The adorable Beach Hill Cottage is located in the heart of the picturesque & unspoilt village of Portloe only yards from the harbour beach and is perfect for a couple or a small family all year round. From just outside your front door you can watch the comings & goings of the local crab & lobster fishermen as they launch their boats and land their catches daily. This is Cornwall as we all imagine, but rarely find these days.

Beach Hill Cottage is a beautifully converted former fisherman's cottage. It is a small cottage, but full of character and wonderfully presented by the Owners. It is an ideal all year round basis as it has a woodburning stove for cosy winter evenings. It is perfectly positioned for exploring the miles of coastal walks and only a short drive to the spectacular Carne beach. The cottage itself has a small but well fitted kitchen with a dining table & slate floor. The lounge is a really cosy room & full of character with a wood burning stove and beamed ceiling. There is a comfortable sofa and window seat. There are steep stairs leading up to the first floor bedrooms & bathroom.

Accommodation
Ground Floor: Open plan kitchen, dining area and lounge.
First Floor: Double bedroom, single room with truckle bed (extending to a double bed) and separate bathroom with handheld shower & WC.
Exterior: There is no garden, but there is a small slate area to the front where there is a table and two chairs to sit and watch the harbour.

Facilities & Services
Heating is via the wood burning stove and combination convection/night storage heaters downstairs and in both bedrooms. The kitchen is fully fitted and has a dishwasher, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment and washing machine. The lounge has a TV / DVD player, CD & radio.

Miscellaneous
Electricity, heating, bed linen are included, but you will need to provide your own towels. There is a parking space right in front of the cottage which you can normally park in however please note that it is not for the sole use of the cottage so you may at times have to park in the main village car park which is a 5 minute walk away. Please note that the stairs at the cottage are quite steep. There is WiFi available at the property. Up to 2 well behaved dogs are welcome at a small additional cost of £25 per dog / per week. We regret no smoking is permitted. There is an iron and ironing board and clothes horse. There is a cot & high chair available on request.

Short breaks are available during quieter periods.
£100 security deposit is required to be pre-authorised on your card.

Portloe is considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of the Roseland peninsula and one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Its steep sided valleys has meant that it has managed to escape development over the years and many buildings differ little from when they were built. Sir John Betjeman said of Portloe "One of the least spoiled and most impressive of Cornish fishing villages". Portloe is an ideal place to stay on the Roseland Peninsula.

It is wonderfully quiet and peaceful, yet it has a really good local pub & hotel. The village itself is only a short drive from the other villages such as St Mawes. The city of Truro is also within a 25 minute drive. The Lugger Hotel with its excellent restaurant is only a few steps away and the Ship Inn is a short walk. The New Inn at Veryan serves food. There is also the Portloe Tea Room nearby. There is no general store in Portloe, however there are shops at Veryan (1.4 miles) and a Londis store at Bessy Beneath (3 miles). Further pubs, shops & restaurants are also available in Tregony, Ruan Lanihorne, Portscatho & St Mawes.

Beautiful small village.

Beach Hill Cottage is in a very scenic and in a very friendly village, the road down to the village is a little narrow but has the odd passing place, if driving down/up slowly not a problem. The cottage was equipped with all we needed and was very comfortable. The owners left us a welcome cake which we enjoyed with a nice cup of tea on arriving. We loved the stable door so we could have it open so our 2 dogs couldn't run off...(apart from one day when we forgot to close the door and our little dog went across to The Lugger Hotel!! Staff also very friendly :) ) Couldn't get TV to work, could of been reception or us! But didn't miss it, as we took our kindle HD with iplayer etc, and connected to the cottages WiFi speaker to listen to tv/music. Got car parked 4 out 7 days outside cottage, the car park is very close and is donation only. Small beach when tide out (dog friendly), Portholland beach 2miles walking up the coastal path...not so easy as we thought, but really pretty walk (dog friendly). Carne beach is lovely, a short car journey about 2.5miles (Dog friendly). To eat out in portloe, there is The ship inn, it has some lovely meals or at The Lugger Hotel. Melinsey Mill at Veryan (walkable) does a lovely sandwich (All allow dogs). Went to Truro on bus No51, leaves village every 2 hours and was £7.80 adult return ticket, picked up10:45am. Polperro worth a visit also port Isaac and padstow, all about 1hour drive. Tintagel castle lovely and of course Lands End. Cornwall has lots to offer if you want to be busy or just to take life at a steadier pace, don't forget to try the pasties! Beach Hill Cottage was a good base for us.

