Reputed to be one of the oldest villages in Cornwall, Mithian (Cornish: Mydhyen) is a picturesque village, full of character and charm where each building has its own individual story to tell.

The village is served by The Miners Arms, a 16th century pub that has had many varied uses over the years including a smugglers lair - the pub still has the original smuggling tunnel running under the road to the Old Manor House opposite. Other buildings in the village are heavily linked to the areas mining heritage, such as the Rose-in-Vale Hotel which is originally thought to have been built as a winter home by Captain John Oates, the owner of the Wheal Leisure Copper mine in nearby Perranporth. Mithian with its stunning countryside is the perfect setting for a romantic break or a family holiday. It is also a walkers heaven being perfectly situated for exploring the coastal paths, the captivating history and the beautiful nearby beaches of Trevaunance Cove and Trevellas Porth at St Agnes, Chapel Porth, and Perranporth.

St Agnes, just to the west of Perranporth on the North Cornwall coast was one a thriving mining community. St Agnes is now a perfect base for those wishing to walk the North Cornwall Coastline, or for those interested in its copper and tin mining heritage. The village offers many restaurants, cafes and galleries as well as a free museum on the outskirts. St Agnes Beacon is a 328 foot climb, and on a fine day you can see from coast to coast. The view is spectacular and well worth the climb. The North Coast contains the best beaches for surfing, Perranporth and Porthtowan are a short drive away and both provide equipment hire. Wheal Coates tin mine, near Chapel Porth is a prominent feature of the North Coast and is the beginning of a trail that continues past many other mining works down to Trevellas, the last tin production site in Cornwall.

A lovely place to stay in the country but near beaches.

The property was in a very nice hamlet complete with great pub set in the Cornish countryside. The town of St. Agnes was very close with it's surfing beach, cafes and shops. Truro and the south coast were only a short car journey away. The property was very well equipped and looked after and the owners on hand should we need them. Coming back to Skyber Byghan after a day out was truly like coming back home. We often had our evening meals there as the cooking facilities where extremely good and the lounge was very cosy and comfortable. Thank you for making our stay so pleasurable.

A home away from home

Skyber Bigham is a compact but beautifully equipped cottage. It is situated in the village of Mithian, close to St Agnes and Perranporth and is well positioned for visiting the area. The rooms are bright and presented in lovely beach themed colours and immaculately clean. The owners have put a lot of thought into providing everything you need, right down to beach towels and even plastic cutlery to take on picnics. All the kitchen utensils, pots and pans, towels and bedding are of higher quality than expected in a holiday let. My usual box of equipment and cleaning materials from home was totally redundant. We had a lovely week and would happily stay there again.

Well worth a visit

Very convenient location excellently equipped and very comfortable. Shortage of wardrobe space the only drawback however there was plenty of drawer space.

Lovely cottage + beautiful location = great holiday

We stayed in Skyber Byghan for a week in May. The cottage was excellently presented and the owners in the attached property were very welcoming. The cottage is well located for both north and south coast beaches and attractions. Nearby St Agnes has many restaurants and the Miner's Arms in Mithian is well worth a visit... or two.

A Perfect Spring Break

My wife and I spent a very enjoyable week staying in Skyber Byghan. We received a warm and friendly reception on arrival and found that the kitchen had been stocked with basic foodstuffs and the makings of a Cornish cream tea. The accommodation is beautifully presented, comfortably furnished and comprehensively equipped. And to top this, the property is located just two or three minutes walk from the splendid Miners Arms. Highly recommended.

Lovely cottage with everything you may need

I loved this cottage. It is fully equipped with anything you could possibly need, especially the kitchen. The owners really thought of everything. Also, everything provided is of good quality. There are some nice extras waiting for you on arrival: scones, clotted cream and jam for cream teas, some fancy English-grown tea, biscuits, chocolates, butter, milk and smal bottles of mineral water. Very nice. Lovely location 1min walk from a lovely old pub with good food. Beach is a short drive away. Really lovely. Highly recommended. A few minor downsides: The main downside was that Wifi was unreliable and kept disconnecting frequently. This may have been just temporary during our stay. The remaining issues are really just very minor points: I found the bed a bit too hard and not as comfortable as I would have liked, but I guess this is a personal preference; there is no bedside table or a reading lamp for the bunk bed, so it was a bit inconvenient for my friend to not be able to read at bedtime and to have to keep a glass of water on the floor (I guess it would be less of an issue for children); the living room, although comfortable, feels a little bit bland, especially in comparison to other rooms, which are all very stylish and pleasant. All in all, excellent accommodation. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to friends. Well done!

Reply from Nic Field

I must admit I am surprised by some of the comments. Nothing was said on the guests departure about any issues; wi-fi is normally not an issue but the cottage has thick walls and so can be troublesome but nobody else has ever raised concerns. We have discussed adding reading lights to the bunks but the only way to do this would be clip-on lights fixed to the bed (as I am not aware of a two story bedside table to cater for bunks :-)) Any suggestions as to why the lounge is bland would be welcome as we believe that it is in keeping with the rest of the cottage without too much clutter.

Great place to stay

Had a great two weeks here, lovely place, exceptionally well equipped. Very near beaches, and A30 for travelling about. But the best must be the beautiful chickens in the garden, so cute. Oh, and the pub round the corner, good food. Would definitely recommend.

A comfortable place to stay

Skyber Byghan is very clean and tidy barn conversion in the small village of Mithian, Cornwall. We found it central to the places we wished to visit then return to a quiet and peaceful home from home. A visit to the local Miners Arms Public house just round the corner is well worth it just for the food alone
