It has an enormous three-mile stretch of golden sandy beach extending all the way from St Ives Bay to Godrevy Lighthouse. The lighthouse stands on an island out to sea at Godrevy Point and provided Virginia Woolf with the inspiration for her novel 'To the Lighthouse'.
Behind the main expanse of sand you can find a two mile stretch of beach called the Towans, which is slightly more sheltered from the Atlantic waves and where the dunes provide a rich habitat for wildlife. Popular with locals and families alike is Gwithian. The beach is well known amongst surfers and beneath the surface lie the remains of one of Cornwall's oldest churches.
If you enjoy bird watching the mouth of the estuary is a fabulous place to spot avocets, ospreys and many varieties of wading birds. The estuary provides a feeding ground for many migratory birds. Paradise Park, as well as providing an adventure playground for children, also has an extensive collection of birds and breeding centre for rare species.
A few miles out of Hayle is the beautiful village of St Erth with a pretty church and river running through it. There is a lovely stone bridge, which is around 600 years old, and a medieval lantern near the Post Office. You might even be lucky and catch the annual rubber duck race on the River Hayle!