A perfect little "getaway from it all".

A wonderful cottage which was perfect for just the two of us in a stunning location. We arrived to find a beautiful home made cake which was very welcome after our long journey and absolutely delicious. The only slight negative location wise is that any walk you partake in is a challenging one. Most of the time this wasn't a problem but I did miss a leisurely evening stroll. The hotel opposite, The Lugger looked lovely and was very busy, And though being a little out of our price range, they very kindly made me an ice cream sundae when the local pub had let us down! Such a beautiful home with breathtaking views in every direction.

Total relaxation - again!

This is our 3rd stay at Beech Hill Cottage and it never disappoints. We still sigh with relief when we walk through the door as the stress just floats away....! First time in Spring and Cornwall was in bloom. The refurb looks great as it still captures the charm of this beautiful little cottage. Even though it's our third stay there is still plenty to explore - our dog Tilly had her legs walked off again but she loved it as much as us. If you want to go back to 'old Cornwall' go here. The people & village is so friendly. The cottage next door has had a makeover too and the harbour now looks really pretty. You can tell I'm in love with this place & we will return. The only thing we missed this time was the cake ;) - however my waistline benefited from it! Lovely lovely place :). Jane - Hertfordshire

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Thanks Jane, Paul - and Tilly. We are glad you like the new look, which also includes a new layout in the bathroom including a powerful shower. Becky does a brilliant line in cakes - Lemon and Blueberry is my favourite - but as she has young children and other commitments it is not always possible for her to supply these so we do not advertise them or guarantee supply (I wish..). That said, let me know when you are coming back and I will put in a special request! We really appreciate your comments.

Delightful Portloe Cottage

This was my second stay in Portloe which is a delightful and peaceful village. Beach Hill Cottage is homely and well equipped. We had a lovely week there. The joys of January holidays walking during the day and enjoying a log fire in the evening are very special. The cottage could have been a bit cleaner - quite a lot of cobwebs! The bath is small which is a drawback for two six footers but that is not unusual in cottages with small bathrooms and preferable to shower only. The most unfortunate aspect was the daily building work going on in the adjoining cottage which seemed to be having a refit - quite a lot of drilling and other noise associated with building and refurbishment. I would have avoided this property in that particular week had I known in advance that the peace would be quite so disturbed throughout the days. But overall I would recommend the property. Ideal for a couple as the second bedroom makes a useful dressing room. Might be a bit cramped with more than two staying.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Having read your comments I called you to apologise for the disturbance caused by the builders in the adjoining cottage which is owned the The Lugger Hotel. The Lugger is upgrading this into a guest suite and I passed on to you the Hotel Manager's profuse apologies that work was being carried out at the weekend which is not acceptabale. I understand this is now finished and we are flattered that the rather unloved next door cottage which, complete with old upvc windows and door, rather let down the appearance of this harbourside area of the village has now benefitted from a complete overall. We are flattered that it now replicates ours, complete with stable door and Georgian style sash windows. Turning to the inside, I too am a six footer and the bath is the longest we could reasonably accommodate in the small bathroom when we had the place completely remodelled after we bought it. We toyed with the idea of getting rid of the bath and installing a wetroom but on balance when we had the bathroom upgraded in early 2016 decided to retain a (new) bath with a powerful shower which hopefully gives all our visitors the option and the best of both worlds. Thank you for your comments and we hope to welcome you back again next year.

Thanks for your kind comments Richard. Although I love the village in the summer when the sun is shining, I think there is also something rather special about getting back to the cottage after a stormy winter's walk leaning into the wind and rain on the Coastal Path. Having watched the sea smashing over the rocks I enjoy pulling the door to behind me, closing the curtains and shutters, cranking up the woodburner and opening a bottle of wine!

Nice cottage in lovely location. Clean and well equipped. Very limited car parking. No batteries in either of the smoke detectors. Outside light not working.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Thank you for your positive comments. As the photographs on the listing show, there is ample parking right outside the cottage, but when staff from The Lugger Hotel park in "our" space we simply park in the hotel's car park across the road. I am very sorry someone has seen fit to remove the batteries from both smoke detectors (why?!) and these are being replaced this week. I will get the bulb changed in the outside light.

