Property Location
Porthpean has a marvellous central location, a mere 5 minutes from the centre of St Austell yet sitting on a south east facing hill with a splendid view of St Austell Bay. The eighteen hole golf course has a mix with the front nine in a parkland setting bordering Penrice Woods with distant rural views of Cornwall, the back nine has an unsurpassed view across the bay towards Fowey. Porthpean Beach is sandy and sheltered and is a safe place to swim, paddle, explore rock pools or watch the nesting birds on the cliff.
Less than a 10 minute drive away is the pretty harbour of Charlestown which offers plenty of places to get food and drink, a sweet shop, a couple of galleries and a Ship Wreck museum. It can also be reached by means of the coastal footpath from Porthpean. It is an excellent village to visit for a relaxed pub meal whilst enjoying views over the harbour and out to sea. There is also a small beach.
Pentewan (just north of Mevagissey) has an industrial past that is still evident in the village today. It was once a busy harbour built by a local mine owner for shipping china clay. Inland is the Pentewan Valley Trail which is 4km of woodland and riverside walking following an old gauge railway to the village of London Apprentice. The village also has a small, friendly pub with tables on the old harbourside. There is a wonderful sandy, beach which is ideal for families.
The town of Mevagissey is just a 5 minute drive in a southerly direction. Mevagissey is a wonderful little Cornish fishing village in South East Cornwall. Ideally located within easy reach of both The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project. The tiny seaside village is packed with old Cornish cottages complete with narrow alleyways leading to converted fish cellars offering gift shops, galleries, pubs and cafes. Once a major Pilchard port, now the harbour boasts a smaller fleet, many of which provide sea tours, or boat trips to Fowey situated further up the South coast. The Harbour provides an ideal back drop for a fish and chip supper, followed by a stroll through the town at dusk.
With a 10 minute drive to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and 30 minutes to the Eden Project, Mevagissey provides a excellent location for the keen gardener. Gorran Haven nearby offers an alternative day out as well as Pentewan with its fresh water dock basin. You can continue south along the coast down to Caerhays Castle and Porthluney Cove. Cliff walks in all directions along the coast offer spectacular views out across the St Austell Bay.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project are within an easy drive and so this is an excellent location for the keen gardener. Nearby Gorran Haven offers an alternative day out. You can continue south along the coast down to Caerhays Castle and Porthluney Cove. Cliff walks in all directions along the coast offer spectacular views out across the St Austell Bay with the coastal path only a few minutes walk from the cottage.
St Austell was once the major producer of the world's China Clay. Now with cheaper foreign imports the industry is in decline but The Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum set in two former working pits depicts the countryside in years gone by. Wet weather activities could include the visitor centre at St Austell Brewery, sampling beers and ales made on the premises. The brewery has recently started exporting its products across the Tamar River to England, so you may just find where your favourite brew is made.

A dream location
Reviewed on 19/08/2020What an amazing place Hallane Mill is! The secluded location, right on the edge of a quiet beach, was perfect. It was exactly what we needed to escape the insanity which 2020 had become. We spent days just relaxing in the garden or on the beach, listening to the birds and the gentle lapping of the waves just a few metres away. Blissful! I cannot rate this property highly enough. We were so sad to come home.

Brilliant weeks holiday
Reviewed on 03/08/2020Had a brilliant week at Hallane Mill. Ideal place for a relaxing week in Cornwall. Would of returned next year except the excessive price increase has stopped that.
Cornwalls Cottages replied:
Thank you, Richard, for your review. We are so glad you experienced the magic of Hallane Mill. You were incredibly lucky to have benefitted from a generous pricing scheme for the property to ensure as many people experienced Hallane Mill in it's first few years. The property is now being advertised at market rates. Unfortunately, the true value of the property is substantially higher than you paid. It is a premium property in an incredible location and it is one of the finest places to stay in Cornwall.

What an amazing place - I wish it was my secret
Reviewed on 29/07/2020Hallane Mill is incredible. It is a wonderful place; the location is unforgettable. It has been beautifully and lovingly restored and is an absolute gem. My family and I had the most memorable and terrific time and we could have stayed there indefinitely, tucked away from the world in a small piece of Heaven. We wish it were our secret to keep, but sadly not. Absolutely no complaints and we cannot stop raving and dreaming about the place. Magical. 100% recommended.

