Property Location

Originally named Nankersey, meaning valley of the reed swamp, the village was given its name by Dutch engineers from Flushing in the Netherlands who built the three main quays in the village. The grand houses on St Peter's Hill, the road that leads into the village, were owned by captains of the packet ships (mail boats) that docked in nearby Falmouth. The Spanish Armada intended to land here in their attack on England but they were not able to capture it.

Due to its position, Flushing is said to be one of the warmest villages in the United Kingdom. The beaches at Kiln are extremely popular in the summer months, offering superb views of Falmouth Docks, the Carrick Roads and St. Anthony's Head. There are two pubs, the Royal Standard on St Peter's Hill and the Seven Stars on Trefusis Road opposite Fish Cross. There is also a fish restaurant, formerly the Sticky Prawn, now the Quay Cafe located on Ferry Quay. Flushing Regatta Week is held annually during late July or early August, and features water-based activities such as bathtub racing, rowing, swimming and sailing races, sand-castle building contests, a mini-marathon through Mylor and Flushing, an open-air church service, a pub quiz, crab catching and a carnival on Saturday night, and has achieved marked popularity locally.

A beautiful seaside house

It was our third stay as we managed to return for the first time in four years to our beloved JacqueyA?s House. We loved it!! There were nice new touches to the house, and welcome flowers. we very much enjoyed going to the village fetes in Flushing, too. Thank you for another very memorable stay!

Jacque's House Flushing Cornwall

Jacque's House is placed in a beautiful setting in the small village of Flushing, with two local friendly pubs both doing good food and a good local village shop. The House has a well-equipped kitchen and a relaxing sitting room. Lovely courtyard for that morning coffee, plus no shortage of reading material. Jacque's House very clean and with good showers. The only negative thing we found the king size bed (not a true king size in length) the mattress to be very, very hard. Found it difficult to sleep on! Parking! Parking! Parking! What can I say......difficult! special at weekends and when events are on, got easier during the week. We had to use pay and display the odd time. Flushing Ferry was very handy to use. Last ferry leaving Flushing 17.20 and Falmouth 17.30 (summer Timetable) need to keep this in mind when going out. Plenty of Taxi's in Falmouth or water Taxi's. A nice touch was a postcard left, so that we could spend AGBP10 credit in the village shop. We really enjoyed our time in Cornwall .......returning soon!

A great place to stay

This was a great property to stay at, and far more spacious then it looks on the outside. Our kids loved crabbing next to the ferry, a minute away from the property. Both pubs were great too.

Wonderful warm welcoming family home

We thoroughly enjoyed everything about Jaqueys. It was a fantastic place to stay. So warm and cosy. The books were such a bonus. The children enjoyed looking through them in bed! The kitchen was very well equipped! We felt the house had its own personality! We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Jacque's House Flushing Cornwall

Jacque's House is lovely, a real home from home. It is well equipped, comfortable and cosy and a nice balance between having practicality and surrounded by art and literature. The space works really nicely and the rooms are all light and airy. I suspect it is equally, beautifully cosy in the winter, with a fire going in the living room. The location is perfect, looking out over Flushing Quay and it provides excellent access to Falmouth and Penryn and of course, travel around other beautiful parts of Cornwall. We all really enjoyed our stay and didn't really want to leave. Yes, it has no parking but this never proved to be an issue with plenty of street marking nearby. All in all, a lovely place to come and chill out and one I hope to visit again soon. Highly recommended.

Cottage in Flushing

We know the area, but have never stayed in Flushing. Lovely Cornish village with 2 good pubs, especially the Royal Standard, great food. The cottage was centrally situated, very comfortable and well equipped. Owner had left a huge library of books, would keep you going for a year!!! The location of Flushing gives you convenient road access to main spine roads when you want to tour around beautiful Cornwall. Also you can get over to Falmouth by ferry (foot passenger only). Parking can be a problem in these pretty villages, but little price to pay for the Quay just over the road from the front door. We found a road around the back with easy parking, which was a few minutes walk. We had a brilliant week there, before we moved on to a family wedding in Devon. It doesn't get much better! Many thanks. Thoroughly recommend Jacquey's House.

Fabulour location in water front village with all amenities.

Fabulour location in quiet waterfront village with two pubs, local shop and restaurent. we tried them all, good food and beer in all. Shop covers all the basics and although parking is on street we did not have to walk far. Cottage is clean and well stocked with kitchen equipment and garden chairs. Fabulous libary in house with many books and maps of the area. Have no hesitation in reccommending this cottage.

