Property Details

The views from magical Church Cottage are simply breathtaking! From the lovely little garden in the front of this romantic detached cottage, guests can admire the panorama across fields and clifftops to Widemouth Bay and, on a clear day, Lundy Island. Tucked away in a secret little cluster of cottages beside the ancient church of St Gennys, Church Cottage is quite delightful and will provide a relaxing retreat at any time of year. A path winds down from the parking area past the neighbouring cottages and fields to the little picket fence and enclosed garden where guests can enjoy the fresh air and amazing scenery. The cottage has reversed accommodation with pretty bedrooms downstairs, and the compact open plan living room above. A stable door to the staircase acts as a stair-gate.

The seaside hamlet of Crackington Haven with its pub and friendly cafes is within walking distance down the hill. Nothing can quite compare to staying so close to the coastal path (a 15 minute walk from the cottage) with majestic views made even more spectacular by the height of the cliffs in this part of Cornwall. There is also a footpath just yards from the cottage which takes you on a beautiful 15 minute walk down to the beach at Crackington Haven. If you prefer to drive to the beach, it takes just five minutes. Set in such an unforgettable location, Church Cottage will tempt guests to return time after time. The Owner, who lives nearby, organises nature conservation walks across the dramatic National Trust coastline surrounding the cottage.

Property Location

The cottage is located less than a mile from Crackington Haven, which is included in the best surfing beaches in England and was recommended by the Marine Conservation Society in its Good Beach Guide. The scenery in the beach area of the surrounding majestic cliffs is almost unrivalled. At high tide, the beach is a mass of quartz-veined pebbles and large boulders but at low tide, it reveals an expanse of sand and many rock pools. Only the road separates the sea from a couple of beach shops, two superb beach cafes and a public house with a restaurant and fantastic terrace. The cottage is located in the parish of St. Gennys, which prides itself on the excellence of its public paths with the National Trust owning most of the cliff and adjacent farmland.

As you travel down the coastline, you can visit quaint coastal villages such as Boscastle, Tintagel and Port Isaac, the latter offering a range of fantastic restaurants where you can enjoy the freshest and most delicious fish.

Twenty minutes up the coast is Bude, a popular tourist destination for both its surfing and fantastic family beaches in Widemouth Bay. The watchful eye of the RNLI lifeguards allows for some of the best surfing in the world alongside swimming and a whole host of water-based activities. Bude today is a lovely sea-side town, the main shopping streets and inter-connecting alleyways play host to a wide range of locally owned shops, restaurants and pubs. There are boutiques, shoes, arts & crafts, jewellery, hand-made gifts and souvenirs.

Six miles inland is Bodmin Moor, one of Cornwall's designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Cornwall at its wildest and rich in ancient history, Bodmin Moor stretches for 30 miles through the heart of the County of Cornwall and offers spectacular walking and horse riding. With easy access to the both the A30 and the Atlantic Highway you can quickly travel up and down the South-West to enjoy some of the larger tourist attractions that Devon and Cornwall have to offer.

The kitchen and cooker was very easy to use lots of utensils dishes etc . The only problem was the noise the heating made . The bedding and cottage was clean but some sticky sweets ' WeA?re under the bed !! The hot water was a bit slow in the bathroom but was hot and very soft water worth waiting for .! ItA?s a nice convenient place to stay close to lots of sea side places to visit.

Lovely little cottage. Very quiet little cluster of cottages. Quite remote but nice walk into crackington haven over the coast path. Cosy cottage, just big enough for a family of 4. We even had our own horse in the field next door and a visiting rabbit. Francis was very helpful and welcoming. All in all a quiet relaxing holiday

Church Cottage is a gorgeous little cottage tucked away from the main tourist spots. We found the cottage clean and well presented and we absolutely loved the views. It is tiny but is well equipped with everything youA?d need on a holiday. The kids enjoyed the local beach and us adults liked the local pub and the cider farm! Francis (host) was on hand when we arrived and ensured that everything was in place throughout our stay. We would definitely return.