Lovely Property
Reviewed on 08/01/2020We had a perfect stay at this beautiful property with the pebble beach and the coastal path right on the doorstep. Everything was sparkly clean, with a generous welcome hamper, and the cottage was very well equipped. The views from the front windows were stunning, just what we were hoping for and more. It was perfect for us, and the appeal of the cottage means it is quite remote with a car being essential.

Stunning cottage
Reviewed on 22/08/2019What a wonderful location, what a stunning cottage! If you are looking for peace and quiet, in an immaculate, tastefully decorated cottage in a magnificent location this is the place to go. It seems like you have your own private beach which is just a stones throw from the house and even though we were there through the recent storms it didn't spoil our stay. Very close to Mevagissy, Fowey, Charlestown and Gorran Haven which we visited and wonderful walks right on the doorstep as the coastal path runs right next to the house. We loved it there and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to family and friends

A secluded oasis
Reviewed on 05/06/2019Hallane Mill is a secluded oasis in its own little corner of Cornwall. Spotlessly clean with quality appliances - A credit to the housekeeper and owners.. Tucked down a country lane with no near neighbours, and just a few steps from a rocky little beach, perfect for fishing.. The coastal path does pass nearby, but we only saw one or two walkers a day.. About 3 miles to an Asda supermarket and only around 10 to 15 minutes to Charlestown on one side and Mevagissey on the other.. Would highly recommend if you need somewhere to just chill out and recharge the batteries...

Amazing Stay
Reviewed on 17/03/2019The Cottage lived up to our expectations & more. The location is amazing. Well worth navigating the narrow lanes to get to it! We visited in March when it was cold & windy but sitting inside with the log burner lit watching the waves crash onto the beach was stunning. The accommodation had everything you could possibly need and the lovely touches such as flowers and shortbread and provisions so we could have a cup of tea or coffee on arrival was much appreciated. We will definitely be coming back possibly trying it in a different season to appreciate sitting outside enjoying the beach and scenery around. I can't say enough about the place it's gorgeous.

Holiday Bliss!
Reviewed on 29/12/2018We have just spent 9 nights staying in this wonderful place and it couldn't have been more perfect! It's nice and quiet, perfectly styled and wonderfully comfortable. I knew we would love the view from this cottage (it truly is stunning!) but we had no idea how much we would love the house too! I believe the photos don't quite do the place justice! Was a little unsure finding the place as of course it is a little remote but the instructions are very accurate and you just have to trust them :). I hope we are lucky enough to stay again. Many thanks for an amazing holiday.

An opportunity that should not be missed:
Reviewed on 18/10/2018A stay at Hallane Mill should be on everyone's 'bucket list'. A comfortable very well equipped cottage situated in it's own idyllic Cornish cove. No traffic noise - only the sounds of the sea. To all intents it is far removed from the 'real world'. You will leave with your batteries completely recharged. A 10/10 choice.

Excellent place for a late summer break
Reviewed on 12/09/2018The location of the property is just as good as the photos show. To see the sea from the house and garden was a real treat and worth the journey down the narrow lane to get there. Excellent location to be based to visit beaches and gardens and of course, the coast path. We hope to return soon.

Such a wonderful experience.
Reviewed on 08/08/2018I cannot recommend Hallane Mill highly enough. The location is private and stunningly beautiful. The attention to detail within the property is second to none. Anything you could possibly need was there. The property is spacious and comfortable and everything is spotlessly clean. This is the best cottage that I have ever stayed at and I have already recommended it to family and friends. Two days out of the week, we didnA?t even leave the property and enjoyed the garden and the beach. You do get the odd walker passing by, but they are few and far between. Apart from that, the property is secluded, allowing you to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings in peace. I would not hesitate to book again.

Reviewed on 06/06/2018What an amazing place. We booked pretty much on the photos but once you are there itA?s on a completely different scale. The house is beautiful and had everything we needed. The work done to renovate the property is very impressive and it really did feel like home. The outside areas are brilliant and the dog loved the fact the beach is on the doorstep. The location for us was perfect. The feeling of being so rural and out the way but your actually within a 10 minute drive you have st Austell, Charlestown or mevagissey. We will definitely return.
