Withiel is situated about 5 miles from Wadebridge and 15 miles from both Newquay and Padstow. The Atlantic Coast of Cornwall offers some of the most picturesque and breathtaking scenery in the country with golden sandy beaches at 25 locations within 20 miles from Sloe Cottage; these include Crantock, Fistral, Perranporth, Polzeath and Watergate Bay. Most of these are patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the summer season. The coastal footpath delivers some stunning walks and incredible views through this dramatic section of coastline. Hustyns, the luxury spa and resort centre, is only 10 minutes away by car and offers day passes to the gym and swimming pool as well as a variety of beauty and spa treatments. There is also a first class restaurant. The golf courses of St Enodoc and Trevose are within easy reach.
These days Newquay's excellent surfing waters are the town's main industry, whereas it once used to be a major export port for the county's mining efforts as well as a north coast port for pilchard fisheries. Fistral Beach holds many surfing competitions throughout the year, and also hosts Run to the Sun over May Bank holiday, a VW and Custom Car Show. Both the Women's and Men's Gig Championships are held here, as is a balloon festival and surf and lifesaving events. Newquay Zoo now houses 130 different species in sub tropical gardens in the centre of the town.
Neighbouring Watergate Bay and The Extreme Academy offers you a 'ski resort on a beach' and a plethora of activities to keep even the most active occupied. Fifteen Cornwall, founded by Jamie Oliver in 2002, sits on top of the two mile beach at Watergate offering inspirational views for the young chefs and professionals to create fantastic menus from local and seasonal produce. The Lappa Valley Steam Railway just outside Newquay offers both the old and young an interesting day out. Newquay Airport has made the north coast one of the easiest places in Cornwall to get to, with regular flights from various locations across the UK. The town also has an Aquarium, a Waterworld and numerous immensely pretty beaches for the less active. Trerice, run by the National Trust and 3 miles outside of the town, is an Elizabethan manor house and garden with restricted winter opening times.
Wadebridge, once a market town, is now more widely known as being part of The Camel Trail, the cycle route out to Padstow from the depths of Bodmin Moor on the old tramway route. You can hire a bike at the start of the trail and cycle to Padstow, now famous for being home to Rick Stein's The Seafood Restaurant, amongst others which the celebrity chef owns in the town. From Padstow you could take a boat trip across the Camel Estuary to Rock and lounge on the beautiful beach that stretches all the way around to Daymer Bay. The National Lobster Hatchery neighbours Rick Stein's empire in Padstow.
The Royal Cornwall Show ground at Wadebridge hosts the county show every June, come rain or shine, and is opened each year by a member of the Royal Family. Cornish farmers have had to diversify in recent years and so has the Show, but they have kept their traditional roots with steam engines being shown next to the shiny new high-tech tractors. It's not every day you get to see formation JCB digger dancing in the main ring. The National Trust have three properties nearby - Lanhydrock House, Trerice and Carnewas & Bedruthan Steps. Slightly further afield is the Eden Project in St Austell, famously built in a disused china clay pit.

Great for families with dogs, very relaxing and spacious. Only improvement is the en suite shower a bit unreliable temperature wise but except for that I will thoroughly recommend and will hope to visit again in the future

A lovely cottage equipped with everything you need and more. The friendly owners greeted us on our arrival and left us milk, tea and coffee, also a pretty vase of flowers on the table. The location allows you to visit the north and south coasts. We went to Fowey, Charlstown, Looe, Polperro, Falmouth, St Ives, Padstow and Newquay. We also played golf at Holywell bay. Our only regret is that the weather was so good we did not get to use the lovely log burner.

Very clean and tidy with all the facilities we required , lovely quiet location. Would definitely go back.
Guest from Warminster stayed for 7 nights.
Cottage was excellent with a lot of thought gone into what people might need. Heaters and blankets for those lovely cornish summers! Kitchen had everything for a meal indoors and for those not packing quite enough for the weather. Only issue we had was our Sat nav taking us through every narrow lane possible. Practice your reversing.

We stayed at Sloe Cottages for 4 nights and I would love to have taken the cottage with me for the remainder of our holidays. By far the best appointed, cleanest and and most homely place that we have been blessed to stay. 10 out of 10 on all points and will stay here again given the opportunity.

