The Tamar Valley is a stunning, quiet, picturesque region with some beautiful villages including Calstockwith its impressive Viaduct dominating the village, Calstock Quay was originally used for transportation of tin as there is a deep water navigable channel at the top of the tides, although the construction of the TamarValley Railway in the early 20th century led to most cargo being transported by rail. Further up stream is Morwellham Quay with its fantastic open air museum, Morwellham Quay has been awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO, the cultural arm of the UN, and is part of the Cornwall and West DevonMining Landscape. Tavistock is just over the border in Devon, an ancient stannary and market town on the edge of Dartmoor, it has a wealth of fine pubs, restaurants, supermarkets and tourist attractions including ruins of a Benedictine Abbey which was founded in 961.

Bodmin Moor, bisected by the newly expanded A30 is home to one of Cornwall's Areas of Oustanding Natural Beauty. Reaching a height of 1,377 feet above sea level at Brown Willy, Cornwall's highest point. The heather covered granite moorland provides East Cornwall with the most stunning country views and rugged walks. Near Blisland you will find two of Cornwalls stone circles, the Trippet Stones and Stripple Stone Henge and just round the corner, one end of the famous Camel Trail. The 18 mile Camel Trail follows the route of the old railway along traffic free paths, providing a fairly flat cycle through Bodmin and Wadebridge out to Padstow, eminently suitable for families. The National Lobster Hatchery at Padstow neighbours Rick Steins empire on the North Coast. The Bodmin and Wenford Railway, the first steam operated railway in Cornwall, takes in 13 miles of countryside. Also just outside Bodmin is the Camel Valley Vineyard who have been winning awards for their home grown wine for the past 20 years. The National Trust have a number of properties nearby - Lanhydrock House, Trerice, Cotehele and Antony (used for Disney's Alice in Wonderland), Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps. Slightly further afield is the Eden Project in St Austell. Bodmin Jail built in 1778, notorious for its public executions by hanging, was the first jail to be built housing inmates in individual cells. The Jail closed in 1927 and is now a museum open to the public, which during the First World War housed the Crown Jewels and the Doomsday Book. T

The market town of Launceston is the capital of Cornwall and well worth a visit to see the church of St Mary Magdelene, with granite carvings, unusual among Cornish churches.

The stannary town of Liskeard is at the head of the Looe Valley and is only 7 miles away. Liskeard is one of the few remaining towns in Cornwall to still have a weekly livestock market. Market day is Tuesday. It serves a number of small surrounding villages and is the gateway to Bodmin Moor. On Bodmin Moor, Dozmary pond is thought to contain Arthur's Excalibur, and Merlin is thought to be still found walking under Tintagel Island.

Camelford is a great centre for touring, walking, fishing, swimming or surfing holidays. The town is steeped in history and has excellent shopping and sporting facilities.

Port Isaac is the location of the televisions series Doc Martin and more recently Poldark, as well as being a gorgeous working fishing village.

Carkeet Cottage

Wonderful stay at Carkeet Cottage. A perfect retreat in a quiet area of Cornwall yet still within easy driving distance of the North and South Coast. Very clean and beautifully decorated with everything you need - even a cream tea provided on arrival! Lovely garden and great pub across the road. Would thoroughly recommend.

Guest from Camberley stayed for 7 nights.

a well presented cottage

tranquil location and away from the madding crowds, close to bodmin, lots to see and do in locality. A small dishwasher would have added to the experience of our stay avoiding washing by hand

Guest from Holbeach stayed for 14 nights.

Fantastic, cosy, immaculate Cornish cottage. Great for families.

Carkeet cottage was the absolute perfect base for our family holiday to Cornwall this summer. We have 4 children and so needed to ensure we would have enough space. Carkeet was roomy enough yet extremely cosy for our family evenings in. Joy and Jol provided toys that kept our little ones entertained on the odd rainy morning. We even arrived to a Cornish cream tea laid out on the dining table! Everything was like home from home, there was everything we needed and more. The cottage was presented to a very high standard, pristine! Joy and Jol also looked after us and made sure we were happy. We will definitely be paying Carkeet another visit in the fututre.