Fantastic cottage in a great location

We absolutely loved the cottage, very well presented in both decoration and cleanliness. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils etc. and everything was better than we could have expected. The location is perfect for a visit to Cornwall; the village is pretty and has great views across to Falmouth, plus it's no more than an hour to nearly everywhere within Cornwall! With a village shop about 10 doors up the road, a couple of lovely pubs (one just a few more doors away than the shop) and a restaurant on the quayside less than a minute's walk away, what more could you want? We definitely want to come back and stay again and spend some more time exploring the beautiful county. Many thanks!!

Feels like home in a great location

This was our second trip to Jacquey's House and we are already planning our third. It's and old house and 'homely' rather than chic and modern and we like that because you can relax. The location is amazing and views keep us smiling constantly. We like the village and it's amenities and lthe local walks, gardens and opportunities for boat trips keep us happily occupied. We love it!

Late summer holiday for 2 + 2

A tardis-like cottage in an attractive village a 5 minute ferry from Falmouth. Reasonably spacious for 4, would be comfortable for 6. Shared garden to the front which is great for late afternoon drinks and a small garden rear garden up steep steps to a lawn suitable for drying clothes. No parking with the cottage but even in high summer never had a problem finding a space within a 2-3 minute walk. Plenty of crockery, cutlery, pots, pans and gadgets in the kitchen including a new dishwasher and washer dryer. Three reasonable sized bedrooms - the main room on the 2nd floor has a super king size which is two zipped together singles and which is on the hard side, a standard double and a twin room where the second single is a truckle. Two new fitted bathrooms - the en suite on the second floor has an excellent shower which makes up for the rather weedy shower over the bath on the first floor. My only criticism would be that the house could do with a deep clean - all the main surfaces were clean but the higher shelves and behind the bread bin were very sticky, some windows were very grubby, the dishwasher needed the filters cleaning, the bath had a sandy residue from the previous occupants and the corners and under the sofa & chairs could have done with a good vacuum.

From the Owner:
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback, it is most valuable and helps us improve our service, which we constantly strive to do. Jacquey's House has been and remains a family home as well as a holiday let and, as such, has more books, and other possessions in it than the average holiday cottage, something that many of our guests particularly enjoy. Keeping all of this in tip top order is a challenge in the main part of the season, when there is limited time at changeover, and regrettably it is one we have not met on this occasion. We apologise for the shortcomings in our preparation and we are addressing this.

Not for us

The location is definitely the best thing about this house. It's adjacent to the quay where you can catch the foot ferry across to Falmouth. A lovely little restaurant right on the quayside and lots of fishing and crabbing to be done. The house however, wasn't for us. There were lots of books in every room which made the house feel cluttered. Lots of little ornaments that hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The rug in the living room was filthy and full of stains which as soon as we walked in and saw it made us feel instantly uneasy. The living room was dark as the only light was from one sash window at the front of the room. The window at the back of the room wasn't letting in any light as the hedge outside was so overgrown it had completely blocked the window - same goes for the main bathroom window, so overgrown when I opened it I was met with lots of leaves and branches. The kitchen was a nice room but again cluttered with books and lots and lots of pots, pans, China, fish kettle?! The hot water came out nuclear hot and we all burned our hands constantly. The small patio area outside clearly hadn't be maintained or even swept for some time and we were met with a dead bird on the wall on the day of our arrival. Someone did come half through our two week holiday and tidied up outside but it would have been nice if that had taken place before our arrival. The little garden at the top of the steps was nice and we spent a lot of time up there having BBQ's. The first floor bedrooms were OK although my kids didn't like the "creepy pictures" that were everywhere. The loft room was nice with lovely views but it wasn't without its issues. The t.v. stand was loose so t.v. wobbled and listed, we had to prop it up on one side to be able to watch it. There was no headboard on bed and my wife kept catching her hair on the door handles immediately behind her head. The curtains were so thin they would wake us up at 5am. The doors on the shower wouldn't stay closed and we had to tie a hair band around the handles to be able to shower properly. The worst thing about the house though is that it just wasn't clean enough. There were urine stains under the toilet seat in the main bathroom, cobwebs, dust everywhere and the fridge smelled like rotten fish had been kept in there. The parking was a nightmare. We knew there was no parking space with the house which didn't bother us until we realised that we would sometimes have to park our car half a mile away! The streets are very narrow and lots of cars are parked along them making it difficult to drive down them and impossible to park on. Sometimes we got in near the sailing club but only if the club was closed. I'd have to drop my wife and kids off outside the house with groceries then drive around the village looking for a parking space. It was really difficult unloading and loading luggage, bikes, groceries etc. when you're blocking roads and access to other houses. Once we managed to park outside the house but were promptly asked to move it. We hate giving negative reviews but this house just didn't feel like a holiday home and there's no excuse for it not being cleaned thoroughly and properly before our arrival.