Wow what a find - fantastic accommodation furnished beautifully with all you need and more. Spacious and clean. Enjoyed the log fire. Bonus able to take dogs. Highly recommend and can't wait to visit again

Myself and my family stayed in Sloe cottage and thought it was a very nice comfortable cottage , we also used the wood burner as the week we stayed was quite wet and cold and it was brilliant. I think it has got some lovelly walks you can go on in the summer (we gave it ago when we were there but sadly quite wet) with some good views in places of the Cornish countryside Also may I say thank you to our hosts who also posted a charger and lead we forgot there when we left.

We loved sloe cottage, from the moment we arrived it was like a home from home, fresh flowers, beautiful furnishings and a spectacular location. We all highly recommend this stunning cottage.

Having just returned from a fantastic week in Cornwall, we are just about to book again for next year and Slow Cottage is where we'll be staying. Chris & Shirley have really thought about everything you could possibly need when staying away from home. The cottage feels remote but is only a short drive from most of the main attractions. There are also gorgeous walks from the cottage to be enjoyed!
Guest from Burnham stayed for 7 nights.
Cottage was very comfortable and very well equipped. Wanted a one level cottage for a disabled. Steps to outside were a bit steep but overall could not fault it.
Guest from Midwoud stayed for 7 nights.
Sloe Cottage far exceeded our expectations. It was a real home from home and simply everything we could have needed was provided. The warm welcome of fresh flowers in a vase, coffee, milk in the fridge and a packet of cookies was a lovely touch of hospitality. The location was beautiful and if we are ever in Cornwall again we will certainly make a bee-line to Sloe Cottage. We stayed there with four adults and our American travel companions were really impressed by the cottage and it's facilities. We couldn't have wished for more.
Guest from Norwich stayed for 7 nights.
Very clean and well equipped, with lots of lovely extra touches such as fresh indoor plants to make your stay a home away from home. The roads leading to the cottage are narrow but you soon get used to them. We would stay again.
Guest from Walton on Thames stayed for 7 nights.
Sloe Cottage is one of the prettiest properties we have stayed at in North Cornwall. Tucked away in the quiet, rural village of Withiel but not far from either Wadebridge or the North Cornish beaches, it is without doubt the best-equipped property we have ever stayed at. The vast range of cutlery, crockery, cooking implements, sofa cushions, towels is amazing, the bbq is excellent and the location (set around a kind of village green) meant that the children had lost of space to play. Luckily the weather was great during our stay but the TV and music system meant that there was also lots of inside entertainment when needed. A very well-kept and charming property which we can fully recommend to others.
Guest from Ormskirk stayed for 7 nights.
Beautiful cottage. Everything you might need is there. Only negative aspect was the Cockerell. Woke us all up every morning at 4am which was very annoying as we didn't get as much sleep as we had hoped for.
Thank you for your review, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay at Sloe cottage. We have put a lot of time and effort into up grading the cottage since buying it in March 2015 and are continuing to do so. We are sorry the cockerel disturbed your sleep. Cockerels are common place in a country setting and we think beyond our control. They come to life when it gets light which is currently around 5.50am according to Google. If we can think of any way to rectify this annoyance we will.

This was a lovely weeks stay with my family, after an initial electric malfunction on the day of arrival which was very promptly dealt with we had a great time, the people were so friendly and helpful, the cottage was very high speck, thank you very much Chris & Jenny, also Rob who helped sort out the electric.

We had a great short break away staying at sloe cottage. The location is close to the coastline with some great beaches to visit and a woodland walk only minutes from the cottage, which the children loved. The cottage itself is very comfortable, has everything you need for a relaxing holiday, it really is a 'home from home'. I am looking forward to our next stay at sloe cottage, and would highly recommend to family and friends.

Comfortable and clean, peaceful home from home, perfect to explore Cornwall. Would certainly stay here again and we would definitely recommend this cottage to family and friends.
Guest from Durham stayed for 7 nights.
We had a lovely stay in Sloe cottage which we found exceptionally well equipped, notably in the kitchen area. The bedrooms are very pleasant with comfortable beds.We enjoyed the quietness there and walks locally and found easy access to both coasts. Once we got there we found it much easier to get to the cottage from the Bodmin road via Ruthenbridge rather than the recommended approach.
Guest from Manchester stayed for 14 nights.
Very nice cottage in a courtyard location. Very well appointed and very comfortable We have two dogs and the sheltered location with off road parking and no traffic was ideal. 20 mins from Padstow and Bodmin makes the cottage relatively well connected. 1hr to St Ives. 1hr 30 to Lizard. We would book again and would recommend to friends.
Guest from Stockport stayed for 14 nights.
A charming cottage in a great place. Easy to get to both coasts and other attractions. Some nice walks and places to run and cycle nearby. Would recommend to others.