A genuinely sea sie cottage

You could not ask for a better location, right at the water's edge - not to mwtnio 20 yards away from a bar with a terrace o9verlooking the sea. It is a shame that since I last visited the village shop has closed, but it's not far to Veryan. The only criticism is that the kitchen stove is not up to standard - terrible solid hobs. Reply from Alastair Hazell

Thank you for your very positive comments. The built in electric oven and separate standard electric hob were replaced before the start of last season and I am sorry you found difficulty with the hob. Although it is disappointing the tea shop closed a few years ago (and we live in hope someone might reopen it one day!) we have never had a grocery store, but there are two nearby, one in Veryan and the other at the petrol station at Bessybeneath on the way up to Tregony.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

I am very sorry there had not been sufficient time prior to you arrival for the cottage to be tidied up fully after the previous guests' "smashing" time. The damage in the bathroom has now been repaired (window handle ripped off and broken light fitting - how guests think we will not notice these things is beyond me), all carpets cleaned throughout and stains removed. After many years I have at last been able to track down a supplier of spares for the woodburning stove which has now been overhauled. New heaters have been installed upstairs and we have upgraded the bedroom lighting with dimmable downlighters. We are also planning on replacing the bunkbed with a new daybed (single extending to double) in the near future. We are sure you will notice the difference and apologise that the condition of the cottage had fallen to beneath the high standards we strive to maintain at all times.

Beach Hill cottage has the most idyllic situation, it is a stones throw from the sea. It was very well equipped and the multifuel stove was ideal and kept the cottage snug. The bed was a bit too firm for us hence the good rather than excellent. We will definitely be coming back in the future.

Expensive and diassapointing

This is our third or fourth vist in the last four and have always enjoyed our stay. However, our last stay we did notice that the cottage is in need of some TLC. It was a great plus to have wi-fi installed although the skybox is limited and a freesat box would be better. Like most places the tv size is on the small side. Also on arrival we had two bulbs blow, which can happen at any time, but there no replacements to be found. The Sofa needs replacing and the two glass vases containing the candles need cleaning and new candles. The woodburner really needs a good look at. We are experienced in woodburners and the seals need replacing, the grate is broken and firebricks are cracked. Which I think has been mentioned in a previous review and had not been cleaned. The rug in front of the woodburner needs replacing. A small nest of tables would be practical. The kitchen are tired and smell musty and drawers were dirty. We realise there was a new dishwasher but the surround is yet to be finished so looks messy (pipes visible). The plastic flower in the kit hen needs to be thrown away. Greasy and old. Would appreciate a hairdryer in the bedroon drawer. The bathroom window handle was broken so window be opened and the towel rail plastic was cracked and loose. Behind the chest of drawers in the main bedroom had not been cleaned as there was dust, an old plastic flower and a wrapper. The carpet is beginning to look very used and the whole cottage smells musty and damp. We have had great stays in this cottage before over the years and very little has changed. I also feel that it was a little expensive for only three nights and the £25 surcharge for a dog, which is a weekly charge, is a little excessive. For the ammount paid for a short break with dogs here, we could have had hotel accomodation with meals. Saying that, the location is great and very tranquil and is ideal for walks. All in all an expensive dissapointment this time.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

I am very sorry you felt things were not up to scratch on this your fourth visit. We always strive to maintain the cottage in tip-top condition and to a standard we would expect ourselves. I will be down next week to supervise the end of season review and tidy up, but I would refer potential visitors to comments made by other recent visitors to Beach Hill Cottage both before and after Mt Turner. Hopefully you will have a better experience next time as we particularly welcome regular visitors.

A true Cornish experience!

This is our second visit to Beech Cottage & as soon as we arrived any stresses just melted away. It's a beautiful little cottage situated right in the harbour in one of, what we consider, to be the prettiest fishing villages in Cornwall. If you like the 'away from it all' type of break then this is for you. Having said that there is plenty around! There are loads of things to see & do all within short driving distances. Our favourite pastime though is just to get up, walk along the South West Coatal Path & see where we end up, with stunning scenery all the way. We will definitely be returning to Beech Cottage.