From the Owner:
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are very sorry that Jacquey's House was not for you. We would like to apologise if there were shortcomings in its preparation and we are addressing the issues that you raise. We are happy to be contacted by guests to resolve issues such as water temperature and there are also instructions in the house information file. There is sharp change of level behind the house, with a small stone cliff about 60 centimetres away from the rear living room wall. The growth and lack of light you comment on is associated with that rock face and, while we try to control the brambles each year, it is not easy to access. Narrow streets streets are part of the character of seaside villages in Cornwall and parking can be difficult at the height of the holiday season, but most of the time people manage to work around it. We have been on a waiting list for a dedicated parking space for a long time, but these are in short supply and we cannot do more. This house has been and remains a family home as well as a holiday let; many of our guests enjoy the wealth of reading material and the well-equipped kitchen and comment on them in their reviews but unfortunately it was not to your taste.

Great house in great location

The house was wonderful in a perfect location with views of the water and just across from the quay where we could catch the ferry to Falmouth. Nicely decorated with plenty of evening reading material. The house was generally comfortable although the double bed in the top bedroom was extremely hard! Had a great time and would definitely book again.

Beautiful views across the river

3 storey house with fabulous loft conversion. We slept in the loft and wakened to a view of the river and harbour every morning. First floor has 2 bedrooms and modern bathroom. It was ideal for 2 couples who want 2 bathrooms. Kitchen had every utensil known to man. Amazing and eclectic selection of books. We had been warned that parking could be a problem but we parked easily and reasonably near to the cottage but that could be different in summer. Even the weather was kind.

Lovely house, great spot

Lovely house, cosy & spacious. Garden needed mowing as was overgrown, but we didn't use it in the end as spent a lot of time out as blessed with brilliant weather. Comfy beds and plenty of hot water, and huge array of books! Great spot, peaceful but Falmouth, Roseland (with lovely St Mawes) and beaches all near by. Nice to have option to use car or hop on a ferry for trips out. Little beach a short walk away in Flushing was a hit with the children for paddling, rock pools and boat watching, and some lovely walks from the village. Great week, thank you.

Location

The only thing that stopped me giving the location an excellent was the car parking in the street, often driving some distance to park also the streets are very narrow, talking to a couple of local people one afternoon there have been numerous damage to parked vehicles through the main street from other passing vehicles. i would only recommend this house outside of the season because of above and unavailability of parking. there are 27 stairs to the master bedroom some of them quite narrow and steep so you do need to be capable and fit to use this bedroom.

From the Owner:
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We acknowledge that traffic and parking in a village as small as Flushing can be difficult - tight streets are part of the character of seaside villages throughout Cornwall - which is why we mention parking options on the property page. We have been trying to negotiate a dedicated parking space for some time, but the waiting lists are long. Trefusis Road widens out beyond the lefthand bend at the sailing club (about 100 yds past the house) and there is more room to park on the hill there.

A quirky cottage by the water

Although this cottage looks tiny from the exterior, it is a veritable 'tardis' and much bigger inside. The furnishings are comfy, and the walls of many rooms and the landings are lined with books. The kitchen is well stocked with equipment and a voucher to spend at the local shop was very welcome. The view from the top bedroom looks out over the water to Falmouth and, as we had such good weather, was lovely. The local pubs can supply good beer, views and food, and are within easy walking distance. The ferry to Falmouth is very regular though finished at tea time, so you need to be organised, or get a but/taxi home. It's not cheap either but you can get a ticket at Falmouth Quay if you are going to go over regularly and that may save a few quid. Personally, I saw bobbing about on the water as part of the holiday and loved it. We walked on the SW coastal path, visited Trebah Gardens, beaches, ate, slept, and smiled....a lot.

A very special house!

This was our second stay at Jacquey's House in Flushing. We absolutely love the house, which is exactly to our taste in terms of the tastefully decorated interior, the well-provided kitchen, the incredible 'library' throughout the house of books, the fabulous location being in front of the lovely little harbour area, etc., etc. We particularly love the attic ensuite with a view of Falmouth from the bed! We didn't have such great weather on this trip, so it made it even more important to have a lovely gem of a house to stay in. We've stayed in a number of cottages in Cornwall over the last 25 years, but this is by far the best!

