Polgooth or Pollgoedh in Cornish actually meaning 'Goose Pond' is a former mining village in south Cornwall. The nearest town is St Austell which is two miles (3.5 km) to the north-east. By the eighteenth century Polgooth was celebrated as the 'greatest tin mine in the world' and the richest mine in the United Kingdom. The village of Polgooth grew up amongst the mines. Many of the older buildings in the village today were built from elvan stone, quarried locally until the 1920s. The Polgooth Inn dates back to the sixteenth century and is still extant, though the present building is mainly nineteenth century.

Once a market town St Austell is the central location for visiting the South East of Cornwall. With large attractions such as the Eden Project on the outskirts of St Austell, The Lost Gardens of Heligan a 15 minute drive towards Mevagissey, and Charlestown mere minutes away it provides an ideal base for your travels. The coastal town of Fowey is a simple 20 minutes drive past the China Clay port of Par, offering fabulous restaurants, galleries and gift shops. A short car ferry across the river takes you on to Polruan. Daphne du Maurier spent her later years in properties in and around Fowey, a festival of her works takes place each May.

St Austell was once the major producer of the worlds China Clay, now with cheaper foreign imports the industry is in decline but The Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum, set in two former working pits, depicts the countryside in years gone by. Wet weather activities could include the visitor centre at St Austell Brewery, sampling beers and ales made on the premises. The brewery has recently started exporting their products across the Tamar River to England, so you may just find where your favourite brew is made.

Great base for exploring

We chose the location to be close to the Eden Project, but it was also a good base to explore other areas too. The beach recommendations in the cottage were very helpful, and being within walking distance of a nice pub with good food was a big bonus. The cottage was a good size for the five of us, and we particularly appreciated the shop next door, which was like having a very well-stocked reasonably priced mini-bar!

Holiday at Yet Gwynn-Polgooth Cornwall

The cottage was lovely very well equipped clean and comfortable. The only things we thought could do with improving was the outside needed a coat of paint and the pillows and mattress were a little uncomfortable(a bit hard for us). The village shop next door is well stocked with reasonable prices and friendly staff. It's in a great location to explore all of cornwall. And after a long day out nice to come back to a cosy comfortable cottage to relax for the evening. The village pub The Polgooth Inn is a short stroll and does great food. We really had a wonderful holiday and would love to return to the cottage.

We are pleased you liked our cottage Yet Gwynn and that you had a wonderful holiday. Sorry that you found the beds a little hard - this is a tricky one to solve as everyone has different requirements. Anyway it is nice to hear that you hope to return one day and thanks for this lovely review.

Yet Gwyn Cornish Cottage - Polgooth

Yet Gwyn is an advertised cottage sleeping 6 in 3 bedrooms with outside courtyard and parking. All of the statements are true however my mother and I stayed using 2 of the 3 bedrooms - my own double bedroom had such a sloping ceiling that I had to use the wardrobe in the 3rd bedroom to store my clothes therefore this room is not really suitable for a couple at all. The cottage is in a quaint friendly village and the shop is actually right next door which was handy but I had envisaged that the outside space would not be at the roadside with passing traffic and the public - no privacy at all and certainly not big enough for children. Parking is directly on the road opposite so again handy but a large vehicle would struggle and stick out considerably into a very narrow road. All this sounds very critical but it is honest. Good features are the downstairs accommodation and decor throughout. The village location is excellent for north/south as well as east west access to the county. We did enjoy the stay and the price was acceptable for the amenities.

Reply from Teri

Thanks for your feedback. In light of your's and other guest's comments regarding bedroom/wardrobe space we are now considering marketing the cottage for a maximum of 4 persons. We do hope the issues you have raised did not spoil your stay in our lovely cottage and your time in Cornwall.

A lovely comfortable and welcoming space

We had a smashing week at Yet Gwynn. The cottage was very welcoming, comfortable and had all the amenities you could ask for and more. A super location and close to the two amazing attractions of the Lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden Project. We travelled out every day visiting Mevagissy, St Michaels Mount, Lands End, Sennen Cove, Tintagel and Padstow. Nothing is more than about 45 mins to an hour away and the weather was superb! I would highly recommend the Polgooth Inn which was a hop skip and jump away from the cottage and had fab food. Ate there 3 or 4 times during out stay.

Good Winter Cottage

Quirky quaint cottage but be aware mind your head ....... numerous low beams. Cottage has real character was well equipped for self catering and a beautiful fire pl;ace to feel at home. In the winter the closeness of the road and the village stores is not a problem BUT we had our bedroom windows open one night and the noises off woke us up. Polgooth Inn was really close and value for money. The village store staff were very helpful and the "Open All Hours" policy and great range of stock was a real benefit.