We stayed for a long weekend in this lovely, cosy, comfortable home from home. Lovely to be able to open the front door and look out to sea and the local fishermen coming and going. To be able to walk up to the cliff at night and watch the stars with the sound of the sea beneath you. A bonus having a great pub The Ship and a wonderful dinner venue, The Lugger with a stone's throw. Would highly recommend this beautiful place and will returnl

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Your comments are much appreciated - this is the feel we have tried to create at Beach Hill Cottage. There are no street lights in the village and it is a real bonus to be able to see the moon and stars so clearly, particularly when taking the short walk back to the cottage after an evening in The Ship! Cosy cottage

We booked Beach Hill very last minute out of desperation as everywhere else we had looked at was booked up. However, fate clearly dealt us a good hand as we were really pleased with the cottage and found it to be a very comfortable and cosy haven after a day out and about exploring Cornwall. It's also in a great spot in Portloe, right opposite the Luggar which was a good place for coffee / drinks and a good vantage from which to watch the fishermen. The cottage was warm - we took advantage of the log burner a few times although the central heating was sufficient - and the water constantly hot so no issues there. The bed was super-comfortable too and the living room a great place to chill out. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and would happily go back.

We left it rather late to book this years holiday and struggled to find anywhere to stay in Cornwall . How on earth was this place free? One of the most fabulous places we have ever stayed!! We have visited Cornwall a lot over the last 4 years as a family member has been living down there and we have stayed in a lot of different spots (mainly on the North coast). We have had some fabulous places , especially in the Winter when prices have been low. BUT , this place is the most delightful , charming spot we have ever stayed . The village of Portloe is chocolate box picturesque and the cottage was lovely. Clean and warm with everything we could have needed . Beautiful clifftop walks on a beautiful coastal path , a beautiful harbour that we had more or less to ourselves , the sea literally 50 metres away . One of the best holidays we have ever had!!

Fantastic!

The cottage is of a very high standard. Everything was clean and tidy and was like a home from home. The kitchen has all utensils needed to cook good meals. We ate in most nights and found everything very easy to use. The house has a good WIFI connection too. The beds was more comfortable than mine at home (and I'm very fussy about my bed!) The parking was no problem for us. We always managed to park outside of the property. The cottage has a large seat outside and we sat there most evenings, watching the world go by. We lit a BBQ a few nights and cooked fresh mackerel that one of the neighbours had caught that evening. Bliss. Portloe is a very peaceful, friendly little fishing village. There are a few good coastal walks in the area too. And the surrounding villages and beaches are all lovely. If you have a dog make sure to do your homework to find out which beaches are doggy friendly. I would recommend Carne Beach for dogs.Plenty of sand to run on with shallow water to paddle. We had a wonderful time at Beach Hill Cottage. I would thoroughly recommend it of you are looking for a calm and peaceful time away. The views and scenery are stunning and I would definitely return.

Alot of money for poor quality bed/sofa!

We really did enjoy our stay - the cottage is just right for two, really cosy , & in a fabulous quiet spot by the harbour. If only a bit more effort was made in the quality of the bed & sofa - for over £100 a night we expected a comfy bed for a good nights sleep & a comfy sofa to sit on. We weren't in the cottage for long & we were blessed with great weather so we were out for the best part of the days but the lack of a goods night sleep would have taken its toll had we been there longer. Quite a few previous guests had commented on the lack of the shower & the uncomfortable bed & we did add our agreement to that in the comments book at the cottage. Previous comments also said some TLC was needed & we also agreed with that, it wasn't filthy by any means but just looks as though a 'spring clean' should be done more often. All in all, we felt the photos were accurate & the pre-warning about the parking was good, we did as the owner advised in the book & parked in The Lugger car park one evening- it seems most of the staff park outside the cottage. We would recommend this cottage but at the moment we would advise that the bed is really cheap & old & not at all comfy & the only way to shower is with a hand held tap attachment to the bath.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

We are delighted you enjoyed your long weekend, but surprised by your comments. The former softer mattress was replaced with a brand new firm mattress just before Christmas mattress specifically because that is what a couple of guests had requested. We do not pretend to offer a shower in the cottage (and the listing does not refer to one) but we do have a normal handheld shower attachment to the bath mixer tap as can be clearly seen in the photograph. Most people find this perfectly adequate. Much of the cottage was freshly decorated over the winter and our very diligent manager and cleaner does a great job - guests who were staying in our other cottage in the village at the same time as you marked cleanliness as 5 out of 5.I am glad parking was not a material issue.

