Once a market town St Austell is the central location for visiting the South East of Cornwall. With large attractions such as the Eden Project on the outskirts of St Austell, The Lost Gardens of Heligan a 15 minute drive towards Mevagissey, and Charlestown mere minutes away it provides an ideal base for your travels.

The coastal town of Fowey is a simple 20 minute drive past the China Clay port of Par, offering fabulous restaurants, galleries and gift shops. A short car ferry across the river takes you on to Polruan. Daphne du Maurier spent her later years in properties in and around Fowey, a festival of her works takes place each May.

St Austell was once the major producer of the world's China Clay, now with cheaper foreign imports the industry is in decline but The Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum set in two former working pits depicts the countryside in years gone by. Wet weather activities could include the visitor centre at St Austell Brewery, sampling beers and ales made on the premises. The brewery has recently started exporting their products across the Tamar River to England, so you may just find where your favourite brew is made.

To the North it is only a 20 minute drive to Newquay, These days Newquay's excellent surfing waters are the town's main industry, where as it once used to be a major export port for counties mining efforts as well as a north coast port for pilchard fisheries. Fistral Beach holds many surfing competitions throughout the year, and also hosts Run to the Sun over May Bank holiday, a VW and Custom Car Show. Both the Women's and Men's Gig Championships are held here, as a balloon festival and surf and lifesaving events. Newquay Zoo now houses 130 different species in sub-tropical gardens in the centre of the town.

Watergate Bay and The Extreme Academy offers you a 'ski resort on a beach' and a plethora of activities to keep even the most active occupied. Fifteen Cornwall, founded by Jamie Oliver in 2002 sits on top of the two mile beach at Watergate offering inspirational views for the young chefs and professionals to create fantastic menus from local and seasonal produce. The Lappa Valley Steam Railway just outside Newquay offers both the old and young an interesting day out. Newquay Airport has made the north coast one of the easiest places in Cornwall to get to, with regular flights from various locations across the UK. The town also has an Aquarium, a Waterworld and numerous immensely pretty beaches for the less active. Trerice run by the National Trust is 3 miles outside of the town is an Elizabethan Manor House and Garden with restricted winter opening times.

Some noise from above

Gunnado is a beautiful property and I enjoyed staying there but there are just two things that would have made it better: coat hooks on the back of the bedroom door would be useful; secondly - noise from the accommodation above carried down into the bedroom. This made it difficult to get to sleep as it seemed every time I dropped off, the noise of somebody walking above, or shutting a door for example woke me up. Maybe the floor above would benefit from some better sound insulation.

Just like a home from home

Thoroughly delighted that we chose Gunnado it has everything you need for a home from home.Rob and Cath are great hosts offering any help and advice needed, but not interfering at all. The place is very well appointed, with all modern conveniences and the shower is a real treat. We would thoroughly recommend Gunnado to anybody visiting the area, especially if they have a dog, because ours loved being there.

Lovely place to stay

Stayed for one week with my wife and dog. Location is great if you have a car. Historic harbours are all close by, with dog friendly beaches near as well. Areas like St Ives, Newquay and Falmouth are easily reachable with a short drive. The apartment was a great size for us, with everything in place to make it feel like a home from home. Rob and Cath are excellent hosts and always available with help and local knowledge. I would recommend Gunnado to any couple with or without pet.

We had the perfect stay in this excellent apartment. From the very warm & welcoming greeting from Cath & Rob to the final goodbye. Everything was spotlessly clean and our every need catered for, the owners have thought of everything you could possible need and attention to detail is by far the best we have experienced in anywhere we have stayed. We would not hesitate to recommend this beautiful property to anyone & will definately return ourselves should we need to Cornwall before our move to Carlyon Bay. Thank you so much Cath & Rob you should be very proud of yourselves & your wonderful home.

What we did at Gunnado

Our stay at Gunnado was wonderful. From the moment we stepped out of the car and were greeted by Kath to the moment we had sadly to say goodbye . It is a home from home and no expensense has been spared for our comfort. It is also a great Location for touring the area with Helligan Gardens and the Eden Project on the doorstep. We would certainly like to return
