Situated only a mile away from the village of Mitchell with its lovely 16th Century pub, called the Plume of Feathers in the main street. The pub retains many of its original features and serves locally sourced food either in the restaurant or sit outside in the leafy beer garden on a warm summers day. These days Newquay's excellent surfing waters are the town's main industry, where as it once used to be a major export port for the counties mining efforts as well as a north coast port for pilchard fisheries. Fistral Beach holds many surfing competitions throughout the year, and also hosts Run to the Sun over May Bank holiday, a VW and Custom Car Show. Both the Womens and Mens Gig Championships are held here, as a balloon festival and surf and lifesaving events. Newquay Zoo now houses 130 different species in sub tropical gardens in the centre of the town. Two miles away is The Lappa Valley Steam Railway which, offers both the old and young an interesting day out. Newquay Airport has made the north coast one of the easiest places in Cornwall to get to, with regular flights from various locations across the UK. The town also has an Aquarium, a Waterworld and numerous immensely pretty beaches for the less active. Trerice run by the National Trust is 3 miles outside of the town is an Elizabethan Manor House and Garden with restricted winter opening times.

Just 5.5 miles north west is Holywell Bay, a little village on the North coast between Perranporth and Newquay. It has a beautiful beach with fantastic sand dunes and a little stream for paddling for those daunted by the waves. In the summer months the beach is patrolled by lifeguards and of course, surfing lessons are available for those keen on learning.

Guest from London stayed for 7 nights.

Clean and comfortable. Exactly as described

We rented the Wheel house and Mill house for a family get together over Christmas. The 2 houses adjoin and provided plenty of space for us all. - In fact we could have easily accommodated a few more. The beds were comfortable and the houses were spotless. We had a couple of really minor issues - like a kettle dying on Christmas eve but this was replaced the same day even despite it being Christmas Eve. The owner was really responsive to questions and requests and couldn't have been more helpful. The current owner has been there less than a year and is clearly in the process of updating things as the Wheel house had updated bathrooms whereas the Mill House didn't. However the ones yet to be updated were perfectly functional but not as luxurious. Similarly the kitchens etc were lovely and well fitted out with good pots pans and dishes and lovely sharp knives. All you could need - and we did do a lot of cooking, but cheap microwaves and kettles - an odd mix. I assume that they are being upgraded as and when they need to be replaced. We made good use of the hot tubs which were outside both properties and the games room too. We also used the sauna but sadly it is being removed and we were the last to be able to take advantage of it. Although the properties are billed as having wifi - just a warning they are, but it is a bit hit and miss as it is connected to a mobile dongle so depends on the mobile signal which varies with the weather. Personally I had virtually no mobile connection at the houses - Not that it was a problem as we were a big family group all together anyway - but the teenagers did miss their wifi.-good for them to have a break from it though. On arrival we found a cream tea waiting for us and on Christmas morning we found a sack of presents outside each door - a bottle of mulled wine, dried fruits, nuts and a selection box for everyone. - A nice touch and totally unexpected. Overall the 2 properties were exactly like the pictures, well fitted out and comfortable and warm and I would be happy to stay here again. Many thanks!

Guest from Leicester stayed for 7 nights.

Great place for our large party.

We had a party of 16 including all ages from 1 to 65 and all were really happy with there stay. The owners were most welcoming, helpful, and available. There are plenty of resources, plates, glasses, cutlery, towels, consumables etc. with everything thought of. It's a mile walk to the pub on a country lane. There are no footpaths close to the property so you generally have to drive. It is ideally placed to visit both north and south coast and the nearest beach Holywell Bay is a beautiful visit. We had a problem with a bathroom light not working but had a prompt response from the owner. Some of the bathrooms were a bit dark and would probably benefit from new LED light units. The weather was hot so the heating wasn't on which meant the towel rails weren't on. Some of the bathroom towels felt as if they would have benefitted from a heated rail. Overall great stay.

Fantastic accommodation

Myself and my family (12 adults and 3 children under 2) stayed for a long weekend. The service we received from the owners was outstanding, we had the Mill house and Wheel house including 2 hot tubs. Could not have found a better place to stay. Would highly recommend anyone to book and I would definitely go back.

Perfect base for family holiday in Cornwall

We used 2 of the Goonwinnow cottages as a base for an extended family holiday. It was ideal from a location point of view but also offered loads of activities on site. The hot tubs & games room were particularly popular. We cooked meals for up to 16 & found plenty of pots, pans, etc to do this. 10 out of10 for Goonwinnow.

Very good

Would give 5 star but there were no hygiene things such as toilet rolls and hand wash provided, we have to call owner for those things. They provided 2 rolls for each 4 toilets gor 18 people for 4 days which was not enough...... so i will give 4**** for that reason.

Hits the spot for a special family get together

This was a significant family get together, 12 of us, with ages from 20 months upwards. The layout meant that everyone had a suitable bedroom and being adjoining properties meant we had flexibility of space but all the adults could be together in the evening without disturbing the youngest ones. Great facilities for all the family and a great location with both coasts in easy reach. Special mention goes to Louis the parrot! Owners on site and very friendly and helpful
