Porkellis is a superb place to stay with stunning access to the bustling port of Falmouth, with it's vibrant atmosphere, Helford River, one of the most beautiful tidal creeks in the country made famous by Daphne Du Mauriers' classic novel Frenchman's Creek, and onwards to the untamed beauty and splendour of the Lizard peninsula.

?With easy access to Falmouth, attractions such as The National Maritime Museum Falmouth, Rick Steins Fish and Chips on Discovery Quay, Pendennis Castle and even St Mawes Castle via a 20 minute foot ferry, are all within reach. Falmouth is one of Cornwall's most popular places to visit because of its unique mix of attractions, water sports, beaches, history and place to eat. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall and Pendennis Castle are both high on visitors' lists of places to visit and the views from Pendennis on a fine day a truly magical. Falmouth is the sailing capital of Cornwall with its spectacular deep water natural harbour offering a haven for both cruisers and racers. Many events are held through the summer culminating in the famous Falmouth Regatta Week and associated shore side events. The beaches at Gyllingvase & Swanpool are coarse sand and are wonderfully sunny south facing spots. You can ride the ferry to beautiful St Mawes for the day or take a delightful trip around the estuary stopping off at either Trelissick Gardens or Smugglers Cottage for a cream tea! There are plenty of places to eat & drink in Falmouth and recently Rick Stein has opened his Fish & Chip Restaurant & Oyster Bar at Discovery Quay adding to the superb mix across the town.

Helston was originally a thriving port, however as the river silted up over the years, this ceased to be. Where the river joins the sea, is now Cornwall's largest freshwater lake. The market town has a mixture of Georgian & Victorian architecture. On Coinagehall Street is the Blue Anchor, originally a rest house for monks, which became a tavern in the 15th century. This is possibly the oldest brewery in the country selling the strong local brew, Spingo. Helston is the gateway to the Lizard Peninsula and to the Helford River, which has some beautiful villages, namely St Anthony in Meneage & Helford Village.

Porthleven is approximate 3.5 miles southwest of Helston. This charming fishing harbour also has world class surf break.

A little further along the coast, towards Penzance is Praa Sands, which has a mile of sandy beach.

North Helford covers the area from Maenporth to Helston and includes places such as Mawnan Smith, Helford Passage, Constantine & Gweek. The area has many delights such as Trebah and Glendurgan Gardens, The Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, Goonhilly Earth and Satellite Station and The Ferry Boat Inn.

Daphne du Maurier wrote her only romantic novel Frenchmans Creek about the River Helford, and who can blame her, the views really are beautiful. Glendurgan Gardens run by the National Trust hold a 176 year old laurel maze and the 'Giants Stride' swing most popular with children. St Anthony-in-Meneage holds a lovely little church primarily of medieval architecture. Maenporth beach tucked away on the westerly edge of Falmouth Bay boast spectacular views, well worth a visit.

Pleasant Stay

We had a lovely stay at Ruby Farm Cottage. It is very well situated to visit many attractive areas of Cornwall including the all important 'doggy beaches'. The patio area and little lawn were ample for our lively collie - she didn't escape as we feared. The local pub a very short walk away served us an excellent lunch.

Fabulous little cottage, wonderful holiday.

We stayed at RFC for two weeks and it was fabulous. We liked the location as it was convenient for touring the area. The welcome was lovely, and fresh flowers in the house and wonderful scones, jam and cream. The cottage is spotlessly clean and well equipped. Arran is an exceptional host, very friendly and helpful. We were very lucky with the weather and had the hottest 2 weeks in 40 years. We will definitely be back to this cottage, hopefully quite soon.

No need for any waffle from me in thanking you both for your lovely review! May I say, you were the most perfect of guests & I very much look forward to welcoming you both back. I shall bring the Shiraz next time.

Excellent central location

Peaceful farm in small village. Equi distant between all coasts . 30 min drive each way. Recommend . Local pub

Reply from Arran

Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review. Really glad to hear that you found the cottage clean, comfortable, in a good location & that you enjoyed our local pub, (we are very lucky to still have one within walking distance) and being able to get to the North & South coast easily. Sorry to hear you did not feel the cottage was full value for money. I'm afraid the running costs for these old cottages are far more than guests realise. The insurance is all year round, along with the business rates. We leave the heating ticking over all winter in order to stop the cottage becoming damp , then you add on all the PAT testing, gas certificates, boiler servicing, carpet and upholstery cleaning etc etc and I'm afraid we only just cover our running costs with the prices that we charge. But better an old cottage in use than lying unused and turning into a wreck, is what we have decided. Also, you did have a small discount with low occupancy which should mean that only one bedroom should be used during your stay but you were able to use two, and you did saved yourselves £40. Hope you had a safe and easy journey home.

Loved our stay at Ruby Cottage...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ruby Farm and would definitely recommend it. The cottage was well equipped and we didn't want for anything - apart from a little sunshine - but we cant blame Mrs Middleton for that! There is plenty to explore in the surrounding areas and its perfect for visiting Falmouth, Penzance and Lizard. The kids and our dog loved it too. Thank you.

Review of Ruby Farm Cottage

We were very pleased with the cottage which was very comfortable and has a lot of character. We were delighted with the saffron cake and cream on our arrival. We were advised that the internet is limited but it may be worth mentioning to future quests that we were unable to download any data during our stay, despite being the first to use the cottage this year, so were unable to check e-mails: however this did not affect our stay which we enjoyed immensely.

Reply from Arran Fleur

Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review. Lovely to hear that your found the cottage very comfortable and enjoyed the saffron cake. I’m so sorry to hear that you were unable to download your e mails, it is normally just gaming that effects the internet. Had I known I would have looked into it while you were here. But thank you for bringing it to my attention now. On investigation, it appears that the other guests were downloading an awful lot. Whether this had a knock on effect, I’m not sure? I have also discovered that Ruby Cottages’ WIFI signal is strongest in the dining area, the kitchen and the upstairs double bedroom, so for future guests staying, downloading with your device in these areas may help. On the plus side, Fiber Optic has made it’s way to Porkellis and we are in the process of changing over. I do hope you had a safe journey and that you enjoyed Cornwall.

Ruby Farm Cottage

It was as good,if not better, than the brochure description. It would be helpful if towels could be provided as they are bulky items to bring. This may involve a small additional charge.

Reply from Arran

Thank you very much for taking the time to write us a review. Lovely to hear that Ruby Cottage more than lived up to your expectations. Sorry you were disappointed about the towels. We do provide them for people flying here from abroad if need be but I'm afraid my washing machine couldn't cope supplying them for everyone nor would our storage! We are what we say we are on the tin "self catering" even for towels!

Fabulous location and beautiful cottage with plenty of charm.

Wonderful welcome from the owner, with flowers and a Cornish cream tea laid out for our arrival. The cottage is beautiful and very comfortable, the photographs do not do this pretty cottage justice! We had a great time exploring Cornwall from the perfect location and it was really nice to return to the peace and quiet every evening. Our dog loved the surrounding walks too. We will definitely stay at Ruby Cottage again and strongly recommend it. Thank you.

A lovely cottage in a beautiful location.

The cottage has a lovely homely feel and provided everything we needed to make the stay comfortable. It is in the perfect location to explore all that cornwall has to offer. The local pub was very friendly and we particularly enjoyed visiting poldark mine which is very close by. I would highly recommend this cottage.
