Portreath, situated on the North Cornwall coast, about 5 miles north of Redruth, was originally a small fishing village. Today it's a beautiful retreat with a narrow harbour, secluded sandy beaches and a stream running to the sea on one side. It is ideal for swimming, surfing and windsailing in watched by the local Surf and Life Saving Club. Portreath offers the pleasures of sea and countryside with beautiful views, spectacular cliffs and walking trails. Illogan Woods is adjacent to Portreath with lovely streams and a circular walk leading to the 14th century church tower of Illogan. There is also Tehidy Country Park just outside of Portreath with its adjoining golf-course. It is a beautiful country park comprised of 250 acres of woodland, lakes, bridleways, cycling and nature trails. There are several ponds and a lake with swans and various kinds of waterfowl. Occupying a dramatic valley location with one of the most spectacular and beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Coast, Porthtowan has been drawing visitors for years to take advantage of its natural sun trap. A superb location for a holiday to Cornwall with a fine beach and close to good main roads means that you can easily explore the surrounding area on days that are not conducive to sitting on the beach.

Porthtowan has one of Cornwall's finest surfing waves. Producing good waves at all states of the tide, the wave is particularly good in an easterly or south easterly when it really pumps with some lovely hollow barrels. It is not for the faint hearted and beginners should be careful. An excellent surf school operates from the beach. At low tide the beach stretches down to St Agnes Head and Chapel Porth Beach where you will find a lovely National Trust Cafe full of warming hot chocolate and fabulous views. From Porthtowan you are ideally located to reach the many beaches on the North Coast famous for attracting keen surfers and beginners alike.

Simply perfect

Was perfect and will 100% be returning. The only thing I will say if the wifi is is non existent and I did need it but there was a note left under the router explaining why it was so poor and they are working on it. There was a lovely lady that was so helpful and couldn't do enough for us called Michaela.

Everything at the cottage was lovely and the grounds are well kept and beautiful.

As previously stated everything was of a high standard and the owners made themselves easily available. There was only one problem and there was a smell that became too much to bare. The owners responded quickly and offered to move to a different cottage but we were leaving the next day so declined.

Guest from Bidford on Avon stayed for 7 nights.

Nothing to criticise.

As far as the property goes, it's just lovely. Spotlessly clean and a wonderful view of the Cornish countryside. Has everything you would expect inside and more - dishwasher, washing machine, good size fridge and freezer. This cottage also has two 2 seater sofas which recline (one of the seats doesn't because it's broken but we weren't expecting that anyway so not an issue) Dishwasher tabs and washing up liquid was provided which was a nice touch. The location is not ideal. It's a halfway house between Portreath and Redruth so you have to travel anywhere to do or get anything. We knew that beforehand of course so again, it's not a criticism, but something to be aware of. There is a pub within walking distance but we didn't try it as it's not the nicest or flattest walk. It's called The Bridge Inn in the village of Bridge. It's an estimated 15-20 minute walk along a tramway towards Portreath. Beware the length of that tramway! I read in the literature that Portreath is a 20 minute walk away - it is not!!! It's 40-45 minutes. Signposting was a bit of an issue. There is not a signpost off the road that the site is located on and it's very easy to miss it. All in all, a lovely modern cottage that I would recommend to anyone.

Palm cottage

The photo shown is not of Palm Cottage...... Although the site is very nice. Very well run and maintained with excellent views. The ground surrounding Palm Cottage had just nowhere to sit comfortably. The picnic table was up the other end of the cottage , not just outside the patio doors, and there was nowhere to sit outside to relax. We eventually pulled the settee over to be by the open patio doors just so we could see the lovely view and feel the fresh air. There were no outside comfortable garden seats provided. Also although it states the site is dog friendly none of the cottages have a safe sectioned off area where you could comfortably and safely let your God be free. Overall the site is lovely but could be greatly improved.....

We had the most wonderful stay at Palm Cottage. A great loavtion for exploring Cornwall. Superb!

The cottage was spotless and felt brand new. It had all the home comforts you need (even salt and pepper). The location is perfect. Close enough to the main roads and a huge Tesco for convenience but it felt like you were in the countryside. The view was amazing, rolling countryside and hills. The kids loved it too.

