The delightful and charming village of Veryan on the Roseland Peninsula is most famous for its nineteenth century thatched Round Houses. There are five in all, two pairs of which stand at each end of the village and another in the centre. They were originally built by a missionary named Reverend Jeremiah Trist for his daughters. In a round house there are no corners where the devil can hide. A crucifix on the top of each one adds extra protection! 

The village has a lovely 16th century Inn and a shop operating as a grocer, post office and off license meaning you never need to get in your car. Nearby the sandy beaches of Carne and Pendower offer a fabulous starting point for a nice long walk along the cliffs to either Nare Head or Portscatho and Rosevine. Mellinsey Mill inland is a great little hideaway for a cream tea. Just down the road is Portloe a focal point for smuggling in years not so far gone by, it is reported during the 19th Century the inn landlord was hanged for bringing in french brandy and hiding it in his cellars.