A great family holiday...

A fantastic little house, in a fantastic location. Apart from the lack of parking close by (which was more than manageable), this was a great base from which to explore Cornwall for the first time with our boys (4 & 8). The house had everything we needed and was great to come back to and relax in after a busy day out and about. Hopping on the ferry to Falmouth was always fun, as was crab fishing off the quayside, and I'm sure we caught the same 5 crabs each night.

Memorable relaxing stay in Flushing

We had a very enjoyable stay. Flushing is a pretty little village and the house is located right in its centre next to the quay with fabulous views across to Falmouth - particularly lovely to view with a cup of tea in bed in the top bedroom! The ferry is an easy (but pricey) journey over to Falmouth which is also a charming town with lots of interesting shops to browse and a good choice of restaurants and cafes. Ragamuffins was particularly good for home baked cakes! The coastal walks in this part of the world are stunning and punctuated by some picturesque pubs with good food. We also had a delicious meal at the Waterside restaurant which was very near the house on Flushing quay. All in all a memorable stay!

My family's stay

Basically the cottage was ideal in location and space. A few comments made by my family who stayed there for 3 nights. 1) The upper top double room was "cold" 2) The mattress on the lower double bed was uncomfortable - one could feel the springs. 3) Hardly any soap or loo paper there on arrival.

From the Owner:
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We try hard to get everything right for our guests and are sorry that one or two details were not up to scratch on this occasion. We have checked out the heating in the top room. It appears that the immediately previous guests preferred the room to be cooler, as the radiators were simply turned down to a lower setting. We will be replacing the mattress in the first floor for the upcoming season.

Our stay at Jacquey's House

A wonderful property, superbly fitted out with everything we needed for our weeks stay and what a library!!!! One of the best we have ever stayed in a lovely location with lots to see and do. The booking was easy and the service excellent. Out of season so parking was easy. Other comments: - Everyone should visit Islington Wharf, Penryn for 'Seabourne Fish' and 'Deli & Spice' and Falmouth to sample the delights of 'Stone's Bakery'. Forget the smokehouse, unhelpful!!!

Jacquey's House

The cottage was not as clean as I would have liked. Parking was awful which meant a long way to carry shopping, luggage etc. Good views. Parking was available during the day on a small unfenced quay, at a price. Would have liked basics eg washing up liquid and spare loo rolls

From the Owner:
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are taking action on the issues within the cottage that you raised as we are very concerned to get things right. We aim to leave starter supplies of essentials, such as loo rolls, and we also provide a complimentary£10 voucher for the village shop, which can be used to top up these. At the height of the season traffic and parking in a village as small as Flushing can be difficult and the parking options are mentioned on the property pages, but the location in the heart of the community, within a short walk of the village shop, the pubs and the ferry, is also one of the cottage's main attractions. We are so glad you enjoyed the views.

Jacquey's House - relax and watch the world go by

An almost perfect location to relax and watch the world go by. The cottage itself belonged to the owner's mother from what I understand, the Jacquey, is stacked with books and has a homely feel. It is on 3 floors, the master bedroom in the eaves is a delight, lie in bed and gaze through the velux window watching the boats pass up and down the estuary. Or better still cross the narrow road and watch while sitting on a bench drinking coffee (morning) or wine (evening) and soaking up the sun, weather for us was great. There is a rear courtyard and a garden, up a few steps, but we didn't use as happy with the benches or the small grassed area in front. Flushing has a small stony beach which is popular. Opposite the cottage you can jump on a ferry to Falmouth, not cheap, we found it easier and more flexible to drive and park by the sandy beaches, for free, the town centre is only 10 minutes walk from there. Flushing is lovely and quiet, a small shop, a couple of pubs and a restaurant, that's it. The Seven Stars has a good selection of local beers with standard fayre, the Royal Standard is the opposite, I had a most amazing Spanish Style Fish Stew. The Waterside restaurant is open all day, great for breakfast, mid-morning coffee and cake and they even have a Paella evening. Don't expect to park outside the cottage but plenty of spaces further through the village - it's a no-through road so only local traffic. On the negative side, no toilet rolls whatsoever, no bin bags, no hair dryer, all minor. Could have been cleaner, I think the reason was because the vacuum cleaner has no 'suck'. All in all though a great place to stay.
