Looe is a very popular fishing village in South East Cornwall, split by the River Looe into East & West Looe. East Looe is a little busier with the harbour, fish quays and main shopping centre. West Looe is joined by a very pretty seven arched bridge and is quieter but still has a few shops and restaurants. From Hannafore Beach in West Looe you can view the banjo pier as well as Looe Island, which is open to day visitors during the summer. The railway line servicing the fish quays still runs and is a great way to enter the village from Liskeard.
Polperro is just south of Looe and is a much smaller fishing port with many of the streets impassable to vehicles. As with many of the smaller ports on the south coast, their heritage is in smuggling and a museum in the village depicts this. Pilchards were the main source of legitimate income for the village, as well as boat building and at high tide fishing boats still work from the harbour. Talland Bay, situated between Looe & Polperro, has been made popular by Richard & Judy Madeley on TV.

We had a pleasant week in May at The Sett. The cottage is clean and a good size for a couple. It is well equipped and has the bonus of a dishwasher. It has a sitting area with 2 chairs and a picnic bench outside the backdoor which gets the afternoon and evening sunshine and has open views of farmland and woods. The owners live close by and are on hand if you have any problems. It is only a few miles drive from the coast to the south and Liskeard to the north, which has a Morrisons for food and fuel.

Cottage lovely and peaceful has every thing you would need and more, No local facilities in walking distance had to use car for everything draw back being very narrow lanes as access from main road which are not for faint hearted in dark , when on road only few minutes to Duloe and Looe. Weather very kind to us was relaxing week no stress. Dog lovers would enjoy woods adjacent to property real get away from it property. Would recommend property but had issues with location and access to it.

The Sett may be a little out of the way, but that is exactly what we were looking for. Excellent hosts and splendid, very quiet surroundings. An excellent bed, too. The cottage is very well equipped. And our main aim, the South West Coast Path, is only a short trip away. Nearby villages offer good opportunities for shopping and dining. We truly enjoyed our stay. Thank you, Martin and Wendy!

We had a fantastic week at The Sett. The cottage itself was beautifully presented and really offered a home from home experience. Set in gorgeous rolling cornish countryside in what felt like the middle of nowhere. We could not fault this as a relaxing retreat.

lovely holiday cottage. everything on hand to use. bed very comfortable. lovely views. owners lovely helpful people. would visit the sett again. easy to reach destinations of places of interest. lovely walks for our dog. one suggestion i made to Martin was a handrail outside back door as it has 2 steep steps and my wife struggled a little. Martin said it was a good idea and will get his son to put one up. we enjoyed our stay very much

Property cute and well presented as mentioned in previous reviews does smell a little damp and there is some damp around toilet window but given location it's not supprizing and a little extra care with cleaning would resolve this and the abundance of cobwebs But was cozy and warm and the owner very welcoming and accommodating A little cut off and a fair drive to beach but seaton beach lovely with great cafe and amenities for families and children alike and dog friendly Talland bay a great recommendation by the owner and had a great meal at the the local Dogs welcome on that beach but only on leads Dog friendly accommodation and with that in mind no unpleasant doggy wiffs but definitely a damp smell especially in the bedroom Overall a nice get away could only be improved on by the weather and the lack of wiffy smells

The cottage itself was situated a little off the beaten track for us but it was a lovely lovely setting. The cottage was larger than we expected and had all of the facilities you would expect. The kitchen was well equipped with appliances and utensils. Would stay here again.

The narrow country lanes could be daunting but are a necessity when you want to stay somewhere so remote and peaceful. Approach from the valley, via Duloe, and you you soon feel you have left the motorways far behind, although it was always slightly worrying when the possibility of meeting another vehicle would mean someone would have an awkward reverse to negotiate. Actually we never did - only a handful of vehicles need to use these lanes and we soon gained in confidence. We didn't even get lost! The Sett was probably the best equipped cottage we'd ever stayed in and cosy too, as the log burner was already going for us on arrival. It proved fairly easy to master, and the very helpful owners are on hand to help with any problems. Logs, firelighters etc. are supplied. Considering that the place is dog friendly there was no evidence of their visits apparent. The open country views from the back of the property are worth the trip alone, and far enough away from big towns to give good conditions for stargazing, if so inclined. We were probably a little further from Looe than I had expected, and the lanes do slow you down, but that's all part of the charm. There are lots of lovely walks close at hand, but it is also convenient for visiting Fowey, Polperro (leave the car behind) and interesting inland places like Truro and Bodmin.