Peaceful Portloe

Once again an excellent stay at Beach Hill for us and our four legged friend. Good addition of the WiFi, a minor hiccup with the signal but thanks to Alison and Alistair for resolving it so promptly. The shower pressure at times is down to a trickle but otherwise a lovely comfortable cottage.

We logged a fault online with BT on the Monday evening and their engineer arrived on Tuesday morning to fix it. I am not sure we would get such good service at home. Sorry about the low water pressure in the shower at times which has never previously been an issue; all now back to normal. Lovely but with limitations

The cottage was fine and well set up for two to four people but the claim that you can sit outside the front door and watch the boats is far fetched. The cove is lovely but like all small coves parking is virtually non existent, One car had a tyre burst because of the uneven surface. I am trying to be objective, the cottage would really suit an energetic couple looking for lovely views from the cliff walks. We enjoyed visiting Caerhays, Lamoran, Trewithen and Trellisick Gardens, they are superb.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Beach Hill Cottage is in the very heart of the village and is only yards from the harbour beach. From the front (stable) door you have a great view of all the activity to and from the harbour and on sunny days you can sit outside as we have a table and two chairs on the narrow terrace at the front of the cottage. I guess every small cove will tend to have parking limitations but it is usually possible to park in one of the four spaces right in front of the cottage. In the worst case the public car park is only a 5 minute walk away - although I cannot recall ever having had to use it.

Portloe Cottage

Positives: Attractive cottage, tastefully decorated. Clean and well-equipped. Would recommend this cottage to others, but not for winter breaks. Not so positive: Key not in key safe on arrival. Poor phone signal so had to travel to get one and ask for help. Fortunately, there was another couple holidaying nearby who allowed us to wait there. The mattress was very firm even with our own memory foam mattress topper. It would be helpful to know beforehand if mattresses are firm or soft since this can make or break a holiday. The sofas were well-worn, lumpy and uncomfortable. Being a winter break and very cold, the woodburner was necessary. The small storage heater in lounge not adequate for this time of year. The wood burner worked, and everything needed to light a fire was provided. However, despite having flue minimally open, it roared through wood and coal too fast, making it unsuitable and expensive for long periods of use. It needs attention.

So sorry the previous occupants had not replaced the key but delighted the charming guests in our adjacent property looked after you for 45 minutes until our manager arrived with a replacement. There is no mobile phone signal in this lower part of the village beneath the headland, however, and by coincidence, we have now invested in Unlimited BT Infinity Broadband. The mattress was brand new in November because previous guests had complained the previous one was too soft; the relative firmness of the mattress was about the only question you did not ask our manager in your exhaustive pre-arrival email regarding inventory etc. However, I am pleased that the problem was mitigated to an extent by your own mattress topper - you do travel well prepared! Other guests find the L shaped settee very welcoming. There are powerful night storage heaters in each bedroom and two years ago we installed combination convection/night storage heaters in the lounge and kitchen. The cottage is usually very cosy 24/7; the woodburner is an addition. You neglect to mention our manager returned the following day to check everything was OK, topped up the log basket, and gave you a demonstration of how to use the damper on the stove - simple fingertip adjustment between Tickover and Roaring, and invited you to call her in the case of any further problems. The Woodburner instructions are in the Reference Manual ring binder, and our Welcome note invites guests to call either our manager or ourselves in case of any problems. To quote: "if we don't know about problems we can't get them fixed." Neither we nor our manager received any further contact from you during your stay. A pity this detracted from you stay - this could have been resolved in 30 seconds.

