Nestled between St Austell and Carlyon Bay, Charlestown is a picturesque, historical fishing port on the South East coast of Cornwall. Having largely resisted the modernisation and commercialisation of some other popular destinations, Charlestown has held onto it’s unique, quintessential Cornish charm. For this reason, it has been a popular backdrop to a number of film and television projects, including Poldark, Dr Who and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
Steeped in history, no visit would be complete without a trip to the Charlestown shipwreck and Heritage centre, which exhibits a fascinating array of artefacts, stories and information about the village and it’s maritime history. Aside from the museum, Charlestown also has a couple of art galleries, a harbourside pub boasting excellent views, a small sandy beach and a number of small shops to browse your way through.
Once a year the village holds it’s annual Regatta; a weeklong event featuring watersports, games, sports competitions and a carnival, all to raise money for the village. With plenty to while away a very pleasant day, Charlestown is well worth a visit.