A lovely relaxing stay.
Reviewed on 22/07/2021

Having worked throughout the pandemic, we were in sore need of a proper break, and wanted somewhere quiet, peaceful, away from the crowds and near the sea. Church Cottage easily fulfilled all these criteria. The view out to sea shown on the website really does not do it justice - it is so much better and we spent a lot of time just staring out to sea! The cottage is minutes from the coastal path and the general location is excellent for exploring along the coast, both east and west by car. This is an area with some absolutely stunning scenery. The cottage is an old building so allowances must be made, but this is part of its charm, but the kitchen was well equipped, the beds were very comfy and there was always plenty of hot water. I think it might be a little tight on space in the living area for 4, but for 2, its ideal. The owner was very pleasant and helpful but not intrusive. Crackington Haven itself is a small but popular stony beach, very swimable at low tide, and the Coombe Barton Inn does an excellent Sunday lunch. Overall we really enjoyed our fortnight stay (despite the changeable weather) and would recommend this as a great place to live simply and get away from it all.

This was our second stay in Church Cottage. It's so nice to be able to walk out of the front door, cross a couple of fields, and be on the coast path along the cliff tops. The cottage is compact but well supplied with kitchen equipment, and has board games, DVDs, books and jigsaws in case of bad weather. There is Wi-Fi and mobile phone reception for some networks. The bedrooms are downstairs, and the beds are very comfortable. If you don't fancy cooking, there is good pub food a short drive away, though sadly the Trevigue restaurant wasn't open this summer (2018).

Perfect for walking the South West Coast path and access to nearby Bude, Boscastle and Tintagel. Crackington Haven beach is also lovely and can be reached via the cliff path. Church Cottage is amongst group of around 6 other cottages, but has private garden and is not overlooked and you have views over the fields and church spires to the cliffs and sea. Francis was very attentive and even brought a BBQ over! Only negative (perhaps a positive for some...) is that the Wifi signal is patchy). We had a great week at Church Cottage

A Lovely little place to stay with Crackington Haven just a short distance away. The friendly owner was there to meet us, and was more than happy to help if we were to have any problems. The lounge / kitchen is well laid out with comfy furniture and everything you need if you are planing to cook your own meals. The lounge leads out to the garden area, it has a very good view of the coast and out to sea, where on a good day you can sea Lundy Island. The bathroom is exceptionally special, as all four of it's walls have been hand painted to look like the sea, complete with little yachts and crashing waves! The bedrooms are downstairs so are nice and cool if you have to sleep on a hot night. There is plenty to see and do in the area, one of the best attractions we visited was the Tamar Otter and Wildlife Sanctuary. If you enjoy walking then the coastal path is just a few yards away, I took a short walk with my camera and got some great shots of the stunning landscape! We would definitely stay here again, and would recommend it to others!

Nice but not quite as good as we had hoped
Reviewed on 23/09/2017

The cottage is charming and the views are amazing. It is let down however by a poor heating system and the bedrooms (downstairs) are a bit dark and damp. The bed in the main bedroom is small and linen not high quality. Having said all of that we ejoyed staying at the cottage and exploring the surrounding areas. The walks are many and scenic and the pub at Crackington Haven is very pleasant. For the price charged however we were expecting a slightly higher standard.

Francis Crocker replied:
Many thanks for submitting your review; all points "have been taken on board". I am glad that you enjoyed your stay. It is true that the double bed is a 4 foot 6 inch bed, but due to the layout of the 200 year old barn conversion it it the largest size bed that can sensibly fit into the room. I trust that you slept well on the high quality pocket sprung mattresses. Since your comment on the lack of heating, I have had a plumber/electrician make sure that the thermostats and radiators are working efficiently so the bedrooms are warm and comfortable. I would also like to add that before the arrival of new guests the cottage is thoroughly cleaned by 2 cleaners, and then inspected by myself to ensure that it is spotless. The cottage is exactly the same as in the pictures on the website.
