Looe is a very popular fishing village in South East Cornwall, split by the River Looe into East & West Looe. East Looe is a little busier with the harbour, fish quays and main shopping centre. West Looe is joined by a very pretty seven arched bridge and is quieter but still has a few shops and restaurants. From Hannafore Beach in West Looe you can view the banjo pier as well as Looe Island, which is open to day visitors during the summer. The railway line servicing the fish quays still runs and is a great way to enter the village from Liskeard.
Polperro is just south of Looe and is a much smaller fishing port with many of the streets impassable to vehicles. As with many of the smaller ports on the south coast, their heritage is in smuggling and a museum in the village depicts this. Pilchards were the main source of legitimate income for the village, as well as boat building and at high tide fishing boats still work from the harbour. Talland Bay, situated between Looe & Polperro, has been made popular by Richard & Judy Madeley on TV.

The Den was hidden away at the end of a narrow cornish lane. A COSY hideawaywith a lovely wood burning stove, perfect for winter evenings. No traffic noise, just birds singing:) Very conveniently located for visiting friends at Looe. The Den was well equipped and the bed was very comfortable.

We have stayed here before an will be back. The owners are lovely and welcoming. The wood burner is such a lovely feature on a damp or cold evening. It is a perfect place to get away from it all.

Location was beautiful but on the downside lanes were very small. It is quite close to the seaside and tourist attractions. We had a lovely week and weather was good. Ideal for a quiet leisurely holiday.

This is a lovely cottage in very peaceful surroundings. Wendy was there to greet us after our long journey there. She was very welcoming and showed us around. It is a bit off the beaten track but once there it is in a very tranquil place. Our two dogs loved it and easy access to open spaces for them. We had a great time too. We would highly recommend the property. Had a very relaxing time.

The property was very comfortable and had everything we needed for a quiet, peaceful and relaxing stay, with help on hand if needed. It was a fairly remote property but very dog friendly with extensive woods nearby. We booked our stay with our dog in mind, however, he died two weeks before our holiday. We were touched when the owner arranged a refund for our pet on our behalf, which was reimbursed on our return by the agents. Very thoughtful and unexpected. Thank You.

This small cottage is down a series of winding country lanes, which is what we wanted to get right away from it all. There is ample parking. The owner met us at the agreed time and was welcoming, friendly and pleasant, showing us how everything worked. The cottage has all the usual amenities. I think it may have been out of use for a few weeks because the first evening was chilly, but we soon figured out how to keep the wood-burner going, while the storage heaters kept the bedroom toasty! We spent a nice week there. The nearest shops are some way away, so I would stock up on food before you arrive.

Excellent position if you like to walk with or without a dog, access from the cottage to the Forestry land at the rear and other sites a short distance by car. not suitable if you have any disability a lot of the walks have at least some fairly steep parts. Easy access to Looe. May well return in the future.

Lovely cottage. Bed and bedding was very good, clean and good quality. Towels very nice .owners lovely and welcoming. Roads very narrow driving from Duloe into farm but you get used to it. Rural and cosy. Great wood burning fire.

There's no doubting the Den is a great location, only 3 miles to Looe and 7 to Polperro. Woodland walks on the doorstep and views of rolling fields. We wouldn't fault it on its peaceful location. The owners Wendy and Martin are just a few yards away if you need them but leave you to your own devices which is nice. The bedroom is lovely and big but cosy too - Martin had lit the log burner in the lounge for our arrival which was very thoughtful and appreciated (we arrived after 8.30pm). Those with anti-social dogs should note that there's no division from the cottage next door garden-wise which for us was a problem as next door had a dog too - if you have social dog(s) then not a problem. Also worth taking note that 'the sharp right turn' mentioned in the directions is Tremadart Lane... Not sure why that wasn't given in the directions... The lane is directly opposite the community shop (again in the directions a post office is mentioned as a landmark but it closed years ago by all accounts and there's no sign to say it ever was a PO so was a bit confusing). Remember to take provisions - milk and teabags are a must for when you arrive! Overall a great base from which to explore and relax.

A great property, well maintained. Only a few miles from the coast and popular tourist destinations, The Den is located in a secluded rural spot with access to walking routes straight from your door. Great for us and our young dog. If you want to visit Cornwall but need somewhere to get away from it all, this might be the place for you. Be aware that access routes are single track, and hence narrow, they can be steep and unlit at night.

We had a lovely time, the only problem we had was that nowhere was within walking distance and therefore had to either drive or get a taxi. My fault for not doing enough research I suppose.

Lovely cottage, quiet location but just a short drive from Looe. Great for a couple looking for a relaxing break, everything we needed was provided & we had a great time.

