Pentewan (just north of Mevagissey) has an industrial past that is still evident in the village today. It was once a busy harbour built by a local mine owner for shipping china clay. Inland is the Pentewan Valley Trail which is 4km of woodland and riverside walking following an old gauge railway to the village of London Apprentice. The village also has a small, friendly pub with tables on the old harbourside. There is a wonderful sandy, beach which is ideal for families.

The town of Mevagissey is just a 5 minute drive in a southerly direction. Mevagissey is a wonderful little Cornish fishing village in South East Cornwall. Ideally located within easy reach of both The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project. The tiny seaside village is packed with old Cornish cottages complete with narrow alleyways leading to converted fish cellars offering gift shops, galleries, pubs and cafes. Once a major Pilchard port, now the harbour boasts a smaller fleet, many of which provide sea tours, or boat trips to Fowey situated further up the South coast. The Harbour provides an ideal back drop for a fish and chip supper, followed by a stroll through the town at dusk.

With an eight minute drive to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and 30 minutes to the Eden Project, Mevagissey provides a excellent location for the keen gardener. Gorran Haven nearby offers an alternative day out as well as Pentewan with its fresh water dock basin. You can continue south along the coast down to Caerhays Castle and Porthluney Cove. Cliff walks in all directions along the coast offer spectacular views out across the St Austell Bay.

A fantastic week in Pentewan

What a marvellous time we had ! A week mid December where the weather was kind, sunny and mild. This is a stunning location to give you a great base for sightseeing and enjoying the many places to explore. There are plenty of beautiful fishing harbours, beaches, the Eden Project is a must and so much to see. We spent our days out, came back to a couple of beverages in The Ship, which is only 100 steps from the door and dinner in the cottage. The amenities in the cottage are top notch and it has absolutely everything you will need. We needed nothing at all, from kitchen equipment, to comfort with a sore each for relaxing. The village is great, friendly inclusive people, always happy to stop and chat and The Ship is just the nicest little pub, so welcoming, with fantastic food. All in all the best week and we will definitely be back.

October stay at The Customs House

The Customs House is in an excellent location in the centre of the pretty and friendly village of Pentewan. There are wonderful sea and coastal views from the cottage. The property was clean and comfortable and has plenty of space and good amenities. It provided an excellent base from which to explore the area, both by car, foot and kayak.

Good location

Lovely light lounge. Easy access to Pentewan beach and village facilities. Allocated parking but was a nightmare for large car, this really does need to be addressed, as says room for two, possibly smart car size

Great location

We booked this holiday having stopped at another property in pentewan last year. The location is excellent, a short walk to the beach and pub/cafes. However, we found the house very tired and in need of some tlc. The stairs were quite steep and treacherous for children and we had issues with 12 lights not working and no local TV channels. The owner did come and replace/repair 10 of the lights the next day. Very damp/drains smell in the dining room meant we did not use the room for our stay.

Fantasic family friendly stay right next to the beach

Custom House is a brilliant family friendly spacious house, possibly for slightly older children due to the two sets of stairs, that is kept to a very high standard. It has everything you need from great Wifi, to a washing machine and dishwasher. Best of all the beds are extremely comfortable and the location superb. It's a five minute walk to the beach, a wonderful cafe and the local pub and the house is one of the best we have ever stayed in in Cornwall. Everyone in the village especially the neighbours were extremely friendly and the only downside if you could even call it that is that it's a bit tricky to park if you have a big car.

An idyllic cottage in a quaint cornish village

Lovely cottage in an ideal village location for a beach holiday. Only downside it isn't very small child friendly as there are two flights of open staircases to upper lounge and bedrooms and there is no garden area.

Traditional terraced cottage in a great location

Enjoyed a relaxing early summer fortnight in The Customs House in Pentewan. Its an easy stroll to the beach, and there are plenty of places to eat and drink in the village, our favourites being Judes Brasserie and the Ship Inn. There are numerous villages and coves nearby if you fancy a change of scenery. The cottage is well placed and the parking spaces are a big bonus. There are good views from the lounge, though the double-glazing units need attending to as they are often full of condensation which obscures the view. The cottage is clean and well-equipped with a small sun-trap front garden overlooking the town square. Overall a good base to explore from, or plenty to do in the immediate area if you prefer.