We had a great time and left a note to that effect in the visitors book. Cornwall is a great place to visit and we would come here again. Thanks for everything.

We spent 5 days here, very enjoyable. The cottage was clean and ready when promised. Lots of wood for the fire and comfortable beds. Ideal for our needs.

Location and accessibility: Having visited and stayed in cottages in North Cornwall for the past 8 years, we elected to stay a little further south this year in order to access places such as Eden, Heligan and the Minack Theatre. Hence Sloe cottage centrally located near Bodmin was an ideal location for us. The routes into the cottage from either the A30, A39 and from Wadebridge are complex and honestly I relied on sat nav to get me to the cottage on every journey. The windy roads are fun at first but get a little tiresome as there are a lot of blind corners and so have to be driven at a very slow speed. The payoff is that the cottage is off the beaten track and you really do feel that you are in the country! Condition Upon arrival is was apparent that the complex is well maintained. Parking could have been an issue as we brought 3 cars and the designated car park was full. We managed to park on the slip road next to the cottage and kept one car in front of the cottage, so in the end its wasnt a big deal. Slow cottage itself was clean and are tastefully decorated. The 3 bedrooms were a good size and the living room could fit 6/7 on the sofas. We had an issue with the entry step, but having discussed this with the owner this was promptly rectified. Comfort Our biggest bug-bear was the fact that there was only a single bathroom (containing the toilet), which shared between 7 was a big issue and meant that the mornings were slow as everyone took their turn getting ready. A separate en suite is definitely needed. The installed shower wasnt great but ok. The other problem were flies there were a lot of them! This I guess goes hand in hand with staying in the countryside, but aside from a can of aerosol there were no other fly deterrents. The fireplace was a great touch and warmed the cottage very quickly (and plenty of tinder / logs located just outside of the cottage). Wifi coverage was good and the applicances (microwave, dishwasher) were in good order. The outside BBQ and chairs were also in good condition - and in the afternoon sun was a lovely space to mingle and chat to the other guests. Other points: The welcome folder could do with an update for example there was a nice place to walk (next to the stream) the dog just 2mins away, however this wasnt highlighted in the welcome folder. Also there was no mop / vacuum cleaner in the cottage (later found out that a hoover was available in the cleaners cupboard again should have been mentioned in the folder). Verdict: a nice cottage in a good location, but the bathroom issue was a problem (may not be an issue for smaller groups). The field and stream down the road also makes it a great place for dogs.
The Cottage is advertised for 6 guests only.Another bathroom would be ideal but unfortunately there it would mean taking a bedroom away.As to parking we do not expect 1 cottage to bring 3 cars extremely unusual.I am sorry about the roads but it is the same in a lot of parts of Cornwall. Comment by Cornwalls Cottages: Since David Jackson wrote the above reply, the property has changed hands (in 2015) and the new owners have made a number of improvements to the property, including the addition of an ensuite shower room with WC.
Guest from Fareham stayed for 7 nights.
The cottage was lovely very well equipped, clean and comfortable. Lots of literature and local info available and we were very impressed with everything
Guest from Peterborough stayed for 7 nights.
Sloe had all the facilities we needed and provided a great base for the North and South coast. The rural location was quiet and relaxing. We had too many places on our agenda to explore more of the immediate countryside, but it looks like you could spend all week doing that. The barbeque was cleaned out for us and charcoal and lighters were provided - a nice touch. We were pushing the limits with 7 people and one bathroom - ideally for any more than 4 people there should be two bathrooms, or at least a separate toilet. The flies were a bit of nuisance and probably warrant some more permanent fly-zapping solution, although this did provide some pre-dinner sport with rolled-up news-papers. :-)
Reference this review.Sloe Cottage is advertised to sleep 6 persons not 7.As a favour to Mr Dickens I said he could bring an extra person.I was delighted he enjoyed all other aspects of Sloe Cottage.
