Porthleven lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which has the same status and protection of a National Park. It is the most southerly port on the Island of Great Britain and doubtless, Porthleven would have remained a small fishing inlet to this day had not there been an overriding need, in the early nineteenth century, for a harbour of refuge along this forbidding shore to which ships could run in times of distress. In the 1850's major improvements were carried out to the harbour and the handsome structure seen today dates from this time.

One of Porthleven's most recognisable buildings is the Bickford-Smith Institute next to the pier and harbour entrance. With a tower of 70 feet high, it resembles a church but is currently used as a snooker club and houses the town council offices. The building has featured in an episode of the TV detective series Wycliffe. Today Porthleven is well known as one of the best surfing spots in Great Britain. Powerful swells often exceeding 2 metres break on the shallow reef that was shaped when the harbour was changed in the 1950's. Porthleven is approximately 2.5 miles from Helston which is famous for its Floral Dance in May, a day when the whole town stops and dresses up for the day with dancing through the streets.

To the south east lies The Lizard Peninsula and Penzance is 12 miles to the west. Every June, Penzance holds the Golowan (Feast of St John) & Mazey Day celebrations. This week long celebration attracts many visitors and traffic is banished from the centre of Penzance during Mazey Day when the streets become lined with stalls and hold colourful processions. From Penzance harbour you can catch a ferry to the Isles of Scilly or travel to the islands via helicopter from Lands End. The sub tropical gardens of Morrab are definitely worth visiting.

excellent place

We considered the location rather better than expected from the description. The sea is very close, the panoramic view from the living room is phantastic and there is a well wind-protected area at the backside allowing breakfast outside in good weather conditions (the threshold of which British people seem to assume considerably lower than continental Europeans). The costal path is just passing the house, and, even though very quiet, the village centre is also only some hundred meters away. The interior of the house leaves no wishes open, the kitchen is perfectly equipped.