Reply from Marie Morrison

Thankyou for your review and I'm very pleased that you enjoyed your holiday With regard to the double glazed windows we are aware of the problem and in fact the new Windows have been custom made but require 6 hours for fitting and as we've been fully booked since they've been completed we are unable to have them fitted as we only have six hours between each guest leaving and arriving So sorry for your not being able to see so well out of the Windows but they will be replaced as soon as we get a break in the letting .

A wonderful break!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Customs House. Lovely, well equipped cottage in a very peaceful village. An ideal place for a couple to enjoy a relaxing break, though anyone with dodgy knees may find the stairs a challenge! The Ship inn is 102 steps from the cottage and provides good beer, cider and excellent food; also a very warm welcome to visitors. The farm shop that is next door to the Lost Gardens of Heligan sells wonderful meat, locally sourced vegetables and excellent cheese. The cottage is ideally situated to explore Cornwall and offers good walks locally. We had not been to this part of the world in over 20 years, we now realise what we have been missing!

All in all an very good cottage ideal for a family stay in Cornwall. The cottage is very clean and comfortable and would recommend to every one.The is lots to do walking, cycling and the Ship Inn is fantastic. The only criticism is the is a lovely view from the front and rear windows they all need cleaning and the front have a lot of condensation obscuring the view.

Reply from Marie morrison

Thanks for your lovely comments Sorry about the condensation we are very exposed in pentewan in certain weather conditions and that contributed to the obscuring of views The windows are cleaned inside each week and outside fortnightly but we will check when the wind is in the direction of the house that they are clean

October half term

We loved the house and its location. We took our bikes and made use of the local cycle trails. The beach is lovely and we enjoyed walking here as well as following the South West coastal path. The house itself was extremely clean and had all the basic equipment we needed. It was lovely to sit by the lounge windows and watch the world go by! From reading other reviews we had been warned that there may not be any toilet roll and took our own (just as well). The only other thing on the negative side was that the bed was quite hard however as we had lots to do each day sleep was not a problem. The village location was lovely - the neighbours were very friendly. The house is a stone's throw from The Ship and we enjoyed some drinks by the fire during the week. This was a great place to stay.

Lovely house in a great village

We spent a very comfortable week in the Customs House. The house was spotless and both the owners and the neighbours were very friendly and helpful. Perfect size for a family of 4 and well laid out to make the most of the views. The village is peaceful but with everything you need - we didn't use our car at all some days - a 2 minute walk to the beach, a nice pub and a restaurant, walks and bike rides straight from the door. It was easy to walk to Mevagissey for fish and chips by the harbour, or cycle to the Lost Gardens of Heligan - beware the killer hills though! Would definitely return and would recommend this house to others.

Fab location and clean beech.

The instructions for the centre heating were now where to be see. The outside shower had poor water collection when the shower was in use and it used to drain out through the door and onto the tiles outside the shower. The hot water was not constant and it took hours to try and run a bath. We did not know when the waste collection was being collected I.e what day. There would have been better if there was more cutlery not just 4 spoonsknifes/fords etc. all the other kitchen appliances were in a v era good standard. Location was spot on . The layout would have been quite difficult for young children due to the stairs being very steep, varnished and only rope holders to grip.

Many Thanks

We enjoyed our Christmas at the Customs House. The village is lovely and the property was clean and the living area and bedrooms cozy. There was no toilet paper on our arrival and the kitchen was missing a few things for our self catering. You should bring kitchen things you know you'll need to cook comfortably. However, we were warmly invited with a bottle of wine and mince pies. The key was easy to pick up and leave and the parking was easy as well. We didn't want to leave. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.

The Customs House is a superb holiday home , extremely comfortable and beautifully furnished . The owner has paid great attention to detail . We were very impressed . The house is ideally situated for exploring Cornwall and Pentewan village is picture postcard perfect - very quiet in the evenings but entertainment can be sought at the Ship Inn a minute's walk away . The village cafes and shop are friendly and clean - the ice cream delicious . The beach , five or so minutes walk away is beautiful and never crowded and even has a restaurant right on the sand { book for dinner ] . A wonderful week despite the rain .