Written by Mark P, August 2015: This review is for a week's stay in late July - cottage is in a very secluded spot overlooking a beautiful valley, in the Cornwall countryside around 15mins drive inland from the coast. The property itself was perfect for us both and our pet dog - cottage was spotless on arrival, with all mod cons in working order . Little or no mobile signal and certainly no Wifi, though if that isn't a blessing for you then best stick to city breaks! 'Landlord' Martin was genial to a fault as well as discreet, and so the welcome and greetings throughout were appreciated. Great countryside to walk in every direction, with two small towns a 5-10min drive to, with loose a little further away. As for eating out locally, we twice enjoyed dinner in the Plough inn in nearby Duloe - imaginitive, varied menu and very personable staff. Would hesitate to recommend alternative local option (Jubilee Inn in Pelynt) as we gave up waiting for service on the occasion we visited the place, where a generally tense atmosphere lingered in the place while we did hang around. Maybe they were having a bad day, but it didn't augur well for the food. Simply put, a gorgeous part of the country, peace and privacy, lovely country air - all in a comfortable and well-attended setting. And on a personal note, is was the place where my partner became my fiancee', so thank you for providing me with the setting for one of the happiest few days of my life so far.

Nestled in a beautiful location the den proved to be the absolute perfect place to unwind. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for a week of total peace and quiet yet with Polperro and Looe only a short drive away.

On arrival at the Den , we were greeted by the owner Martin. He was very helpful making us feel at ease. The cottage was perfect for us , quite clean and cosy, lovely large bedroom. the kitchen was spotless and the cosy lounge had a wonderful log burner (with plentiful supply of logs!) The view from the cottage were amazing! Green fields, trees and the birds were in abundance. This is the perfect place for total relaxation and peace.

Set in stunning countryside, The Den is tucked away in a tranquil location but close to the stunning South Cornish coast and market towns. The accommodation is in an old barn which has been converted a to high standard. The "cottage" contains all the space and facilities a couple need for a comfortable stay and the wood burning stove makes for cosy and warm nights! The owners are on site and are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

I took my 2 dogs for our first ever 'holiday' together with some trepidation (having dogs in someone else's house...) but we all had a wonderful time. My main concern was wet muddy dogs on the good quality (new?) carpets. I solved this by using the dog cage from the car as a 'gate' between the kitchen area and sitting room-worked a treat! Fantastic location if you want to get away from it all. But not too far to travel if you want shops, sights, Coast path... and off the lead dog walking on the doorstep. Dog paddling/swimming just10 mins down the track in the wooded valley with lovely walks all around. I took an OS map so I could venture further from main paths and do circular walks. A very friendly welcome and farewell by the owners. The accommodation was really homely and well equipped with good quality furniture and appliances and plenty of logs for the log burner - very cosy. I certainly hope to return and have already recommended to friends and family.

We had a wonderful time at The Den, finding it sparklingly clean and well-maintained with the comfiest bed we'd ever slept in! A beautiful part of the world to stay in, within easy reach of so many lovely spots. Kind, helpful owners helped make this an extra special stay.

Our stay the Den was outstanding! The only let down was the weather that no one could help! We stayed at the Den the last week of August for our Honeymoon! We didn't arrive until 2am but Martin and Wendy had been into the cottage, left a light on and left us wine, chocolate and a basket full of wood for the fire! As we arrived so late we quickly unpacked and went straight to sleep, the bed was so comfortable and the bedding was clean and fresh and a delight to fall into after a 6 hour drive! When we woke up later that morning the views took our breath away! Amazing! The cottage had everything we needed, all kitchen equipment was provided, fluffy clean towels, log burner essentials, iron hoover and even plastic tubs so you can take out a picnic! We met both Martin and Wendy who are amazing people! They will cater to your every need and have a very good knowledge of the surrounding area! We took our dog with us too who loved every moment, our dog Max is great off the lead so didn't venture off into any of the vast fields! Martin and Wendy have dogs too so are very accommodating. We ate out at the Plough in Duloe, the food was very very yummy and a very reasonable price! They also allow dogs which is great! Definitely worth a visit! Over all we had a really great time and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Den, we would return in a heart beat!! Thankyou Martin and Wendy!

Beautiful secluded location amidst the gorgeous Cornish countryside and yet only a few miles from the coast. Ideal retreat away from everyday stresses - with no wifi and the poor telephone signal that is expected in these quieter corners of Cornwall being an absolute BONUS. The property was delightful - more spacious inside than expected, with all our needs catered for. Narrow roads a little scary at first, but you soon get used to them and the directions supplied are rather misleading as you cannot see any Post Office signage from the road - better to state 'turning is opposite Duloe Community Stores'. However the gorgeous unspoilt views over the valley at the rear of the property makes this an ideal spot to stay and unwind after a long day exploring this unspoilt area of Cornwall - would highly recommend.
Location: Looe and Polperro
