The Roseland Peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and forms one of the finest sections of Cornwall's South Coast. From Mevagissey to St Mawes and bordered by the Fal Estuary to the west, the Roseland Peninsula has been drawing visitors for years with its splendid coastline, unique gardens, historic villages and superb sailing waters. A truly magnificent part of Cornwall, the Roseland Peninsula is a wonderful place to spend a memorable holiday. With The Lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden Project in one direction and Falmouth and the National Maritime Museum in the other the Roseland is brimming with places to visit and things to do.

The delightful and charming village of Veryan on the Roseland Peninsula is most famous for its nineteenth century thatched Round Houses. There are five in all, two pairs of which stand at each end of the village and another in the centre. They were originally built by a missionary named Reverend Jeremiah Trist for his daughters. In a round house there are no corners where the devil can hide. A crucifix on the top of each one adds extra protection! Portloe is considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of the Roseland peninsula and one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Its steep sided valleys has meant that it has managed to escape development over the years and many buildings differ little from when they were built. Sir John Betjeman said of Portloe "One of the least spoiled and most impressive of Cornish fishing villages". Nearby is the lovingly restored Melinsey Mill where you can relax in a charming valley with a delicious Cornish cream tea.

St Mawes Castle, built by Henry VIII in the 16th century sits on Castle Point at the mouth of the River Fal. At the top of St Mawes, Lamorran Gardens house a wonderful collection of tropical plants with lovely views down into the Harbour. St Just-in-Roseland has arguably the most photographed church in Cornwall. The 13th century church sits quietly tucked away on the edge of the creek. The Veryan Roundhouses are a must see, on the way to Nare Head, where you will find the most spectacular views of Gerrans Bay. The little village of Portloe nestles in lovely valley and is one of Cornwall's quintessential spots. Portscatho has a number of art galleries and many artists find the light in this harbour village inspires much of their work. The Roseland Inn at Philleigh is a 16th century pub just waiting for you to visit, as is the newly refurbished Smugglers Cottage at Tolverne, perfect for that afternoon Cornish Cream Tea, now run by Tregothnan Estate home to the UK's first tea plantation. The most popular thing to do though on the Roseland is simply to walk and enjoy some of Cornwall's most beautiful coastline.

Events on the Roseland reach fever point in August when sailing regattas, carnivals, fayres and fun days take place all over the Roseland and the waters of the Carrick Roads. It is a memorable place for many people who return year after year to enjoy the magic of this beautiful place.

Portscatho and its neighbouring village of Gerrans are located on the eastern coast of the Roseland Peninsula, overlooking the dramatic Gerrans Bay. A truly peaceful waterside village, Portscatho is a lovely place for a holiday. There are miles of coastal and countryside footpaths to explore, particularly along past Towan beach and out to St Anthony's Head. Portscatho was once a busy fishing harbour, but now it has become a haven for artists due to the striking light which is particularly good in the morning sun. More than anything, Portscatho is a place to relax.

There are some stunning beaches around Gerrans Bay from Carne and Pendower in the east stretching round through Porthcurnick (Rosevine) and on to Towan and Porthbeor at the west, they are nearly all very accessible and have plenty of exposed sand at low tide and magical rock pools which can keep children engaged for hours! Most importantly compared to the hustle and bustle of the north coast they are comparatively empty!