Stay at Beach Hill Cottage

My husband and I stayed at Beach Hill Cottage between Christmas and New Year with our dog. We have a house in the village but had to find somewhere else to stay as my parents friends were staying at the main house. Beach Hill Cottage was the perfect size for us and we did overall enjoy our stay. However, we were absolutely freezing downstairs. The storage heater in the kitchen did not work for the first 4 days for some reason then it just started up again. And we ran out of logs/coal for the fire after the first full day so we went to buy some more very quickly. Without the fire on, it was too cold to sit downstairs really. There was no hot water on out first day which was very frustrating so we spent the week having to boost the immersion. I don't know if the owners have considered it but we would have benefited hugely from having wifi at the property. The decor is very sweet and it's a great location. I would recommend it in the warmer months! And just lastly, after reading the reviews from visitors saying that they were thrilled to see a freshly baked cake when they arrived, we were quite disappointed not to have the same service.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

The cottage has night storage heaters upstairs and we added combination convection/night storage heaters downstairs two years ago. Together these normally keep the cottage at a very comfortable temperature 24/7. I am very sorry there appeared to be an issue with one of the heaters and that there was no hot water on the first day, but after that I am not sure why it was necessary to keep using the immersion heater. All instructions are in the Reference Manual ring binder, and our Welcome note invites guests to call either our manager or ourselves in case of any problems. To quote: "if we don't know about problems we can't get them fixed." We received no call from you and you did not mention any difficulties when our manager called on you early in your stay to make sure everything was OK. Having the woodburner on in the evenings makes the cottage especially cosy and we provide a basket of logs, kindling and fire lighting equipment sufficient to get for guests underway for the first night or two, but after that logs are available at the local petrol station which will be well known to you. We are considering disturbing the tranquillity and succumbing to wifi this year, but the cottage is not currently advertised as being wifi equipped. Finally, the welcome cakes are neither listed not guaranteed as part of your package but we do try to supply these as a bonus to all our guests. Occasionally our baker's young children are ill, or life gets in the way, and on this occasion she was unable to cook as her kitchen was being extended and upgraded. You can contact Becky Lions direct at Olly's Maids - look at her fantastic Facebook page!! I can heartily recommend her lemon drizzle cake and she has also made some wonderfully imaginative birthday and Christmas cakes as special orders for us. I am very glad that despite the minor setbacks you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to seeing you again.

Last minute break away from it all

what a beautiful place to stay, away from everything. The cottage was clean and fresh & my husband loved the blueberry lemon drizzle cake awaiting our arrival. ( Unfortunately I am gluten intolerant so not able to sample the cake for myself.) The wood burner was much needed in the evening as the cottage did get a little cold being winter. We think maybe the burner could do with a little TLC as the rope to the door seal is a little tired & the heat bricks in side broken too so probably not as efficient as it could be. However we loved the cottage & it has everything you need, clearly much thought has gone into making guests holiday perfect. We enjoyed some of the coastal walks right on our door step & was lovely to see the activity of the local fisherman bringing in their catch. We would also recommend a short stroll to the local pub for a lovely meal too.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Thank you for your comments. We too think it is a special place and so have tried to equip and maintain the standards we would expect if we were living there all year round, (For example, the insides of all the sash windows have been repainted this autumn and the mattress on the double bed was replaced in November.) The cottage has night storage heaters in the lounge, kitchen and both the bedrooms and these usually keep the cottage at a very comfortable temperature. We have asked our manager to check their settings. The wood burner adds an extra dimension on chilly nights and it is normally possible to having a roaring fire in no time at all. This has immediate impact downstairs but as the substantial chimney breast warms up this acts like a giant radiator upstairs as well. Your constructive observations are appreciated - our manager will be re-fixing the rope door seal and checking the heat bricks ready for use by our next guests.

Impressive setting

A cosy, attractively furnished cottage just yards from Portloe's slipway and the coast path - a very impressive setting, great for walking, and a short drive away from lots of other beautiful places. The narrow, granite lined lanes to the village were hair raising for us townies, but that's Cornwall. Parking must always be a problem, but building work at the hotel opposite meant we could never park outside - we always used the village car park up the hill. It's a lovely spot, but not for families with small children that want safe space outdoors - no garden and no real beach, and vans etc constantly coming and going to the busy hotel.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Thank you for your kind comments about the cottage and its location. It is generally possible to park right outside the front door, but in the high season sometimes we need to briefly double park until a space becomes free. Had I known about the building work at The Lugger I would have called the Manager and asked him to move someone on; alternatively our guests, so displaced, turn the tables and park in the hotel car park! The cottage has a shallow front terrace with table and chairs and although we have no garden, the grassy banks on The Jacka are no more than 50m away up the footpath. In the high season children of all ages from toddlers upwards roam freely and safely (ours are now 23, 21 & 19 and after 15+ summers have all lived to tell the tale!) up and down the road in front of us down to the safe and sheltered harbour beach, again only 50m away down the slip. Millie our elderly Labrador has also been known to enjoy sunbathing in front of the cottage in the middle of the road, which by this stage only serves us, The Lugger. and the tiny harbour.

