Caerhays Estate comprises of Caerhays Castle and Gardens. The Estate is owned by the Williams family and is positioned in a sheltered valley over looking Porthluney Cove between St Austell and Truro. The surrounding parkland and 120 acre woodland gardens were established by the discoveries of the plant hunters in China just after the turn of the 20th century. Since then an extensive amount of hybridisation work has taken place, creating the extensive woodland gardens which visitors can enjoy today. The gardens are at their most spectacular between March, April and May and the Castle, which is a private home, is open to the public for limited times.
The gardens are home to a National Magnolia Collection and are English Heritage Grade II Listed. They are open to the public from February to the beginning of June. Guided tours from the Head Gardener can be booked which give an in-depth view into the gardens.
Porthluney Beach is directly in front of the castle. There is a ban on speed boats and motorised vessels so it is perfectly tranquil and peaceful, safe for swimming and children.