Reply from Teri (cottage owner)

Initially I was happy reading your review as it sounded as if you had a good time and enjoyed staying in our cottage, however I was disappointed to see the scoring you gave us, as we work hard and strive for at least 4/5, ideally 5/5 across all categories. I realise location is a very personal preference, and yes if you were woken by noises then I can understand a lowish score for location, however I am a little surprised that you felt that the overall value was not good @ £22 per person, per night and would welcome your suggestions as to how we could improve the value aspect for future guests.

Guest from Morecambe stayed for 7 nights.

Generally comfortable, and the location good.

As an pensioner (83)there were certain aspects that did not make the stay perfect. the most important being the access to the bedrooms and toilets, they were on the first floor, and there were no handrails on the stairs, and not being steady I had to be very careful. In the shower room, the step out of the shower could be said to be diffcult especially if one was not agile, the step was about 8-10 inches high, and with wet feet, quite slippery. The addition of an occasional table in the lounge would be helpful for taking tea as there is nowhere to stand cups etc.

Reply from Teri

I was really sorry to hear that the cottage was not ideal for you and I quite understand the difficulties you probably had with no handrails on the stairs, etc. However, within our cottage description we do try to give enough information so guests can make an informed decision whether or not the cottage will meet their requirements and it clearly states that the bedrooms and toilets are on the first floor. The staff at Cornwalls Cottages are familiar with all the cottages they advertise so may I suggest that if you do book through them again in the future, have a chat with them before booking to ensure your next stay is more comfortable for you.

generally enjoyable stay in a well presented property

the property was generally very well presented and the location worked very well for us. the only issue to raise is that the property has a significant damp/mould smell from the sitting room, which was very noticeable each time we came back into the property or when we came downstairs in the morning. the carpet behind the sofa is clearly showing signs of damp, all along the wall; there may also be an issue around the front door. it's a shame because the property has been nicely renovated. it didn't detract too much from our stay, but is something that should be looked at as it will only get worse.

Reply from Teri

Thank you for bringing to our attention the damp smell in the sitting room. Over last winter we did experience some damp problems which have taken an age to dry out. We have recently repaired and repainted some affected areas upstairs and plan to do some more repair work, including downstairs, during the quieter winter months. We also realise that we need to replace the sitting room carpet. We apologise for any inconvenience this caused you, but are pleased to hear that overall it did not spoil your stay.

wonderful holiday

We had a wonderful holiday, the cottage was lovely I thought it may seem cramped but it was fine, headroom is a bit restricted especially in the middle bedroom in which it would help to be about 3 feet tall! but it added to the quirkiness and seemed really cosy, also there is no phone signal or 4g available inside, but it was still super

Family break visiting friends

Family of 4 visiting friends in Polgooth village so this was an excellent location for us. Kids loved the bunk beds, tall husband didn't make friends with the low ceiling beams but I thought they were lovely. Would've liked some flexibility on change over day so we could've stayed Friday night as well but not a deal breaker. Also would've been good to have a little longer to get out on the day of leaving. I personally think 10am is a little early especially if you have a long drive ahead with kids. Overall a very pleasant stay and no doubt we'll be back.

With regard to your comment about our changeover day and departure time - outside of peak holiday times and dependant on other bookings we are happy to be flexible on these, so please do check with us and if we can we will try and fit in with your requirements. Once again, many thanks.

A happy holiday

Very comfortable cottage. Well appointed. Good location. No garden, just a tiny terrace, very public. Very low ceilings. No internet and limited 'phone signal. Perfect for me but not so good for 'Hubby'.

Reply from Teri

Reading your comments in our visitor's book it was nice to see you enjoyed your stay at our lovely cottage Yet Gwynn. Phone signal does seem to be limited in the cottage, however much of Cornwall's phone signal is a bit 'hiss & miss - anyway hopefully that, along with no Wifi at the cottage, didn't cause hubby too much distress!

This is a very tastefully decorated cottage, although modernised, kept in keeping with the cottage. A lovely touch from the owners was the fresh milk left, along with biscuits, tea and coffee etc., Also, the most comprehensive listings of how to use the various pieces of equipment I have come across. I highly recommend the cottage, and also the wonderful shop, so well stocked with everything that is needed for a short break, along with hot pasties!

Easter break.

Was in a fantastic location, was quite central for all our needs, lots too do & see. Spent a little bit of time in the local pub. The polgooth inn. Staff friendly & nothing too much trouble for them. Also benefits from being next door to the village store, the parking space was a little tight for the people carrier we had. But that is a minor fault, everything else was great, local asdas, tesco not too far away either all within 5 mins of the cottage. Would stay again most prob will. Still got lots to go back & see. All in all fab place in good location.