Had a great relaxing stay in the charming cottage. The lovely decor & cosiness of the cottage made it a lovely place to stay. The location was great for walking & Portloe is one of our favourite places in Cornwall.

Everything was perfect.

It was perfectly lovely. However, you definitely need a car to stay here as there is no public transport to and from the village and no shop in the village. We should have been able to park right outside the door, but there was always a line of cars already there, which may have had something to do with the building works at the hotel opposite, as it has always been fine previously. However we always managed to park easily on the street twenty yards away. A shower curtain would have been nice as it took us most of the week to learn how to use the shower without swamping the bathroom for subsequent users. All this is being very picky as it was excellent and we had a wonderful time. Thank you so much!

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Although village residents use the regular bus service from the stop by the Chapel (you can see the bus stop from the cottage) as a visitor you will certainly have more flexibility if you have your own transport. Hopefully this latest refurbishment of The Lugger will be completed quickly and parking will get back to normal. We do not have space for a full blown shower with screen or curtain, but we have added a handheld shower mixer to the bath taps (see photographs). Thank you for your kind comments and we hope to see you again soon!

Enjoyable Holiday

Beach Hill Cottage in an excellent location, great walks on the doorstep and good beaches within easy reach, it's also an ideal place to meet and chat to people on the SW Coastal Path, Freddie's mother (you need to stay there to find out who Freddie's mother is) and watch the comings and goings at the Lugger. Disappointing that there was no fuel supplied for the log-burner however we did take our own, the information package refers to a log basket couldn't find it. Parking was never a problem, as mentioned in previous reviews the cupboards in the kitchen did smell fusty, suspect an underlying problem with damp behind the cupboards in the kitchen. The information on the route to the cottage refers to a Jet garage this is now a Texaco garage, also if you intend to eat at The Ship we found you needed to book in advance. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

We put the log basket away for the summer but it will be back in place from 26 September ready for the winter. I will also get the kitchen checked to bottom out the musty smell in the cupboards. It is good to hear The Ship is so popular even relatively late in the season; Friday Quiz Night is a great way to start off a stay in Portloe! I am very glad you enjoyed your stay.

Sweet cottage but very damp.

Unfortunately on arrival we had to clean the kitchen floors when my daughter walked on it bare foot her feet were black with dirt and we had to carry her up to the bathroom so she didn't leave marks on the cream carpet. The rest of the cottage was dusty especially the webs behind the dishwasher left pulled out for all to see. There was lots of webs and dust behind the log burner too. The cottage felt very damp and smelt damp and musty. The location isn't any good for children under 14 in my opinion nor is it suitable for dogs as you are constantly under pressure to ensure their safty. I wouldn't recommend to anyone with a family as I feel this location is only ideal for keen fisherman. We felt it was too expensive for very little in return points below No car parking facilities No shower and with a family whom shower every day that isn't great at all as the boiler takes so long to re heat. No internet and very limited channels on the TV on those rainy days. No local shop for miles Wheely bin was fit to bursting and we were told not to put our bin in the place suggested for collection so we traveled to the nearest refuse centre to get rid of our waste as we couldn't use the bin for the cottage. Stairs was a big issue as I have a 2year old and one little slip and it could have been fatal. We wouldn't stay here again as we have stayed in Cornwall in other locations with all listed above as standard things for the same price, we just wanted to try something different but we left diserpointed.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

I would be extremely surprised if the cottage was damp; the ground floor was stripped bare and comprehensive damp-proofing was installed throughout when we bought it. With night storage heaters/electric heating there is no hint of damp even in the depths of winter, let alone August. Our Manager ensures the cottage is cleaned to a consistently high standard. I am confident the description and photographs on the website portray the cottage 100% accurately so I am very sorry if it was not what you were expecting. Prospective guests may wish to compare your comments with those of other recent visitors.

a wonderful home

All the process from searching, booking, paying, staying was just easy and perfekt. The Cottage is exactly as shown on the picture and offers a great home for a holiday in conwall. Many details, such as the cake for the welcome, the well equipped kitchen, books and games (if you forgott yours at home) etc. Of course it is not all new, and not all visitors may have respectet the interieur as we did, aswell as the wet air made the cupboards a bit smelly, but all in all a wonderful place and we would certainly come again. We can recomend the walk on the Coast and for bathing the Port Holland nearby.