Great cottage in a beautiful location with good road links to Cornish landmarks

This property was nicely furnished, clean and tidy, although there was a slight sewage smell coming from the back of the property, which was quite unpleasant. The location was brilliant as it has good road links to lots of great places across Cornwall. In addition, we particularly liked the links to the mineral tramway, which provided hours of fun cycling along off-road in beautiful countryside. The cottage is suited to a family, especially as the play area is in view of the house and there is lots of room for children to run around on the North Cornwall Cottages land. The internet wasn't great, but the staff were really helpful in providing a booster for the wifi, which made it much better. I would definitely recommend this cottage, especially out of peak season as it is much more affordable.

Reply from Natalie Martin

Thank you so much for your review. The sewage smell is now being taken care of, so thank you for making us aware. This seems to be the only cottage to have experienced this smell so we are already in process of fixing. We would love to welcome you back again with very best wishes Natalie

Short November break at Palm cottage

Excellent cottage. A real surprise for a dog owner to find such a property. Clean, smart, everything you need for a relaxing holiday. A comfortable bed, reclining leather sofas, Internet access ....I really can't think of anything it was short of. Oh yes ! Salt and pepper pots ..lol . The heating was excellent , in fact it was too warm at times. The weather was awful while we were there, but when the cloud and mist cleared there were lovely views from the cottage, and can imagine how nice it must be to sit outside at the picnic table in the summer. The staff were lovely and extremely helpful as well. The area is beautiful, the beach at Portreath is lovely and the dogs loved running loose at this time of the year. A real gem. I hope to return in better weather. 5 star cottage and site.

Really great place to stay

We had a lovely holiday here over half term. As other people have said, there are lots of cottages on the site - 13 I think? But we didn't see many people and found it very quiet and peaceful. Beautiful views over a valley and very easy to get to places due to being a couple of miles from the A30. I was worried about the wifi seeing other people's reviews, and while it didn't cope very well with me trying to watch the Grand Prix qualifying on the laptop, simple browsing was no problem at all and we found it very useful. The team who greeted us were very helpful, answering any questions we had, and they had loads of leaflets and maps which were very useful for us tourists! We found the cottage had everything we needed and was well equipped. We were glad we took tea-towels with us though because there were only two dishwasher tablets and those were used pretty quickly. We don't have a dishwasher at home, so didn't think to bring any of those with us. The bed linen and towels and everything else in fact was very high quality - lovely! I would recommend staying here for sure.

Beautiful location, well presented...

Lovely location, close to Portreath, lots of doggie friendly beaches nearby. We were upgraded to the 'Rainbow' lodge as Palm was having some work done. There was everything inside we needed, all very clean, a couple of small problems were sorted by Jess the sire manager very quickly. The other staff were great, helpful and very friendly, will certainly consider returning...

Guest from Bochum stayed for 14 nights.

A beautiful place, very dogfriendly.

The house is nearly new, so everything was in a very well condition. The position on the hillside allows a nice view over the valley. Everybody was very friendly and uncomplicated. It`s a vantage point for touring west-Cornwall and it`s just a short drive to a very big Supermarket for all needs. What we didn`t liked was, that the announcement didn`t that clearly, that the cottage is part of a site with 15 cottages - and that the picture doesn`t show Palm Cottage but one of the others. That woudn`t matter if Palm Cottage wouldn`t be the cottage with the smallest patio of all. There`s no space left to put a chair somewhere if you don`t like to sit on the installed wooden bench. And in front of the patio there`s directly a bed, so we felt a bit locked-in. If you don`t mind that, it`s a really nice place to spend a holiday. But our advice would be to book one of the other cottages.

An ideally situated cottage for touring the west of cornwall. A brand new development that will only improve as the gardens mature. The cottage was light airy and modern, excellent kitchen and bathroom. Huge walk in shower and bath as well. Amazing views, close to th A30 for travelling around and Portreath is an amazing place, no dogs on the beach though. Also the coast to coast walk runs past the cottage!
