needed attention, first the tap on the sink was very loose and when the owners were informed of this, we were told that they knew about it though every plumber they had asked to fix it was unable to do so. However, this really did need to be repaired as it was not easy to use. Second, the lovely hot tub needed to be a degree or two hotter and we were not able to adjust it. It was set at 34.5 degrees and needed to be at about 37 degrees.

General comments

For the cost to rent the cottage I wouldnA?t have expected watered down cheap soap to be left in the bathroom and kitchen. In previous properties we have stayed in we have had a range of expensive toiletries left. I also think 4pm is far too late to check in. Most properties are 2pm. Also to ask for AGBP10 per hour for earlier entry is extortionate giving the high price you are already paying. I would still recommend the cottage but think it could be improved with the above suggestions.

From the Owner:
Thank you for your honest comments. Unfortunately the early check in charge is because I do not wish to be seen favouriting cottage check ins. Cornwall’s Cottages have a standard 4pm check in for their guests and as we change four Cottages in one day some of which do have 2.30 check ins we need to prioritise the 230 check ins, if we are lucky enough to be on top of our cleans for that weekend yes we do ask a fee like all other hotels do to. As for the soap, it is purchased from bookers and is their standard range, so apologies if you feel it was cheap I can assure you my weekly soap cost for all my Cottages it works out quite expensive and is something that we do for the likes of families coming down that may have forgotten soap and again toilet rolls that I supply these little bits to ensure you can go to the toilet or wash your hands. Also the cream tea supplied is again so you can rest and have a Cornish treat on arrival. I am glad you had a nice week in cornwall.

Maim Beach Cornwall

We had a lovely stay in this immaculate cottage with stunning views. Good base to explore Cornwall. About a 20 minute drive to Perranporth and 30 minutes to Newquay. Kitchen was well equipped and all rooms were clean and tidy. A lovely touch was the owners left us a welcome gift of Scones, Jam and cream with tea and coffee. The hot tub was lovely to relax in after being out all day. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Main Beach and would stay here again.

Main Beach Cottage - March 2018

I recently returned from staying in Main Beach Cottage in Portreath Cornwall. The cottage is fully equipped for a Self Catering Holiday with a Supermarket 3miles away. The views were stunning and the Jacuzzi was a welcome bonus to relax in at the end of the day. My only critique would be that it would be nice to have a canopy to pull over the Jacuzzi if the weather is inclement. I was unable to use a couple of times due to rain and that was one of the reasons I booked the cottage. The owners were very welcoming and Cathy and Kierin were outstanding with there service. Definitely will visit again :-)

From the Owner:
Thank you so much for the wonderful review! We would be happy to welcome you back any time. We really appreciate any feedback and suggestions as we want to ensure we offer the best experience possible to all of our guests. Best wishes North Coast Holiday Cottages.

Too short a stay

Lovely cottage in a well kept estate. Would happily go back as we just didn't stay long enough. Could do with a separate recycling bin as the site has facilities which are a bit of a walk from the cottage

Perfect cottage in a perfect setting!

Main Beach cottage was not what I was expecting, it was better! Ample space, fitted out perfectly, high standard of cleanliness and a view to die for. A very friendly meet and greet upon arrival. A very picturesque, quiet location which was just what I was looking for. An added bonus of a selection of a few essential items such as washing up liquid, toilet rolls, washing machine tablets etc was a pleasant surprise. I really cannot fault anything. I loved staying there and will definitely book my next Cornwall trip there!

Late summer holiday

My husband and I had a much needed 14 day break in Cornwall. The cottage was very well appointed; lovely, very new and contemporary with high quality fittings throughout. The bed was very comfortable and the cottage was in a great location, not only with wonderful views but also brilliantly located for getting around Cornwall as minutes away from the A30, yet you feel you are right in the heart of the peaceful countryside. There is an old disused tramway we discovered, that is now a great cycle track, which runs past the cottage, which having taken our bikes with us, was a great bonus. It was also great for walking our dog. We will certainly return for another holiday.

Stay at main beach

A superbly appointed cottage with really helpful and friendly owners. Price was very good and particularly so given that they also allow dogs - one of the major restrictions in finding somewhere for us. Even better for dog owners is the use of the owners fields for off lead exercising and the fact that 50 yards down the lane there is a safe bridle path running either to portreath or porthtowan. Great base location for exploring the southern part of Cornwall.