Just what we needed, a dog friendly place to relax in the quiet of the countryside. Comfortable and cosy and being lucky with the weather at the end of November we used the cottage as a base to explore Cornwall.
Guest from Llandysul stayed for 7 nights.
The owners were friendly, charming, most helpful and keen to ensure that we enjoyed our stay in their cottage. I should probably start by mentioning that on first entering the cottage both my partner and I were initially a little bit disappointed, as the cottage itself, is smaller in reality than the photos suggest online .... but having said that, we soon got used to it and in the end it was absolutely fine for the two of us and our dog! Somebody has just used a bit of photographic artistic licence! It was warm, clean and comfortable and has a lovely view from the lounge. The bedroom is charming .... My only slight criticism would be that it's a little dark and could probably benefit from a larger window looking out towards the back (so you could better enjoy the fabulous panoramic view from the bed). But that is a very minor gripe. The kitchen was compact but had all the equipment we needed ... Including a washing machine and dishwasher. The log burner in the lounge was very efficient and kept the cottage nice and toastie. Martin the owner kept us supplied with plenty of logs and firelighters. For dog walkers, there is a safe, unused "road" that runs just beyond a gate about 15yards from the cottage. Very handy. There are loads of pretty places to explore not too far away .... Including the Eden Project ... Which is well worth a visit. But do your homework and book tickets in advance online to get a discount. NB no WiFi at cottage. Nearby eating places include The Jubilee Inn at Pelynt, which is dog friendly has nice food, friendly staff and The Plough at Duloe also has nice food ... but is currently in administration ... So changes are probably imminent. The bottom line ... Would we go back to the cottage? Without a doubt.

We stayed at the Sett for 2 weeks and had a very relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable holiday. Martin and Wendy were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The property was very comfortable with everything provided that you could need for a holiday. The furniture and kitchen goods were of a good quality and there was plenty of room to move around. The views from the windows are amazing and although we used it as a base to visit other parts of Cornwall it was also lovely to just sit in the garden and relax. It is so quiet. We love rural properties but for anyone who isn't used to the rural areas of Cornwall - the roads can be quite narrow but there are plenty of passing places, you don't meet much traffic and everyone we met was very obliging. The holiday was over all too soon but we'd definitely visit again in the future.

The Sett is a lovely peaceful cottage in the middle of beautiful countryside. The cottage is fully equipped, comfortable and a good base to explore all of Cornwall. We especially enjoyed looking at the spectacular views that surrounded the garden. Our two dogs were made very welcome and they enjoyed the freedom of the outside space. We were made very welcome on our arrival and fully enjoyed our stay in Cornwall.

The cottage was more rural than we were expecting however the views and the quiet were wonderful. The bed was extremely comfy however, larger towels and tea towels would have been a bonus. Cottage was clean but quite a few cobwebs around.

The Sett is in a very remote location set in beautiful Cornish farmland and nearby woodland. The access roads are very narrow, so if you value the paintwork on the sides of your car you may want to reconsider your location. This is one of the quietest places I have ever stayed and the owners are very friendly. However, the property interior, although comfortable, is not particularly clean in some areas and has a very musty smell but this is something which could easily be addressed and rectified. On the whole a lovely place to stay.
We are disappointed that that you did not raise your concerns to us whilst you were here, we would of course have endeavoured to rectify any problems immediately. We are however pleased that you enjoyed your holiday and is happy that The Sett is " a lovely place to stay".
Location: Looe and Polperro