We are very glad your long journey from Frankfurt was such a success. Thank you for your charming comments and for treating the cottage as you treat your own home! Becky Lyons' home made cakes are always very popular and she is happy to cook to order during your stay. Sorry if the weather was a little damp (with the windows open the house will air very quickly) and we hope the sun will be shining when you come back to Portloe. Thank you.

Peace and quite by the sea

This is the second time we have stayed at Beach Cottage. The cottage is in the perfect location for some peace and quiet with excellent food and friendly staff at The Ship just up the hill. Wonderful walks for us and our four legged friend right on the doorstep. The cottage has everything you could need though a parking space would be advantageous. We would visit again without hesitation

Reply from Alastair Hazell

Although there is no Residents' Parking as such in Portloe it is normally possible to park right outside the front door and facing the cottage. On the odd occasion when one of "our"(!) three spaces is not available, visitors to the village normally vacate pretty quickly and normal service can be resumed. Thank you for your comments - we are glad you enjoy Beach Hill Cottage so much and look forward to seeing you again.

Beach Hill Cottage for the over 80s!

The cottage was lovely but it was not really suitable for my husband as he is rather unsteady on his feet. We knew the staircase was steep and agreed he could manage it with the handrail. However, what we did not realise was that there was a step down from our bedroom and then up again to reach the bathroom, and then two steps down into the bathroom. We were concerned that he might trip in the night, and even fall down the stairs, so we kept the bathrom light on all night and fortunately all was OK. I can't remember whether all the steps showed up on the details of the cottage or not.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

I have now spoken to your husband on the phone and he was gracious enough to say that these comments were by way of observation rather than criticism and did not detract from your lovely week in Portloe at Beach Hill Cottage! The stairs and handrail are quite steep but are shown in photograph no. 6 in the listing Gallery. The top stair is almost by way of a small landing with one further step up to both the main bedroom (to the left) and the passageway to the second bedroom and bathroom (to the right). In turn, the wide step from the landing down into the bathroom appears in photograph no.17. Thank you very much for choosing to stay with us and your kind comments.

Great location

The cottage was a lovely, cosy little place to stay. However, It does need some extra attention, a shower curtain, recycling instructions (I had to throw away glass, cardboard and plastic cartons), the dishwasher worked sporadically and the cold tap in the kitchen made the most deafening noise when turned on! On the whole though we had a wonderful time. Thank you.

Reply from Alastair Hazell

As we do not have a shower there is no shower curtain, although the bath is fitted with a modern mixer tap and hand-held shower head as seen in the photographs. Unfortunately recycling in Portloe is only fortnightly and not really geared up to weekly changeovers. Thank you for bringing the dishwasher issue to our attention; this is now fully working. Mains water pressure in the village is, we are told by our plumber, exceptionally high and accounts for the interesting acoustics! We are glad you had a wonderful time and hope to see you again.

Beautiful location

We stayed at the cottage at the end of June. The cottage was very comfortable (but not luxurious). Parking was never a problem. Would go back again.

Beach Hill Cottage

Portloe is a lovely place to access the coastal path. The cottage provides for your basic needs but is due for a makeover. The Lugger Hotel is directly opposite the cottage and parking is an issue with staff arriving for work early and parking in the very few spaces available outside the cottage. The Ship Inn, just up the road , serves reasonable Pub Grub but like most places on the holiday routes in Cornwall is a bit over priced for what you get but is very convenient after a long day out and about. The cottage has no enclosed garden area so nowhere private to sit. This may be an issue to some.

lovely setting ...cute cottage ...just a few niggles

We loved Portloe, and the position of the cottage, but did have a few niggles.... Somewhat concerned that the cottage was not secure given the window bolts on both downstairs sash windows were rusted through, and had obviously been like that for while. Given that there was no outside space a drying rack should have been provided.(One was mentioned in the book, but we couldn't find it??).. It seemed a bit pointless to have a washing machine without a dryer, as not ideal to have damp clothes in such a small space. I think that the rental price of the cottage surely warranted internet connection? Jane Owen
